WWE Films is a subsidiary of World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., created in 2002 to create and develop feature film properties for the professional wrestlers within the company.
To date it has co-produced two films and is currently producing three more independently, with The Marine being the first developed solely by the company to reach the filming stage, and the first one to be theatrically released was See No Evil. The president of WWE Films is Joel Simon who recently expressed interest in filming a sequel to The Marine, the idea has yet to get a green light.
Stone Cold Steve Austin has agreed to star in three WWE Films productions, the first one being The Condemned.
Due to the low box office sales of The Condemned and the fact that The Marine made a profit more in the rental market than in theaters, WWE Films plans to release their next films as direct-to-DVD in the future.[citation needed]
Before the formation of WWE Films the WWE produced the 1989 film No Holds Barred featuring Hulk Hogan.
Lionsgate and WWE
During the WWE annual stockholders meeting, Vince McMahon commented on his dislike of Lionsgate's marketing towards the WWE film "The Condemned" . He believes Lionsgate did not properly market the film and used it as a reason for the films minimal success.
