Leon Jackson

Leon Jackson (born 30 December 1988) is a Scottish winner of the fourth series of the British television talent show The X Factor in 2007. His debut single, "When You Believe", was released in December of 2007; his debut album Right Now was released in October of 2008.

"When You Believe" charted at #1 in the UK & Ireland.[1]. His second single, "Don't Call This Love", was released on 12 October 2008, and charted at #3 in the United Kingdom[1] & #7 in Ireland.

Early life

Leon Jackson was born in Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland, and has lived there with his mother Wendy all his life.[2] Before pursuing his singing career, Jackson worked as a retail sales assistant with Gap for a number of years.[3] Jackson said that singing was the only thing that made him happy. He was a huge fan of contemporary jazz, his hero being Michael Bublé.[4] Before he made it through to the finals of The X Factor, Jackson has been planning to start an architectural technology course at Napier University.[4]

The X Factor

In 2007, Leon Jackson auditioned for the fourth series of The X Factor in Glasgow. He made it to the final stages and was announced the winner on 15 December 2007, winning a £1 million recording contract with Syco Music/Sony BMG.[5] He was mentored by Dannii Minogue.[5] In the final, he performed a duet with Kylie Minogue of "Better the Devil You Know".[5] Jackson was an outsider to win the competition, and his victory was described as "the biggest shock in the history of reality TV betting."[6] Louis Walsh has said the the difference on the night of the final was around 10%.[7] A number of viewers complained to watchdog Ofcom that they were unable to get through to vote for Jackson's rival Rhydian Roberts, but an Ofcom investigation found that Roberts had not been unfairly disadvantaged.[8][9]

On 11 February 2008, Jackson began the X Factor Live tour in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland with Rhydian Roberts, Same Difference and five other finalists from the 2007 show. They continued the tour in other venues around the UK until 21 March where the tour finished at London's Wembley Arena, thus concluding The X Factor 2007.

Right Now

In December 2007, Jackson performed with Canadian performer Michael Bublé at Wembley Arena, singing Bublé's "Home". Jackson said this was the highlight of his life as Bublé is his idol.[10] This invitation was repeated in July 2008 when Michael Bublé invited Leon on stage at the Glasgow SECC to sing "Lost" with him.

When asked about his debut album, Right Now, and his second single called "Don't Call This Love," Jackson said, "I can't wait just to get out there and start performing again. After The X Factor ended all I've been doing is working non-stop on this album. It's taken time and a lot of people probably thought I'd disappeared but the truth is this is my first album. It was important to spend time getting it right, getting it the album I wanted it to be. I've learnt so much in the past year, I've been writing songs and getting totally immersed in the music. I'm so proud of this." [citation needed]

Jackson performed "Don't Call This Love" on 11 October 2008 on the first X Factor Live show. The song peaked at number 3 on the UK singles chart.[1] His album Right Now was released on October 20, 2008 and debuted at number 4 on the UK Top 40 Albums chart for the week of October 26, 2008.[11] The following week, it slipped to #20 on the chart,[12] and the week after that, was at #37,[13] after which point it fell off the Top 40 Albums chart.[14]

Jackson was dropped by his record label in January 2009
