Opening Summary

The first line which mentions where she was born and died interrupts the flow of the passage. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.223.240.156 (talk) 02:24, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Early comments

I am not sure, But I do not think ag that this is the same Mary Bethune that was a wife of the Canadian Prime Minister, John Joseph Caldwell Abbot. Spouses of the Prime Ministers of Canada must have a faulty link then? A newbie like me does not know quite how to go about fixing this. I guess there needs to be a disambiguation page or something. . . --Dvsuk17 23:21, 15 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I just fixed another confusion of the two ladies on the John Joseph Caldwell Abbot page. --Rob Russell 17:31, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also - there is mention in this article that cites Theodore Roosevelt, when in fact Bethune participated with Franklin D. Roosevelt in a number of New Deal-era social issues during his administration.corq 19:08, Dec 14, 2004 (UTC)

She could have worked with both Roosevelts. I am planning to add a bit from the 1930's Morris 21:16, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)

er....hi! er... so Bethune worked for Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, and Franklin Roosevelt(NOT Theodore Roosevelt) right?

I did a project on Bethune!

Fair use rationale for Image:Bethune1985.jpg

Image:Bethune1985.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot 14:48, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite necessary

This article needs to be rewritten almost from the top down. It is taken word for word from the website of Bethune-Cookman University you can read here, and how it has not been deleted before now for a copyright violation I don't know. I'm working on it, but Bethune was a formidable personality and a lot of information was written on her. I predict it will take me at least a week to do it. If you add to it, make sure that your references are correct. Mandsford took down the "citations needed" infobox, but I would put it back up until every part of Bethune's life has a credible reference. No article hurts from too many references. There is no reason this article cannot be a Featured Article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Moni3 (talkcontribs) 19:27, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

I'm not going to review this article for GAC but I noticed a few things that may be improved.

  • Firstly, there are some style and phrasing issues. An example "McLeod attended Mayesville's one-room schoolhouse, Trinity Mission School that was run by the Presbyterian Board of Missions of Freedmen, after demonstrating a desire to read and write." The section in the middle breaks the flow of logic from one part to another. Perhaps two sentences one about her desire to learn and another about the school. Also, there are a few sections that have very short paragraphs which come across as quick notes on the subject. Perhaps a few of these could be elaborated on further or combined into larger paragraphs. These are largely style concerns that may or may not impact your good article review.
  • An excellent job has been done describing Bethune's involvement with the founding and operation of Bethune-Cookman College. But there is precious little information on the modern institution. There should probably be two headings one for the original girls school and another for the college. There's also a story my grandmother told me about her selling Sweet Potato Pies to raise money for the girls school. I've heard it a few other places. I don't know if it's true or not but it's worth a mention either way.
  • A lot of her life is anecdotal, but she told those stories, too. I included the one about the pies. I included a paragraph in the "Legacy" portion about Bethune-Cookman University today, but as her direct involvement ended in 1946, I didn't want this article to concentrate too much on the school since it's a biography. --Moni3 14:17, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
  • "She had six students - four girls aged six to twelve, and her son Albert." Can someone with access to the reference check to see if it's five students or five girls?
  • Speaking of references. It helps if the references include the publisher, the author if posible, the publication date if possible, and if it's online the date it was accessed, and the ISBN if it's a published work. I didn't check to see if [[Wikipedia:Citation templates|citation templates] were used but they do help.
  • I used inline references. Print references give the author's name if available, publisher, and publishing date.

I'm not sure how these things will affect the good article nomination for this article but I hope this information will help.

Will work on this today. Thank you for the heads up. --Moni3 11:47, 8 October 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]

Good article nomination on hold

This article is close to GA level, but needs one fix before it can pass: Most of the images do not include source information. You need to show where you got the images so editors can verify their copyright status. Please reply here after you have fixed the images. --Bloodzombie 15:45, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I never know where to place all that info. I've added the location of the photos to three marked photos in the article. If I need to put it somewhere else, please advise. Thank you. --Moni3 15:59, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]
I fixed them up a bit. You can just make a heading for "Source" in most cases. Also, for public domain images you do not need a fair use rationale so I removed them. Fair use is only necessary for copyrighted images. Good work! --Bloodzombie 16:17, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As you wish. I added those fair use templates at the behest of another editor in another article. It's a lot less stressful just to ask individual editors what they want to see. Images leave me completely confuzzled. Thanks for the help. --Moni3 16:20, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Moni3[reply]

Delta Sigma Theta membership

I deleted the information about DST because there's no reference. I wrote to the PR director of DST national to verify this, but it must have a citation. She's not on their notable members list. And nothing comes up when I searched her name on the website. If the PR director gets back to me, and I can find published information about her membership, it stays in. --Moni3 (talk) 18:26, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a large sorority and has many notable members. Just a few are listed on the website. She is mentioned as an honorary member on page 84 of Paula Giddings In Search of Sisterhood. miranda 01:01, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, you might want to work on the references section, since they are not according to WP:CITE miranda 01:02, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. Since you have the reference, can you add the information in the "Honors" section, please? --Moni3 (talk) 05:41, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Miranda,

Thanks for adding the reference. I posted without reading your comments. Thanks again, HistoricDST 22:40, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mary McLeod Bethune was inducted into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1925. Here are some links: https://cms.ncr.nps.gov/mamc/historyculture/people_marymcleodbethune.htm http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-8325355.html In the Book In Search of Sisterhood written by Paula Giddings a lot of information on Mary McLeod Bethune involvement with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is provided. It says in ISOS that at one of our national conventions we took up a collection and paid the debt of the NCNW for Soror Mary McLeod Bethune. In fact, Soror wrote and dedicated a poem to her Delta Sorors. Miranda added it to the listing of Notable DST Sorors. It can be viewed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Delta_Sigma_Theta_sisters. Thanks, HistoricDST 22:38, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date of Mary McLeod Bethune week?

I'm trying to determine if this is an official event and when it's celebrated. From browsing around it seems to be a D.C Commemorative holiday[1] from May 16th to May 22nd but I can't find anything definitive. It seems strange to start a week event on fixed day, Friday this year. I would think starting the Sunday before May 18th (anniversary of her death) might make more sense. Anyone know more? Thanks. {{editsemiprotected}} Change BEASTLY to best

Under section National Council of Negro Women, in the quotation, the word best according to the quoted source (bottom of page) is spelled beastly.

just wanted to second the above...it's Moody, not Monody. I would have changed it myself, but the article appears to be protected.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by T543212345 (talkcontribs) 14:04, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, guys. The article is protected due to a high level of vandalism it endured. I am assuming a whole lot of students had to do reports on Mrs. Bethune, and did not appreciate the assignment. I copy edited it once, but it appears that I missed that. So thanks for pointing it out. The protection for the article will run out in June, when school is out. --Moni3 (talk) 14:14, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
