Puntland is a region in the northeastern part of the Republic of Somalia, in the Horn of Africa, whose leaders declared it an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland is not looking for international recognition as a nation separate from Somalia, but rather it considers itself a major federal division of a united Somalia within its federal republic.

Puntland is bordered by the, unrecognized, Republic of Somaliland in the northwest, Ethiopia in the south west, the Gulf of Aden in the north and the Indian Ocean in the east. It has territorial claims with Somaliland over the lands of Maakhir and the Northland State, both regions being officially part of the Republic of Somalia.
