"Lollipop" is the first single from Lil Wayne's sixth studio album, Tha Carter III.[1] The track features the late R&B artist Static Major and is produced by Deezle and Jim Jonsin. The track also features extra production by BMP Beatz. www.bmpbeatz.com [1] The song was released digitally on March 13 2008.


Background

Lil Wayne said, "I'm not a lollipop rapper, but this track is cold."[2] The song also features the T-Pain/Roger Troutman vocoder singing effect which Lil Wayne has been experimenting with on various released tracks.[2] Blender described the track as "chopped up and layered over itself in a dense, alien collage. It actually de-naturalizes the vocoder gimmick, which is as common as high-hats nowadays".[2] Lil Wayne also stated, "Dudes are gonna hate this one... Ugly dudes, that is."[2]

"Lollipop" jumped 76 spots from number 85 to 9 on the March 28 2008 issue of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lil Wayne's second top ten hit on the chart as a lead artist. The following week it reached a new peak of #7 on the Hot 100, making it his highest charting single as a lead artist, his previous highest chart position was with "Tha Block Is Hot", which peaked at number 8 in 1999.

It was also revealed on March 27 that "Lollipop" was the #1 song on iTunes Hip-Hop Chart and #4 overall. Over a week after the release, Wayne's Myspace page received a million views and he rose to the #1 position on the Top Artist profile on the website. The week after the release, Wayne earned the biggest add week that a hip-hop artist received at Rhythm Crossover and the biggest for any artist at Urban Radio, including Beyonce and Mariah Carey. The song became the #1 most added and greatest gainer at both radio formats with a total of 138 adds.[3]

Music video

The music video was directed by Gil Green in Las Vegas.[4][5] The video premiered via BET's Access Granted on March 12 2008. The song in the video features an electric guitar on the background of the chorus, whereas the original version does not. The video also was featured on MTV's TRL on March 17 2008. The video features the Maloof brothers playing poker. It also features various forms of eye candy. The Maloofs, among many things, are the owners of the NBA's Sacramento Kings. The video was filmed at the Maloof's multi-million dollar mansion in the Southern Highlands Golf Club, as well as many resorts in Las Vegas, NV. Cameos include Birdman, Brisco, Mack 10, Deelishis and Glasses Malone.

Lyrics

In the song, Lil Wayne samples the song Call Me by R&B group Pretty Ricky. In the song he repeats the lyrics call me and I can make it juicy for you. In Pretty Ricky's song it states call me if you need some lovin' tonight//call me you ain't gotta dial the number twice.

Remixes

One remix features Gorilla Zoe, and the official remix features Gabriel Antonio, Da Puppet Master.
