Map of departments of Mauritania, particularly Amourj

Hello there,

I found your name from a map created for the Hodh Ech Chargui region of Mauritania. I am currently beginning a stub project for all the departments of Mauritania. Could you make a map I can use for the Amourj department to begin with, probably more forthcoming?--Thomas.macmillan 00:02, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maps for Congo-Kinshasa

Hi Rarelibra,
I saw the maps you made for Congo-Brazzaville. What level of subdivision do you have for the DRC? --moyogo 14:51, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moyogo - I only have province-level boundary data (or 1st level administrative) for DRC. I am always looking and expanding my dataset, so if I run across more I will let you know! :) Rarelibra 14:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed [this web site] - if these are the 2nd level administrative zones, let me know and I will work on getting them digital. Rarelibra 14:58, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Congosite map is actually the current 3rd level (territoire) or seems to be. Unfortunately the cities are spotted so their contours is invisible.
I'm no sure whether the current 2nd level (district) will still exists in the new orgonisation of the country, since all the new provinces are pretty much the districts themselves, except for Bas-Congo which stays a single province and two districts of the Katanga which become one province together. Every other district becomes a province. In any case, let met know if you have a digitized form (vector or raster) of the current 3rd level.
[1] has the current 1st and 2nd level. There is also a 4th level, but I don't think it's anywhere out there. Cheers. --moyogo 15:20, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, [2], [3], [4] seem to have the current level 3. --moyogo 15:32, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, that was fast. Nice work too! It seems only the borders of the cities are missing. Matadi, Bandundu, Mbandaka, Kisangani, Goma, Kananga, should probably have borders of their own. The map [5] (also in TIFF and JPG) has borders for those cities.--moyogo 20:25, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics Lab

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 02:07, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maps for Israel

Hello! I was wondering if it would be possible to ask for you assistance in creating some maps for the state of Israel. Besides some basic maps highlighting the different districts, the are no useful maps that could be inserted into geographical articles. Thank you very much! Help needed

Dear Rarelibra, If you share some time, your help needed for geography of Turkey. I am trying to organize rivers, mountains. I create a Template:Infobox River TR, and trying to find river articles (many of them created by Greek users with Greek names and not include any "Turk",Turkey, words)to add this template to fill info and to add map. 1-Can you help to prepare locator maps for mounts and rivers.? 2-Can you find coord info for these (source and mouth coord. for rivers, and coord. for peaks of mounts) Please take a look here . Regards MustTC 22:03, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I good deal. Thanks. Then may we use this db for other geographic locations; like villages, ancient sites, etc.?
If I didnt misunderstand; now we need clear lists of articles (topic by topic).
Ok.will be done asap.

Regards MustTC 22:51, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rarelibra! I am sorry to tell you, you made some little mistakes in this article and on the map. As you can see in this [Municipalities of East Timor official document of East Timor], the lower entity after districts in ET are subdistricts and finally sucos with the different towns, villages and hemlets. Anyhow, there are only 65 subdistricts, not 71. Please check for differences the maps of each district on Commons commons:category:Maps of East Timor. I am not sure, if your map has just old informations of pre2003 or there is another reason. Greetings, J. Patrick Fischer 13:28, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the update/correction on East Timor. Sometimes the information I get (in this case, from Statoids) is old and outdated - and the good thing about Wiki is how fast we can learn about updated information.
I did a few formatting changes to the subdistricts page - and the map I made I will relabel to Subdistricts (instead of Municipalities). Might I suggest this - add an article that talks about the definition and applicable usage of suco? Because village is the English term. If we have an entry for the subnational entity of suco, then the article can remain more cultural. :) Oh, and if you have any reference to maps of the Municipalities, I would gladly work on creating some. Rarelibra 14:46, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Subdistricts of East Timor

The article about the subdistricts looks nice now, but your maps has still some subdistricts too many. ;-) I uploaded my own work (sources mentioned there). Compare especially Baucau and Oecussi-Ambeno. Its a pity, I couldn't find until now a map with the sucos.

I couldn't find a definition, what is a suco exactly. A suco has a chefe do suco and a suco council, elected last time 2003/2004. Dili is splitted into several subdistricts and sucos, most subdistricts has no suco with the name of the subdistrict's capital... . I only know, there are 443 Sucos with 2.336 towns, villages and hamlets... . Maybe you are more successful for searching the definition. Maybe we should add the suco-list from German/Dutch Wikipedia. Merry christmas! J. Patrick Fischer 22:22, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rarelibra! I found this map with the borders of the sucos of East Timor! Not easy to reproduce and no orientation for the suco names, but a first step. Hope, it could help you. Tell me, if you were successful producing a suco map. Happy new year! J. Patrick Fischer 21:52, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Afghan maps

Hi Rarelibra. Personally, I do not know which colors to pick. I'll leave that to you :) It'll probably good too choose the same colors (with small variation) for the same ethno-linguistic groups. For example Greenish colors for Persian-speakers (Tajiks/Persians, Hazaras, Chahr Aimaq), purple for Pashtuns, and yellowish colors for the Turkic-speakers (Turkmen and Uzbeks). What do you think? Tājik 11:29, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tajik - I received the note on my talk page about the need for the language maps for Afghanistan. I will take a look at the maps you provided links to, and definitely create some "wiki originals" for your free use. Give me a few days, and I will let you know when I am done! :) Rarelibra 14:44, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Hey Tajik. I'm guessing you sent these two [6] [7] maps to Rarelibra. Just curious, is he going to use the same colors as those maps? I'd prefer some slightly different colours. For example for Tajiks and Persian I think green is a good colour. Actually, thats the only preference I have. Maybe somethink like this [8] [9] in terms of colors. I think you know which colors to chose. So if you can please tell him/her my request or just overall what colors you would like since you know best. Great work, I am very much looking forward to this. Thanks. Behnam 17:28, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Benham - before I finalize the maps, let me know any specific color requests. The outlines are done, so let me know and I will create and post on Commons. Good news is, your maps will be the first I create in SVG format. Rarelibra 19:44, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Map request: political map of Africa

Hello. I recently noticed some of the maps you had created for Districts of Zimbabwe and was most impressed. After also noticing that you are a member of WikiProject Africa and that you take map creation/editing requests, I have decided to come to you for assistance: could you modify either Image:BlankMap-Africa.png or Image:Blank Map-Africa.svg to add Cape Verde, the Comoros, and the Canary Islands.

There may be other minor issues with the map(s), but the omission of those three relatively large island groups stands out. I want to create a map of Africa for the article Afrobarometer, but do not want to do so with an incomplete map (especially since Cape Verde is one of the countries I would need to highlight). Please let me know if you will be able to do it. Thank you, Black Falcon (Talk) 19:46, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the case you have somr time to throw away

(Edit conflict) Hi Rarelibra, I've noted that you're really good with maps, and that maybe, if you haven't anything more interesting to work on at the moment, you could spare me some of your time. I've noted you've done second-level administrative divisions of Niger (Arrondissements of Niger). Could you try to do a similar work for the bordering country with Departments of Chad? While Golbez was so nice to provide me with the first-level division (Regions of Chad), I unfortunately miss the maps of the country's departments. Obviously, if you don't feel like doing it for any reason, no problem, anyway the articles won't rot anyway ;-) (I no nobody will believe this, but actually it's a pure coincidence Black Falcon posted a similar request in exactly the same moment). Ciao, --Aldux 19:58, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if it could be possible. You once made this map of the departments of Chad [10]; its problem is that there aren't any names of the various departments, so if a department is nominated in an article it can't be identified in the map. For this I think that a solution like the one you adopted for the arrondissements of Niger, with the names of the districts given, maps like this one I mean [11]. Thanks for anything you can do. Again, ciao--Aldux 20:34, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Algeria maps

Hi Rarelibra! First, I'm just impressed by all those maps you made, I'm personally also very interested in geography :-) I want to know if you can help me on a task I have for the political subdivisions of Algeria. I currently made a map for the provinces of Algeria, which I'm going to upload, and one for a city locator to remplate the one I already made. I have maps from another source contaning maps of second- and third-level administrative divisions, which I tried to modifiy to use here on Wikipedia but where I failed (Let's say, I'm not good at "graphical design"). I would appreciate if you got some spare time for me, or if you could help me on these maps. Greetings. --escondites 16:32, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maps of districts of Vietnam

Hi, I see that you made this map of Vietnamese districts. In the Vietnamese Wikipedia project we currently have several hundred articles for individual districts of Vietnam but none of them have maps indicating their positions. It would be great if you would create the map for each district, highlighting them in the map of the province it's in. You can use this mapping database for the most up-to-date info (just choose a province and click on "Xem bản đồ" to see its districts mapped). Thank you very much! Bolivia cantons

Glad you are starting this. I was going to start them but if you can get the list complete I'll help stub them . You are a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject South America/Bolivia work group right? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 17:35, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am now. :) I was doing the admin levels for my database, and came across THIS website that, as you click down into the municipalities, appears to show the canton boundaries. It will take a bit of time, but I will be able to decipher this and provide info and a map (or maps). Rarelibra (talk) 17:38, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've just added Municipalities of Bolivia but cantons will take a bit longer. I noticed not even some provinces are started. Bolvivia is one of the countries on my hot list of improving coverage. Best place to start is geogrpahically ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 18:03, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Next stage will be to red link the municipios create some templates by department and get them started. I'd imagine its probably best to combine municipalities with the city articles until they develop. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 18:04, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the list looks better condensed. Now there are huge spaces and the page is longer than necessary. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 18:19, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't matter though. That would be great if you can create maps. I'll set about creating the templates and starting them ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ Talk? 18:20, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It will look more complete after I do the maps by Province to show the municipalities in color. Rarelibra (talk) 18:55, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there. Two years ago, I started writing articles about Bolivia's provinces, municipios and cantones on the German Wikipedia, and a few on the English Wikipedia as well. Chilean islands east and south of Tierra del Fuego

Hello, Rarelibra. At your map of Chilean administrative divisions was lost a number of Chilean islands:

These islands are extremely southern in all Americas (Diego Ramírez Islands are not at your map also, these Chilean islands are 100 km SW from Cape Horn). It is not any personal pointing, I hope. If you will add listed topics to your map it would be a map of all Chilean territory, my collegue. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 17:31, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming bodies of water

I noticed your efforts in renaming the titles of articles of bodies of water to "lake", also on this list: List of lakes. I would like to point out that you missed quite a few, namely the lakes in Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. --VanBurenen (talk) 10:16, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The translation of the dutch names is crap by the way. "Naardermeer" means lake near the town of Naarden, so "Lake Naarder" is nonsense. "Lake Naarden" would be better of course, but I would suggest: leave the translation, especially if you don't know how to translate... 85.146.180.205 (talk) 15:49, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In order to keep texts together I copied this here (VanBurenen (talk) 17:43, 24 February 2008 (UTC)):[reply]
Elsewhere you pointed to this: Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Use_English_words. I would like to point you to the last paragraph here: Wikipedia:Proper_names#Place_names:
As features on the landscape get smaller, the existence of English equivalents to local language names becomes less likely. It is sometimes customary, as with personal names, to transliterate these place names so that they are better understood by an English speaker. This is a practice that is losing favor to preserving local spelling to the extent possible.
My comment on the sentence I underlined: good, common sense prevails. Furthermore, I also wrote the following comment today: [16].
Your explanation above with regard to the Scottish, Irish, Welsh: you don't seem to appreciate that the English-language wikipedia crosses all language borders. People not as well educated as yourself and living elsewhere in the world do not see these as "English language" words. Alas, you made it many times more difficult to use Wikipedia. I would consider wikipedia educationally improving when you make it going the other way: use redirects to guide people that type a name in English to the local name. As, by the way, it is done in many other language versions of wikipedia, looking at the interwiki listings. Comparable to using the official name for trees and plants for example, take the hazelnut. I strongly disagree with your actions. Therefore I can and will not participate. --VanBurenen (talk) 17:40, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(PS: I noticed that on Talk:Lake Veluwe similar objections were brought forward. --VanBurenen (talk) 17:48, 24 February 2008 (UTC))[reply]

VanBurenen - I have no idea why the hazelnut article goes to its scientific name. However, it suggests the downfall of wiki. You remember when wiki first started? People laughed at the notion of a living encyclopedia. Then it turns out a lot of the articles are quite accurate and factual based on experts and interest. Then you run into examples like hazelnut. What a shame. But there is absolutely no corrolation between that and this article. The lake is known as "Lake Veluwe" in English - by Encyclopedia Brittanica (not a 'scientific' reference - by far, used by "regular people"), also by Rand McNally and a host of other organizations and common references. In essence, if you ask someone the name of a lake in Switzerland or France or Netherlands, they will look at an English reference (Atlas, Encyclopedia, search online) and find the English reference - in this case, Lake Veluwe. It is quite simple, actually. But this downfall shows how the push for such as you and others suggest then portrays against guidelines. If it comes down to that - then my other suggestion stands firm as well. If it changes to the native translation in English wiki, then it changes to English in the other wikis (like Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Superior, etc)... the slope is slippery, and the rabbit hole is deep. You see? Rarelibra (talk) 19:54, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will add to it this challenge - the fact that I do work with maps and that I have travelled to many countries means that I am, in fact, not in the norm. Because I can look at "Lago de" and "Lago di" and "See" and "Meer" and "Lac du" and know what it means is not with the average English speaking person. Hence, someone (like my wife) who learns English is NOT going to look in English wiki for "Lac", "Lago", "See" or "Meer" - she is going to look for LAKE and find her scratching her head in misunderstanding if it goes to the article in the native tongue (just like I was scratching my head in awe as to why hazelnut lead me to a rather scientific heavy article). I guess that is the nature of wiki... to continue such. But not being normal, I can adjust knowing where and how to look - the average user will have trouble with such deviations. Rarelibra (talk) 19:57, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I checked the National Geographic Atlas of the World. It says 'Veluwemeer'. But that is only one of the many articles that you have changed. I am not interested in your scare tactics (i.e "downfall of wiki"). You accuse me of a push "against guidelines". At the same time you ignore the underlined quote from guidelines (above). You don't seem to be able to judge individual cases on their own merit. For me, working on articles is not a case of trade offs or challenges. Good luck to your wife. Bye. --VanBurenen (talk) 13:34, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be so kind to leave the arguments of others on your page? It's clear you don't agree on it, but deleting it all is very rude! 85.146.180.205 (talk) 20:06, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
