The Buggy Pirates (バギー海賊団, Bagī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Captain Buggy the Clown. Their captain Buggy the Clown is a former crewmate of Red-Haired Shanks and has met Whitebeard. He and his crew are currently in the Grand Line seeking revenge against Luffy.
Early One Piece
Oda's plans for Buggy's crew were for an animal tamer and a strange swordsman to be part of the crew. When they were first designed, none of the members of Buggy's crew had names. There was also another unnamed member of Buggy's crew who was dropped in later versions. Buggy himself was originally called 'Boogie'.
In another rethink of their design, Zoro was added as a bodyguard of Buggy, but that was scrapped. In this version there was also a Carrier pigeon planned called Hachi who was an Opo bird and he came from the Grand Line. Hachi was later scrapped from the final version of the crew. At this point in the design, Buggy remained unchanged.
One Piece Color Walk 01 also depicts Eichiro Oda's concept designs for other possible crewmembers, who didn't make the cut, so to speak. These include a fat, checkerboard-skinned man, apparently named "Big Top", and a mime-like character, apparently named "Pantomime".
Pirate Flag
Buggy's flag is a standard Jolly Roger with two black slashes on the eyes from the top to bottom and to the left and right, as well as a large red clown nose similar to Buggy's.
Part in the Story
The Buggy Pirates are first seen wrecking a small town only to be defeated by Luffy and his crew. While Nami tied up Buggy's main body, Luffy sent his head, hands, and feet flying all the way to another island. Through a series of adventures, Buggy manages to recruit a transformed Alvida to his cause, regroups with his crew, and recombines with the rest of his body. They follow the Straw Hats to Loguetown, where Buggy manages to trap Luffy onto the execution platform, but before he can lop off his head, a bolt of lightning strikes his swords, destroying the platform and letting Luffy escape. After this event, the Buggy Pirates follow the Straw Hats into the Grand Line, but they are taking a different path than them.
They were last seen leaving Skull island. Upon leaving they meet up with Portgas D. Ace, who decides to help them look for Luffy, apparently unaware of Buggy's goal. Buggy is also unaware of Ace being Luffy's brother. It's clear that Ace had later left The Buggy Pirates to continue his search for Blackbeard. Buggy's plan at the time was to take advantage of Luffy's raised bounty by defeating him and becoming even more notorious.
Crew Information
Buggy the Clown
Captain (15,000,000 beli bounty)
- Seiyuu: Shigeru Chiba
- Voice Actor (4Kids Entertainment): David Wills
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): Mike McFarland
Buggy (バギー, Bagī) accidentally consumed the Bara Bara no Mi, (Chop Chop fruit) a Devil Fruit (Cursed Fruit in the Edited English anime), which allows him to separate his body parts and control them independent of each other, but robbed him of the ability to swim. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to attacks from knives or swords; any such attack just separates him into his component parts.
In addition, most of his body is capable of flying through the air, fast enough to propel a man through a wall - with the crucial exception of his feet. However, even though the parts are separate, Buggy can still feel what the part feels (for example, when Luffy attacked Buggy, he separated his torso from his waist, only to find that Luffy was aiming for the crotch. Needless to say this left him with a rather painful result. Also when Buggy launched his hand out to pin down Zoro for Cabaji's Sting of the Unicycle Technique, Luffy stomped on it, inflicting tremendous pain). He also seems to require either a fixed distance from his detachments, or keep them within his line of vision, in order to manipulate them separately.
Besides his Devil fruit abilities he usually fights with three knives between his fingers. During the flashbacks of his youth he already used these three knives. He also has a blade hidden in his shoe and in Logue Town (Rogue Town in the dub) used a sword in his failed attempt to execute Luffy.
Mohji and Richie
First Mate
- Seiyuu: Shigenori Sōya
- Voice Actor (4Kids Entertainment):
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): Chuck Huber
Mohji (モージ, Mōji) is the first mate of Buggy's Crew. Quite pompous and at times silly, Mohji has the ability to control any animal he wishes, or so he says. He has yet to prove it in the series outside of his pet, a lion named Richie (リチー, Richī), who is more like another crew member than just a pet. Mohji usually opts to use him in battle rather than fight himself. He is, however, fast and agile, and very skilled with a whip. He is also responsible for burning things, such as the pet-food shop and the Going Merry.
In his first appearance, Mohji was sent by Buggy to capture Roronoa Zoro. However, Monkey D. Luffy got in his way, who eventually defeated Mohji after he burned down a pet-food shop that belonged to a recently deceased man and his still-living dog.
After Buggy's defeat Mohji and Cabaji fought over leadership of the group. They were equally matched, and fought for several hours. The battle ended when a sleep-walking Richie knocked them both unconscious, taking over leadership himself. However, Richie and the pirates were kidnapped by a cannibalistic group, but saved by Buggy, Alvida, Mohji, and Cabaji.
Mohji later participated in the attack on Loguetown. It was his job to burn down the Straw-Hat's boat, which he failed to do as soon as it started to rain.[1] Nami and Usopp found him and Richie, but as soon as Mohji sent Richie to attack, Usopp used an egg to distract the lion. The Marines showed up, and started shooting at everyone. Mohji was able to dodge the bullets and flee the scene with the rest of Buggy's group.
Much later, Mohji reappeared with the group as they travel in the Grand Line and find a mysterious man named Portgas D. Ace. He was also in the TV Special that featured the One Piece characters as ninjas, and appeared in several video games. Every time Mohji appears in the series for an arc, his hairstyle changes. During the Buggy arc, his hair was shaped like a teddy bear; the Loguetown arc had him wearing a pink helmet with bunny ears sticking out; and when the group makes it into the Grand Line, his hair is shaped like a lion's mane.
Cabaji
Second Mate
- Seiyuu: Moriya Endō
- Voice Actor (4Kids Entertainment): Sean Schemmell
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): Greg Ayres
Cabaji (カバジ, Kabaji) is the second mate in Buggy's crew as well as their primary swordsman who combines it with acrobatics (mostly on a unicycle) to fight his enemies. He fights with Roronoa Zoro no sooner than after being introduced and plays dirty by kicking Zoro's wounds whenever he has the chance. But once Cabaji is knocked off his unicycle, he is easily defeated by Zoro's 'Oni Giri' which cuts open his chest.
After Buggy's crew was defeated by Luffy, he fought with the 'other' first mate Mohji for the title for the next captain--both were knocked out by a sleepwalking Richie, who gained the title (though lost it just as quick). However, he returned to his former position when Buggy resurfaced.
During the Loguetown attack, Cabaji accompanied Buggy and Alvida to fight against the Straw Hats and Navy.[2] Despite wanting to have a rematch with Zoro, he does not get a chance to do so.
Traveling Companions
Alvida
Travelling Companion (5,000,000 beli bounty)
- Seiyuu: Yōko Matsuoka
- Voice Actor (4Kids Entertainment): Caren Manuel
- Voice Actor (FUNimation): Laurie Steele
Alvida (アルビダ Arubida) was the obese female captain of the Alvida Pirates Crew. Named after a real-life pirate like many others in the series [3]. According to One Piece: Pirates Carnival, her last name is "Queen", but this was never mentioned in the manga or the anime. Despite her girth and poor complexion, she fancied herself the most beautiful woman in all Four Seas; those who disagreed would be bludgeoned with her iron club. In the 4kids dub she is given a scratchy voice with a heavy "Western" accent (4Kids is well known to give stereotypical accents based on the appearance of characters); in the FUNimation version, it is much more neutral. When Koby mistakenly boarded her ship, she intimidated him into becoming her cabin boy.[4] She dislikes filth and laziness and often forced her crew to clean the ship from stem to stern.
After losing to Monkey D. Luffy, she joins Buggy the Clown and returns with the power of the Sube Sube no Mi (スベスベの実; Slip Slip Fruit), which makes most attacks that are meant for the user to slip off, making herself the first character that has eaten a Devil Fruit after encountering the Straw Hat Pirates.[5] Eating the Sube Sube no Mi made Alvida slim, attractive, and immune to most physical attacks, as they literally "slip" off her. Due to the beauty gained from eating the fruit, Alvida has been able to use seduction to get her way, as evidenced when she was nearly arrested in Loguetown. Though less stout, she still wields her iron club as effortlessly as before.
As most villains, Alvida has a bounty on her head. Her 5,000,000 Beli bounty has been in effect prior to her eating a Devil Fruit and her encounter with the marines in Lougetown, so it is currently unknown if it has been increased since then. Her name is spelled "Aluvida" on her bounty poster (however, u syllables are often silent in the Japanese language).
Since Luffy was the first and only man to have beaten her, she has become infatuated with him.[6] In order to test his worth, she helped Buggy attempt to execute him in Loguetown. When the execution is foiled, Alvida becomes determined to make Luffy her man. Since Loguetown, she seems to have abandoned her own crew and even her own ship for Buggy's Band of Pirates. People used to say she was the most beautiful woman in the world to avoid being hit by her club; these days they really mean it.
Crew Strength
The crew, being one of the first to appear, is initially one of the weaker crews in the One Piece world. They were defeated by the Straw Hats pirates in their early days when only Luffy, Nami and Zoro were members and later were defeated in Loguetown by the Straw Hats and the Marines. It is possible, however, that they have grown in strength since then. One hint of this is that in Loguetown, Cabaji unveils a new technique to take out several of the Marines. Although most average pirate crews simply cannot survive on the Grand Line, they seem to be perfectly capable of operating on it. The fact that their crew currently consists of not one, but two Devil Fruit users, Buggy and Alvida, with the former of the two not only having the experience of sailing on the Grand Line once before but also being a trainee on board of Gold Roger's crew, puts Buggy's Band of Pirates on par with most other Grand Line crews.
