Eren Derdiyok (born June 12, 1988) is a Swiss football player of Kurdish origin who were born in Turkey [1] [2] who currently plays as striker in the Swiss Super League for FC Basel.
Club career
At 6' 2" Derdiyok is a powerful striker who can also fill in a centre-back if needed. He started his career with Swiss minnows BSC Old Boys at the beginning of the 2005/06 season in which scored 10 goals in just 18 appearances. FC Basel noticed his goal scoring instinct and snapped him up in 2006 at the age of 18. In the 2006/07 season, Derdiyok was used mainly as a substitute, playing only one full game, and averaging a total of 220 play minutes that season. For Derdiyok, the 2007/08 season proved to be a lot more profitable and he received regular playing time. In FC Basel's main squad, Derdiyok scored his first hat trick playing away against FC Thun on 2 March, 2008. On 6 April, 2008 he won the Swisscom Cup, his first title.
It has been speculated that Eren Derdiyok has been linked to a transfer to Beşiktaş J.K. or Newcastle United.
International career
Derdiyok has been a regular in the Swiss youth sides for the past few years, scoring seven goals in seven games for the Switzerland Under 19s and an even more impressive seven goals in five games for the Switzerland Under 21s. After impressing in the Swiss Super League for FC Basel and with the Switzerland Under 21 team, Derdiyok was called up and received his first cap for the Switzerland full team against England, in a game at Wembley, on February 6 2008, at the age of 19. Having come on as a substitute at half time, it only took 12 minutes for Derdiyok to take an excellent early shot (his first), with which he scored. He was included in Switzerland's squad to play at Euro 2008 where he was responsable for every assist on the Swiss national team in the tournament. He was also the youngest player involved in the tournament[1]
