Pop Idol series 1
Template:Infobox reality music competitionThe first series of Pop Idol, a reality television show, was broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom during the winter months of 2001 and 2002. The show was a singing competition open to people aged between 16 and 26 years old, with the winner receiving a £1million recording contract to release their debut album. Pop Idol received ratings of as high as 10 million viewers for shows before the live final.[1]
Auditions were held during the early months and summer of 2001 in various locations across the United Kingdom. Selected acts were broadcast on a series of audition programmes in October 2001. The first live show was broadcast on 15 December 2001 and the live final was held on 9 February 2002. The competition was won by Will Young[2], with Gareth Gates finishing as the runner-up after a public vote. Both of the finalists went on to have chart successes with both their debut releases and subsequent material. Third-placed Darius Danesh also gained a record deal and achieved a string of top-40 hits in the United Kingdom, including a number-one single.[3]
The live shows were broadcast in two parts on Saturday evenings. Each of the contestants sang in an early show at around 19:00 GMT and the results were given in a show broadcast later in the evening.
Judges and presenters
The show had four judges who gave comments on both the auditions and live performances of the singers. Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman, Nicki Chapman and Neil Fox were the four judges. Pete, Nikki and Neil had also been judges on another reality television show with a similar format, Popstars.
Comedy duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (collectively known as Ant and Dec) presented the main shows on ITV1.
Live shows
The Semi Finals began airing on 10 November 2001, and consisted of five heats of ten singers. The performance shows were prerecorded on the previous Wednesday, and were shown on the Saturday, with the live results shows following after. Contestants dressed the same to create the illusion that the earlier performances were live. The two contestants from each heat with the most votes progressed to the top 10, where all shows were live. The live shows began on 15 December 2001, and continued through to the live final on 9 February 2002.
Finalists
William Young (Winner)
Will Young, (aged 22) from Wokingham, Berkshire won the competition. He was widely seen as the dark horse to win the title, but after the show was over, he was revealed to have lead the voting several times. Post show, Young has gone on to have a lengthy music career, and as of 2009 has released four albums, all of which have reached the top 2, as well as achieving four number one singles.
Gareth Gates (Runner Up)
Gareth Gates, (aged 17) from Bradford was the runner-up of the series. The widely accepted frontrunner, Gates spoke with a stammer, but it didnt effect him when he sang. He went on to release 4 number one singles, and three top 20 albums once the show was over.
Darius Danesh
Darius Danesh, (aged 21) from Glasgow was already known to the public after an embarrasing audtion on Popstars. He was originally eliminated from the competition in the top 50 stage, after failing to appear in the top 2 from his group, but he was given a reprieve when Rik Waller dropped out of the competition. He then went on to finish third in the competition, and scored a platnum selling album, and a number one single.
Zoe Birkett
Zoe Birkett from County Durham was the youngest finalist, aged 16. She was the highest placed female in the series, finishing in fourth place. After the show, she scored a top 20 single, and has appeared in many stage musicals.
Hayley Evetts
Hayley Evetts, (aged 25) from Birmingham was also known to the public after appearing on Popstars where she made the later stages. She went on to host several television presenting jobs, but failed to gain a record deal and hasnt released any material post show.
Rosie Ribbons
18 year old Rosie Ribbons was from Alltwen in South Wales. She was a favourite of judge Pete Waterman, and made him cry at her initial audition. She signed to Telstar Records after the show, but her debut album was scrapped due to financial difficulties at the company. Ribbons did however release two top 20 singles in the UK. In 2007 she was a semi-finalist in Australian Idol after moving abroad, but failed to make the finals.
Laura Doherty
Laura Doherty, (aged 19) came from Derry in Northern Ireland. She was in the bottom two or three every week until her elimination in the fourth week of the finals.
Aaron Bayley
Aaron Bayley was originally a train driver who came from Newcastle. At 26 years old, he was the oldest of the series finalists. He was eliminated in the third week of the finals, despite never previously appearing in the bottom two or three.
Jessica Garlick
Originating from Kidwelly in South Wales, 20 year old Jessica Garlick placed 9th in the show. She went on to represent the United Kingdom in the 20002 Eurovision Song Contest, where she placed joint 3rd, a result which remains the UK's best performance in the competition since 1998.
Rik Waller
Rik Waller from Gillingham in Kent was forced to resign from the competition after losing his voice. An early tip to win the show, he was given a bye to the second live show, but with his voice failing to improve he was unable to participate and had to leave. He was replaced by Darius Danesh. After the show ended, he appeared on reality shows Back to Reality and Celebrity Fit Club and released two singles.
Korben
21 year old Korben, (born Chris Niblett) was the first finalist to be eliminated from the show. In the week leading up to his elimination, he was outed by tabloid newspapers, which led to speculation that this had hurt his chances in the competition.

- Darius Danesh was originally eliminated on the 8 December results show, placing third in his semi-final. However, he returned to the show when Rik Waller, who had won the heat was forced to pull out of the competition. Darius started competing from the 22 December show.

- Although she failed to make the top 10, Sarah was still signed by Simon Cowell. She released two singles which charted in the UK. Cowell later stated in an interview that he introduced the wildcard round in the second series of Pop Idol to avoid prematurely losing talented contestants like Whatmore.
- Hayley successfully reauditioned for the second series of Pop Idol in 2003, becoming the only member of this years semi finalists to again make it to the top 50. However, she was again eliminated at this stage.

- Only nine of the singers performed on the night as Rik Waller had a throat infection that prevented him from singing.[4] The Pop Idol chiefs allowed Waller to sit out the first week and, if he had recovered, let him compete from the second week. [4] A decision was made that if he failed to recover, Darius Danesh (who had missed out on a place in the final 10 in the same heat as Waller) would take his place. [5] Waller visited a doctor in the week following the first show to assess his condition.[6]
- After the series ended, it was revealed that Will Young had the most votes this week, with Gareth Gates polling second and Zoe Birkett third.
- Korben Niblett left the show after receiving the lowest number of votes.[4]

Final 2 (9 February 2002)
In the week leading to the final performances, finalists Gareth Gates and Will Young both went on individual nationwide pablicity campaign tours, visiting radio-stations, newspapers and performances in a bid to help generate support. Both finalists travelled in their own personal bus. [16]
