City names

[edit]

Should we change Kraków to "Krakau (Kraków)" in the phrase: " ...he became the commanding officer of the 12th Artillery Brigade attached to the Kraków-based 12th Infantry Division"?

I am asking because one editor (supported by some others) insists on using Polish names for the non-Polish cities when those cities were part of Poland or just happen to be in Polish related articles, like Wolodarka, Wasylkowce, Lwów, Wilno, etc. I am not changing it yet to avoid being reverted on the spot. Just checking for opinions. --Irpen 01:20, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kraków is a special case (much like Lwów) as there were three official languages of Galicia: Polish, German and Latin, so there's no problem with using the Polish name for the period if we don't want to use the contemporary English name of Cracow (but in fact Cracovia and Krakau would also be acceptable to me). See also my response to the very same question asked by Irpen at Talk:Maładečna and possibly at 100 other places, will add more links as soon as I find other places where he added the same question. //Halibutt 07:26, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
