One Piece is a series of video games published by subsidiaries of Namco Bandai Holdings based on Eiichiro Oda's shonen manga and anime series of the same name. The series debuted in Japan on July 19, 2000 with One Piece: Mezase Kaizoku Ou!. The games take place in the fictional world of One Piece, and the stories revolve around the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates, the franchise's protagonists. Games of the One Piece series have been released on a variety of video game and handheld consoles. The games come in various genres, but their majority are role-playing games, predominantly in the early years, and fighting games such as the titles of the Grand Battle! sub-series.

While their "market is flooded with anime-themed games",[1] only a hand-full of the series' titles have been released outside of Japan, where they have been met with mixed reception, ranging from assessments such as "slightly below or slightly above average"[2] to being called "a grand video-game series".[3] These highly varying degrees of success can be attributed to the series' nature of being based on an anime and Japanese companies often producing such titles with haste and thusly low regard for quality.[4] While on the other hand, a game like One Piece, which has been produced for and exclusively released to the North American markets, has even been crowned "GBA Platformer of the Year" in 2005 by GameSpy's network of game websites.[4]
