History, release and popularity
Before the release of Barrio Fino, Daddy Yankee was well known to reggaeton fans.[citation needed] "Gasolina," however, became a worldwide hit, letting him gain popularity among Latino mainstream music fans as well, becoming a hit in Puerto Rico, the rest of Latin America, the United States, Canada, Europe, the Philippines, Japan, Australia, and Oceania. It reached #5 in the UK Singles Chart, #12 on the ARIA Singles Chart, and #32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Gasolina is one of the songs attributed with opening the door for reggaeton to become such a powerful force in the North American mainstream music scene. Other successful reggaeton songs were Oye Mi Canto and Mayor Que Yo. Gasolina stayed true to reggaeton’s musical stylings of synthesized beats yet had a catchy enough chorus for a bilingual, multi-racial, and socio-economically diverse following to develop.
