Character Description

Serizawa is a brilliant scientist who faces a moral dilemma caused by his potentially-destructive invention, the Oxygen Destroyer. He is arranged to marry Emiko, but knows of her love for Ogata. He shows Emiko his invention and coerces her to promise not to tell anyone about the device.

After Godzilla attacks Tokyo, Emiko betrays Serizawa's secret to Ogata. She and Ogata visit Serizawa's laboratory in an attempt to convince Serizawa to use the Oxygen Destroyer on Godzilla. When they arrive, Serizawa fights Ogata and injures his head. After this, an apologetic Serizawa agrees to talk.

Serizawa says that he wishes to keep the Oxygen Destroyer a secret until he can find a way for it to benefit humanity. The doctor states that even if he burns his notes, the secret would still be in his head, and he does not wish for his invention to be used as the next doomsday weapon. On television, a program is broadcast showing the destruction left behind by Godzilla. Torn by what he has seen, Serizawa burns his research, which prompts Emiko to cry.

Later, aboard a ship tracking Godzilla, Ogata and Serizawa don diving suits and dive to the sea floor in search of Godzilla. Upon spotting the monster, Serizawa activates the Oxygen Destroyer and prompts the crew on the ship to pull Ogata out of the water. Serizawa, now alone with the beast, tells Ogata to live happily with Emiko, then he cuts his cord and dies along with the monster.

In Godzilla vs. Destroyah, pictures of both Ogata and Serizawa can be seen in the home of the elderly Emiko.
