Ellesmere Port railway station is located in the town of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England. It is one of the termini of the Wirral Line of the Merseyrail network, and is also served by Northern Rail trains to Helsby and Warrington Bank Quay.

The ticket office is staffed by Merseyrail Monday to Friday between 06:05 and 14:00. There has been a recent experiment on Saturdays to see whether the station can justify being opened at the weekend. At other times, passengers purchase tickets from conductors on board the train. On Wirral Line services, only tickets for travel on the Merseyrail network may be purchased, due to the lack of electronic ticket machines, but on Northern Rail services towards Helsby and Warrington, the full range of tickets is available.

History

The station is situated on the branch of the Birkenhead Railway from Hooton to Helsby which opened in 1863. The station itself opened on 1 July 1863, as Whitby Locks.[1] It was renamed Ellesmere Port on 1 September 1870.[1]

Ellesmere Port became part of the Merseyrail network in 1994, when the line from Hooton was electrified and through train services to Liverpool via Birkenhead commenced.

Services

Wirral Line services operate every 30 minutes each day (including Sunday) towards Birkenhead and Liverpool, with additional services operating in peak periods.

Northern Rail operates a limited rail service to Helsby via Ince & Elton and Stanlow & Thornton. There are two departures in the early morning and two in the early evening. There is no Sunday service. Some services continue to Warrington Bank Quay and one service continues to Liverpool Lime Street via Warrington and the Merseyrail City Line.
