CHERUB is a series of young adult spy novels, written by the English author Robert Muchamore. They are sometimes compared to the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz, the Jimmy Coates books by Joe Craig or the Six of Hearts series by Jack Heath. After years of speculation, Muchamore revealed in the Henderson's Boys novel Eagle Day that CHERUB stood for Charles Henderson Espionage Research Unit B.[1]

The books centre around a division of the British Security Service named CHERUB who employ orphans as intelligence officers.[2] Initially, the series follows James Adams as he enters CHERUB and performs various missions. However, the focus later turns to his sister Lauren and several other characters who get vital roles in the novels.

After the success of the series in the United Kingdom, the books have been released in the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia, and translated into several languages including French, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese. A film adaptation was also commissioned; however, there has been little progress made public to date. Man Vs. Beast was the last book to be published in the USA.[3]

Henderson's Boys is a spin-off series about the early days of CHERUB when Charles Henderson founded the organisation.[15] The series begins in 1940, during World War II, and follows stories based around the events of the time, including the Battle of Britain and the Battle of France. As it documents the creation of CHERUB, it also reveals details of how it is organised and what the name stands for.

Film

Originally, production company Jigsaw Films bought the rights to a film version of the CHERUB books. However, the film was never produced due to its high cost.[citation needed] In February 2009, it was publicised that Jigsaw and BBC Films would together be adapting The Recruit into a screenplay, written by Ronan Bennett, which Christopher Smith would direct.[19] The film will be produced by Rebecca Farhall, Courtney Pledger and Sarah Radclyffe and may begin to be shot as early as 2009.[citation needed]
