Notability[edit]

I posted a notability tag on the article, because I am not seeing how the subject of the article meets guidelines for notability, including WP:GNG and WP:Notability (people), which requires significant number of sources and accomplishments.

Is there more information about this individual that can help establish how their career affected the field of photography?

Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL is a good tool.

Ritchie333, You removed the notability tag, and I am returning it because: 1) GNG and Notability (people) don't say that if there's a page in a book about a person, they are probably notable, 2) the text in the article gives zero clue about how they are notable and there are not significant sources, and 3) it would benefit the article to explain why this person deserves a Wikipedia page - per WP:ISNOT.

I got it from the NPP, too, I often leave it up while I'm working on articles so that they "age" a bit. I see she removed the tag, but didn't add any information. Hmmm. I'll let it go right now, but if nothing is added, I'm going to put it back. Martha2017bgc, Being in digital collections isn't the same as being in a museum's collection, but I would say that LOC, NYPL, and the International Center of Photography is good... and I think combined with being known for his photographs of African-Americans during the Reconstruction Era... do combine to be sufficiently notable. These facts were not known when I first applied the notability tag, but based upon the research by the two of us, I think that the combined information is sufficient.

I think it would be good to add information about how he contributed to documenting the Reconstruction Era -- and it looks like there's sufficient information to add that, plus perhaps adding some background information about the importance of documenting that period. Is that something that you are interested in working on? Or, I would be happy to add more info from the sources that I found.

As an aside, there are some editing tips that I am going to post on your talk page... it takes awhile to learn all the guidelines regarding formatting, citing, etc. and hopefully the pointers will help.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:45, 2 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

CaroleHenson Funny you should mention his role in documenting the reconstruction Era, my initial topic was about the evolution of the material possessions of african-americans following the civil war which is how i came across his work in the first place (https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/5e66b3e9-264b-d471-e040-e00a180654d7#/?uuid=5e66b3e9-264b-d471-e040-e00a180654d7). I will continue to add information about his work contributing to that particular subject using sources I have as well as the once you provided. Again, I can't thank you enough for your help!!! Martha2017bgc, Done. I wanted to get it pretty clean and tidy to help provide a good example of how text, citations, etc. are formatted. I also reorganized the career information so that it flowed chronologically.

By the way, do the citations cover all the content that is being cite (since the last citation)? I am not seeing it, but perhaps I am missing something. CaroleHenson Yeah, the aiken sc winter resort book citation doesnt make sense. It was referenced in teal's book which is why i think i added it. i will delete it now. I haven't used any of the sources about his contribution to documenting the reconstruction era yet because i want to do more research and have a more solid understanding of his role. A 2015 exhibit, "Many Thousand Gone: Portraits of the African-American Experience", which included Palmer's work which is described as having captured " black southern life during the era of Reconstruction (1865–1877)" (which can be paraphrased for the article) at Middlebury College Museum of Art .
