Notability

[edit]

I posted a notability tag on the article, because I am not seeing how the subject of the article meets guidelines for notability, including WP:GNG and WP:Notability (people), which requires significant number of sources and accomplishments.

Is there more information about this individual that can help establish how their career affected the field of photography?

Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL is a good tool.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a message on my page or leave a message here.–CaroleHenson (talk) 19:41, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ritchie333, You removed the notability tag, and I am returning it because: 1) GNG and Notability (people) don't say that if there's a page in a book about a person, they are probably notable, 2) the text in the article gives zero clue about how they are notable and there are not significant sources, and 3) it would benefit the article to explain why this person deserves a Wikipedia page - per WP:ISNOT.
Let's leave the tag until there is more that explains why this person is notable and with more sources.–CaroleHenson (talk) 19:44, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As mentioned on my talk page, please also see C. B. Waite. By the way, primary sources do not add to notability, they just help with background.–CaroleHenson (talk) 19:50, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted to hold off on the "notability" tag for just a minute until the creator had expanded it a bit more, possibly adding more sources - WP:BITE and all that. I haven't looked, myself. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:03, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We're working together on this... and I am starting a list of items to add. I just didn't want it to get tagged for deletion... now someone will see that it's a work in progress.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:08, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah okay, I just came across it on NPP and thought I'd grab it. I marked it as "patrolled" after adding the extra source. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 20:10, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I got it from the NPP, too, I often leave it up while I'm working on articles so that they "age" a bit. I see she removed the tag, but didn't add any information. Hmmm. I'll let it go right now, but if nothing is added, I'm going to put it back. I am finding some things, still nothing that has established notability, but it's a work-in-progress.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:22, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copying from User talk:CaroleHenson

CaroleHenson, Ok having reviewed the notability guidelines for people specifically for creative people, specifically 4d( is represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums) I am not sure why archives of J.A Palmer 's stereographs in the library of congress (https://www.loc.gov/resource/ppmsca.39587/) , Various collections under the nypl database including the shomburg center(https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/search/indexfilters%5Bdivision%5D=SCG&filters%5BnamePart_mtxt_s%5D%5B%5D=Palmer%2C+J.+A.&keywords=#) and a profile and several stereorgraphs in the collection of the International center of photography (https://www.icp.org/browse/archive/constituents/james-a-palmer?all/all/all/all/0) as well as the sources you have provided ( thanks btw) do not establish his notability. Martha2017bgc (talk) 00:00, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Martha2017bgc, Being in digital collections isn't the same as being in a museum's collection, but I would say that LOC, NYPL, and the International Center of Photography is good... and I think combined with being known for his photographs of African-Americans during the Reconstruction Era... do combine to be sufficiently notable. These facts were not known when I first applied the notability tag, but based upon the research by the two of us, I think that the combined information is sufficient.
I think it would be good to add information about how he contributed to documenting the Reconstruction Era -- and it looks like there's sufficient information to add that, plus perhaps adding some background information about the importance of documenting that period. Is that something that you are interested in working on? Or, I would be happy to add more info from the sources that I found.
As an aside, there are some editing tips that I am going to post on your talk page... it takes awhile to learn all the guidelines regarding formatting, citing, etc. and hopefully the pointers will help.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:45, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
CaroleHenson Funny you should mention his role in documenting the reconstruction Era, my initial topic was about the evolution of the material possessions of african-americans following the civil war which is how i came across his work in the first place (https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/5e66b3e9-264b-d471-e040-e00a180654d7#/?uuid=5e66b3e9-264b-d471-e040-e00a180654d7). I will continue to add information about his work contributing to that particular subject using sources I have as well as the once you provided. Again, I can't thank you enough for your help!!! I look forward to reading your additions/edits.Martha2017bgc (talk) 00:59, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Martha2017bgc, Cool! Do you mind if I work on the citations real quick while you work on what you want to add? It shouldn't take too long. Then, when you're done, I'll look after you're through at any further opportunities for additional info.–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:19, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Martha2017bgc, Done. I wanted to get it pretty clean and tidy to help provide a good example of how text, citations, etc. are formatted. I also reorganized the career information so that it flowed chronologically.
By the way, do the citations cover all the content that is being cite (since the last citation)? I am not seeing it, but perhaps I am missing something. For instance, for the Aikens, SC Winter Resort book, I am not seeing discussion of Palmer's career.–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:47, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
CaroleHenson Yeah, the aiken sc winter resort book citation doesnt make sense. It was referenced in teal's book which is why i think i added it. i will delete it now. I haven't used any of the sources about his contribution to documenting the reconstruction era yet because i want to do more research and have a more solid understanding of his role. More information

[edit]

Here's a working list of more information:

  • A 2015 exhibit, "Many Thousand Gone: Portraits of the African-American Experience", which included Palmer's work which is described as having captured " black southern life during the era of Reconstruction (1865–1877)" (which can be paraphrased for the article) at Middlebury College Museum of Art .
  • Pictorial South Caroliniana, 1998
  • Poems from Sanctuary from Transitions article explains the nature of his work
  • Perhaps something from this... maybe a springboard to search for information that goes into greater detail.
  • Perhaps a summary sentence or two could be captured from: cite template in [edit] — Joseph M. Lee III (October 30, 2000). Augusta and Summerville. Arcadia Publishing. pp. PT160, ... ISBN 978-1-4396-1084-8.

-Let's what I could find. I tried to find an obit, but couldn't find one. Hopefully this will help, and it looks like other sources are being found.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:54, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
