Olympic cycling categorization
Regarding BMX racing and other cycling events: only 3 types of cycling are currently in the Olympics: BMX racing, Track cycling and Road bicycle racing. Category:Cycle racing contains mostly sports that are not in the Olympics. We could create a new category for current or former Olympic cycling sports, which would work fine. Otherwise, each of the 3 current cycling sports has to go in Category:Summer Olympic sports. Or Category:Sports at the Summer Olympics? But at the moment there exists no category of all cycling events at the that are/were at the Olympics.
Note that BMX includes racing, Freestyle BMX and Dirt jumping so you have to categorize the BMX sub-discipline, not all BMX. Only one of the three is a form of racing; the other two are sports but not racing. And only racing was in the Olympics. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:29, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- I have created a normal structure for Category:Olympic sports. You reverted some my edits. Please, note, only one row for Cycling is in the 2016 Summer Olympics#Calendar (as for equestrian, gymnastics and wrestling). Only one entry is in {{Olympic sports}}. By your logic we must include Shot put and Long jump into this category and exclude Athletics (sport) because some athletics events are non-Olympics. It's a wrong, this is category for "umbrella sports". Also categories with disciplines already included. Totally we must remove BMX racing etc. from parent category Category:Olympic sports because Category:Cycle racing already in it. I think we will create Category:Olympic disciplines in future and will put that articles into it. (Summer Olympic Games include 26 sports with 39 disciplines.) Please revert your edits. - It doesn't make sense to me to be browsing Category:Olympic sports, and to see Category:Cycle racing, to click on it, and then see a list of 12 categories and 20 articles, only 3 of which are connected to the Olympics. Greg LeMond anti-doping stance and controversies has nothing to do with the Olympics. The European Cycle Messenger Championships are not an Olympics sport. I don't see how this helps a reader to see a category which contains so many things not at all members of the parent category.
I've asked members of the Cycling WikiProject to give their opinions. We should also ask the Olympics Project for help. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:42, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Global question. I think globally about all sports. How do you think, do we must to exclude all sports' categories from Category:Summer Olympic sports? (per your text "contains... sports that are not in the Olympics"). We can leave only articles (cycling, gymnastics, etc.) in it and one subcategory Category:Summer Olympic disciplines with disciplines (BMX, road bycycle racing, rhytmic gymnastics) in it. Is it a good solution? NickSt (talk) 21:52, 23 June 2014 (UTC) P.S. Official IOC site say: SPORTS AND DISCIPLINES. NickSt (talk) 22:12, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I think that fixes the problem. Thanks! --Dennis Bratland (talk) 00:22, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Equestrian
Same problem with Equestrian, we have dozens upon dozens of equestrian sports, only three of which are Olympic disciplines and need to be listed as such in their respective articles. To do otherwise would be about as ridiculous as the cycling example above. There's got to be a better way to make the Olympic sports category non-diffusing than to put in ridiculous and non-intuitive categorization. Montanabw(talk) 23:01, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. I have created subcat Category:Summer Olympic disciplines as next step of categorization and put such articles in it. I think it's a best solution of problem. NickSt (talk) 23:34, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
- Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. It solves the problem in the articles. Montanabw(talk) 03:18, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
