Leon Jackson

Leon Jackson (born 30 December 1988) is a Scottish singer and winner of the fourth series of the British television talent show The X Factor in 2007. His debut single, "When You Believe", was released in December of 2007. It peaked at #1 on the UK Singles Top 75 chart, and #1 on the Ireland Singles Top 50 chart, holding that position on the charts for three weeks. It then remained on the UK chart for an additional six weeks and the Ireland chart for an additional seven weeks.[1]

Jackson's second single, "Don't Call This Love", was released on 12 October 2008, peaking at #3 in the United Kingdom and #8 in Ireland.[2] His debut album Right Now was released in October of 2008. It peaked at #4 on the UK Top 75 chart, and #7 on the Ireland Top 75 chart, lasting for one week on each chart at that position. It spent a total of nine weeks on the UK chart and a total of five weeks on the Ireland chart.[3]

His third single, "Creative" was only available via digital download in 2008. It charted at #94 on the UK Singles Chart.[4]

His fourth single, "Stargazing", hit radio stations in January of 2009. It was also made available for purchase as a download-only single. [5]

Early life

Leon Jackson was born in Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland, and still lives there with his mother, Wendy.[6] Before pursuing his singing career, he worked as a retail sales assistant with Gap.[7] He was a huge fan of contemporary jazz, his hero being Michael Bublé, and has stated that during his early years, singing was the only thing that made him happy.[8] Before he appeared on The X Factor, Jackson was planning to attend Napier University, studying architectural technology.[8]

The X Factor

In 2007, Leon Jackson auditioned for the fourth series of The X Factor in Glasgow. During the show, he was mentored by Dannii Minogue. He made it to the final episode, and in the final, he performed a duet with Kylie Minogue of "Better the Devil You Know". He was announced the winner on 15 December 2007, winning a £1 million recording contract with Simon Cowell's company Syco, a division of Sony BMG.[9] Jackson was an outsider to win the competition, and his victory was described as "the biggest shock in the history of reality TV betting."[10] Louis Walsh said the the difference on the night of the final was around 10%.[11] A number of viewers complained to watchdog Ofcom that they were unable to get through to vote for Jackson's rival Rhydian Roberts, but an Ofcom investigation found that Roberts had not been unfairly disadvantaged.[12][13]

On 11 February 2008, Jackson began the X Factor Live tour in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland with Rhydian Roberts, Same Difference and five other finalists from the 2007 show. They continued the tour in other venues around the UK until 21 March where the tour finished at London's Wembley Arena, thus concluding The X Factor 2007.

Right Now

In December 2007, Jackson performed with Canadian performer Michael Bublé at Wembley Arena, singing Bublé's "Home". Jackson later said this had been the highlight of his life, because Bublé is his idol.[14] In July 2008, Michael Bublé again invited Leon to join him on stage at the Glasgow SECC for a duet of "Lost".[15]

Jackson appeared as a celebrity guest on the first live episode of series five of The X Factor on 11 October 2008, to perform his new single "Don't Call This Love". The song went on to peak at #3 on the UK singles chart.[2] His album Right Now was released on October 20, 2008 and debuted at number 4 on the UK Top 40 Albums chart for the week of October 26, 2008.[16] The following week, it slipped to #20 on the chart,[17] and the week after that, was at #37,[18] after which point it fell off the Top 40 Albums chart.[19]

The second single from the album, "Creative" was released as a download-only purchase in late 2008. It peaked at #94 on the UK download charts.[4][failed verification] The third single, "Stargazing" was released in January 2009, also as a download-only purchase.[5]

Don't Call This Love

Jackson's Second single "Don't Call This Love" was released on 12 October 2008. To promote the single Jackson apperared on shows such as GMTV, This Morning, The X Factor & Various Morning and TV Shoes. The song came into the UK Single charts at #3 and selling 100,000+.

Creative

The third single "Creative" was only able to be purchased by Digital Download. The song didn't do so well on the UK Download charts, charting at #94 and stayed there for 1 week only. But in 2009 it is beilieved that "Creative" has re-enterted various online charts at lower number than #94.

Stargazing

Stargazing is the fourth single from Leon. UK Fans from 7 February to 14 February 2009 downloaded the song from online websites such as Itnunes, HMV & others. The song has been sucesful on these charts charting #2 in the Itunes Vocal Chart & #9 on the HMV charts & #3 on the 7Digital Best selling songs. The song hit radio stations in January 2009.

2007 - 2008

After winning the X Factor in 2007, Jackson attented various award shows, and busy promoting his single and signing copies and instore siging. He also toured the UK With the X Factor live tour then recording his debut album Right Now. He also appeared back on the X Factor in 2008 to preform his 2nd single Don't Call This Love which was released 1 week before his album (12 October 2008). The single charted at #3 in the UK & #7 In Ireland and in total it sold over 100,000 copies. His third single which was released as a download only single Creative which was released in November 2008 and charted at #94 on the UK Singles Chart.

2009 - present

In Febuary 2009, Jackson is releasing his 4th single Stargazing. The song has seen alot of support from the UK fans. On Valentines Day UK Fans have been urged to download the song for it to break into the UK Download charts and hoping to do better than Creative. The song has been sucesful one other charts such as HMV charts with it charting at #9 and in the top 10 of the iTunes Vocal Chart.

Young Scot award

In April of 2008, Leon Jackson was awarded the "Young Scot" award, at Glasgow City Hall. He was given this award for being a positive role model to young people.[20]
