Untitled

[edit]

I edited the article in that Caroll Shelby had nothing to do with the creation of the Mustang. That was Lee Iococca (sp?). Yes Carroll Shelby Created the Shelby Mustang not the mustang. They have a difference.

Shelby Durango

[edit]

Back in 1999 something like 300 Shelby Durangos were produced. I don't know much about their history or specs, so I don't want to add them under the wrong category. Does anyone know anything about these trucks? TomTheHand 17:33, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at http://www.allpar.com and was unable to find any information on a Shelby Durango. The Durango started production in 1998 while Shelby's association with Chrysler Corporation seems to had ended shortly after Viper production began in 1992. I have found information on the Shelby Rampage and the Shelby Dakota, though. Respectfully, SamBlob 02:13, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shelby and the Viper

[edit]

Chrisler created the Viper as an "indirect descendent" of the cobra. One of his final functions working with Dodge was consulting on the Viper project. I seen a picture of Shelby with all the Shelby Dodge cars in the back and I recall seen The Dodge Viper Concept right behind him. I post it if i can find it again.

Formula One

[edit]

Shelby had a short and undistinguished Formula One career in 1958-1959. Shouldn't this be mentioned here? Philsy 20:37, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if a source for the information can be found and stated. Respectfully, SamBlob 22:38, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Shelby's F1 career is now described in the "Driving career" section. -- DH85868993 13:25, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A matter of opinion

[edit]

"The most memorable of these cars was the Dodge Viper." - Unless this can be traced to some relevant source I'd say it's pruely a matter of opinion. In my world the Viper was an embarrasment when compared to his earlier works and far from "the most memorable" of his creations. Partnership between Carroll and Unique Performance

[edit]

Carroll and Unique Performance were never partners. Unique was merely a licensee of Carroll Shelby Enterprises. The quoted link incorrectly lists Carroll as a partner. This was based on a misleading press release put out by Unique itself. This link (http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/top-2006-Shelby-GT-150-by-Unique-Performance.htm) correctly states the relationship: "The project got going a few years ago when Doug Hasty, president of Unique Performance in Farmers Branch, Texas worked out a licensing agreement with Shelby Automobiles. Of course, Unique builds the Shelby G.T.500E “Continuation” Eleanor fastbacks under Shelby license, as well."

The Shelby Stripes?

[edit]

There is a story about Shelby turning up late for a race direct from his emplyers garage; still dressed in his blue and white two-stripe overalls he jumped straight into the car to get practice time in - hence the famous two-stripe paint job on most shelby cars. This is a great part of his history and explains why Cobras, Mustangs etc have the right to the two white stripes! Please could you include somewhere?

Taken from: http://www.carrollshelby.com/history.html

"August 1953 - Carroll Shelby realizes he'll have to hurry to the track to get in any practice and wears his work clothes-coveralls-from the farm. When his odd racing attire nets him more laughs and publicity than his racing record, Carroll sticks with the striped bib coveralls, which become his trademark. "

Chix —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.165.29.88 (talk) 14:32, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

while this may be a trademark of his, the history of american sports cars being white with two blue stripes goes back before shelby was born. international auto racing in the early 20th century spawned each country's racing team being painted a different color. the USA was given white with blue stripes, england was green, italy was red, etc. Skiendog (talk) 17:13, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't worth mentioning in wikipedia, but a stupid bit from Bill Cosby is? How is that bit relevant to Carroll Shelby's life and legacy? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 159.247.3.230 (talk) 21:52, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Daytona/GT40

[edit]

I was under the impression that Shelby had a fairly significant role in the development of both the Daytona Coupe and GT40, both of which were very successful programs, yet these are barely mentioned. No? If so, it should really be fleshed out a little. Or was his role not as significant as reported elsewhere ([1] for instance)? --Fru1tbat (talk) 15:35, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Years Active

[edit]

Seriously, 1958-1959? How the heck did that get there? Obviously looking at the history it was a few more years than one. Ebrockway (talk) 04:36, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's under the heading "Formula One Championship Career", indicating that he participated in Formula One from 1958-1959. DH85868993 (talk) 11:35, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 15 May 2012

[edit]

Carroll Shelby - section on early driving career: change .."he drove for the Cad-Allard, Aston Martin and Maserati teams" to: "he raced a Chrysler Allard and then for the Aston Martin and Maserati teams" I stood and watched him win an SCCA race at Offutt Field in Omaha in 1953 driving a Chrysler Allard, which was his own & not part of a team. Curtis LeMay allowed races there in '52 & '53, both of which I attended. I was 13 years old and keenly interested in cars - subscribed to Road & Track, Motor Trend and Hot Rod - and was surprised to see an Allard using a Chrysler Hemi, as all the ones I had seen or heard of at that point had been Cadillac powered. Later spent 35 years in product development with Chrysler & Nissan. John Schutz slojohn90@hotmail.com 805-542-0426

Carroll Shelby was not a designer

[edit]

He even admits in this esquire.com interview that he wasn't a designer.

Quoting Shelby from the article:

I don't design cars. I'm not a designer. I know what I desire to be built, I know what the end result is, the horsepower, the competition we'll be working against — but I leave it to the people who work with me to put it all together. I don't do anything.93.91.80.7 (talk) 16:43, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Carroll Hall Shelby's Can-Am Racer

[edit]

In follow up of this request, SCCA National Championship Runoffs mentions that the Runoffs dispayed a prototype Shelby Can Am race car at Road Atlanta in October 1989. The source did not mention anything about Bruns or Brock. This November 1989 source mentions that Shelby had a "contract with the SCCA to build 200 of the new spec-class Shelby Can-Am sports racers for the 1990 season." Please revise the article if needed. -- Jreferee (talk) 02:50, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cynthia Shelby?

[edit]

@Surajvedula: (only recent substantial contributor who isn't blocked) Can someone look at the recent additions from Cynthia Shelby who claims to be a former wife of Carroll? I can't find any source that backs this up. - Alexis Jazz 18:53, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of younger Shelby?

[edit]

Since he's been dead for several years now, shouldn't his photo be of him when he was designing cars for Ford? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:648:8302:52E0:1879:7914:4910:C4B4 (talk) 16:56, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]

The lead paragraph currently says: "Shelby is best known for his involvement with the AC Cobra and Mustang". It depends who you ask. He's certainly known for the Cobra, and Ford put his name on a limited-run Mustang produced with his advice (the Shelby American GT 350 model of 1965-6, most of which were sold to Hertz for rental and thrashed to death by the customers in fairly short order), but he also won Le Mans in 1959 as co-driver of the Aston Martin DBR1 with Roy Salvadori, which is quite a distinction, and he oversaw the development of the big-engine Ford GT 40 Mark II which won Le Mans in 1966. The successful release of the film Ford vs Ferrari (Le Mans '66 in European territories), in which Shelby is played by Matt Damon who looks nothing like him, may mean that this becomes Shelby's best-known achievement as far as popular culture is concerned, even though the Mark II was a dead end and the smaller-engined Mark I went on to win Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. Military Service

Military Service in the US Army Air Corps should be listed with a header at the top like other prominent people. Service, Rank, Country of Allegiance... Super Spook Actual (talk) 05:15, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

World War II service

[edit]

Although Shelby served as a pilot in the Army Air Forces during the World War II era, there are no reliable sources found as of yet state that he was in a war zone during the war. More specifically, the sources do not establish defining role in World War II. Accordingly, "Category:United States army air forces pilots of World War II" was changed to "Category:United States Army Air Forces pilots" until a defining role is established as a World War II pilot. Most sources I've read have had him down as a flight instructor. Mr Larrington (talk) 19:19, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
