Early comments

I am not sure, But I do not think ag that this is the same Mary Bethune that was a wife of the Canadian Prime Minister, John Joseph Caldwell Abbot. Spouses of the Prime Ministers of Canada must have a faulty link then? A newbie like me does not know quite how to go about fixing this. Also - there is mention in this article that cites Theodore Roosevelt, when in fact Bethune participated with Franklin D. Roosevelt in a number of New Deal-era social issues during his administration.corq 19:08, Dec 14, 2004 (UTC)

Rewrite necessary

This article needs to be rewritten almost from the top down. It is taken word for word from the website of Bethune-Cookman University you can read here, and how it has not been deleted before now for a copyright violation I don't know. I'm working on it, but Bethune was a formidable personality and a lot of information was written on her. I predict it will take me at least a week to do it. If you add to it, make sure that your references are correct. Mandsford took down the "citations needed" infobox, but I would put it back up until every part of Bethune's life has a credible reference. No article hurts from too many references. Notes

I'm not going to review this article for GAC but I noticed a few things that may be improved.

• Firstly, there are some style and phrasing issues. An example "McLeod attended Mayesville's one-room schoolhouse, Trinity Mission School that was run by the Presbyterian Board of Missions of Freedmen, after demonstrating a desire to read and write." The section in the middle breaks the flow of logic from one part to another. Perhaps two sentences one about her desire to learn and another about the school. Also, there are a few sections that have very short paragraphs which come across as quick notes on the subject. Perhaps a few of these could be elaborated on further or combined into larger paragraphs. These are largely style concerns that may or may not impact your good article review.

• An excellent job has been done describing Bethune's involvement with the founding and operation of Bethune-Cookman College. But there is precious little information on the modern institution. There should probably be two headings one for the original girls school and another for the college. There's also a story my grandmother told me about her selling Sweet Potato Pies to raise money for the girls school. I've heard it a few other places. I don't know if it's true or not but it's worth a mention either way.

• A lot of her life is anecdotal, but she told those stories, too. I included the one about the pies. I included a paragraph in the "Legacy" portion about Bethune-Cookman University today, but as her direct involvement ended in 1946, I didn't want this article to concentrate too much on the school since it's a biography. --Moni3 14:17, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Moni3

• Speaking of references. It helps if the references include the publisher, the author if posible, the publication date if possible, and if it's online the date it was accessed, and the ISBN if it's a published work. I didn't check to see if [[Wikipedia:Citation templates|citation templates] were used but they do help.

• I used inline references. Print references give the author's name if available, publisher, and publishing date.

I'm not sure how these things will affect the good article nomination for this article but I hope this information will help.

Good article nomination on hold

This article is close to GA level, but needs one fix before it can pass: Most of the images do not include source information. I fixed them up a bit. You can just make a heading for "Source" in most cases. Also, for public domain images you do not need a fair use rationale so I removed them. Fair use is only necessary for copyrighted images. Good work! --Bloodzombie 16:17, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Delta Sigma Theta membership

I deleted the information about DST because there's no reference. I wrote to the PR director of DST national to verify this, but it must have a citation. She's not on their notable members list. And nothing comes up when I searched her name on the website. In fact, Soror wrote and dedicated a poem to her Delta Sorors. Miranda added it to the listing of Notable DST Sorors. Date of Mary McLeod Bethune week?

I'm trying to determine if this is an official event and when it's celebrated. From browsing around it seems to be a D.C Commemorative holiday[1] from May 16th to May 22nd but I can't find anything definitive. It seems strange to start a week event on fixed day, Friday this year. I would think starting the Sunday before May 18th (anniversary of her death) might make more sense. Anyone know more? Thanks. Sorry, guys. The article is protected due to a high level of vandalism it endured. I am assuming a whole lot of students had to do reports on Mrs. Bethune, and did not appreciate the assignment. I copy edited it once, but it appears that I missed that. So thanks for pointing it out.
