Sullia (Tulu:ಸುಳ್ಯ) (also known as Sulya) is a taluk in Dakshina Kannada district of the state of Karnataka, India. It is a small town, surrounded with evergreen wooded mountains being a part of the Western Ghats range in South India. Sullia has plantations of rubber, areca nut, coconut, cashew nut, black pepper and banana. Education centers in Sullia offers variety of continuing educations to students from around the world. The road connecting the two major cities of Karnataka; Mysore and Mangalore runs through Sullia.

History

The name Sullia comes from the word "suli," which in Tulu means "whirlpool". This whirlpool is near Kurunjibhag and is very dangerous. It was previously mentioned as Amara Sulya in many historical books.[1]. One of the historical revolution took place during 1837 when majority of the Gowdas from Amara Sullia, Madikeri and Bhagamandala went and fought for the freedom against BRITISH.

They could hoist their flag in Mangalore and on their way back they were caught by BRITISH due to the leakage of their hideouts by Kodavas. Kodava Rajas due to the threat from Tippu Sultan had become more loyal to British and they helped in curbing the GOWDAS from rising against BRITISH in 1837. It was hence named after it as "AMARA SULLIA DHANGE"

The Academy of Liberal Education, founded in 1967 by Dr. Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda, provided Sullia with nationwide recognition for its excellence in educational services.

People & culture

Inherited from the mother nation India, Sullia is a home for people from all religions. Sullia is famous for its rich religious tradition. The majority of residents are Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Jains. The main languages of Sullia are Kannada[citation needed], Are-kannada (Arebhashe) and Havyaka Kannada (Havigannada). Also Tulu, Konkani and Kodava languages are spoken.

The culture of Sullia is the blend of Tulunadu and Kodagu. As the majority of Sullia consists of Arebhashe Gowdas, where many of them are migrated inhabitants from Kodagu district, bearing the customs and traditions conform to that of Kodagu ethnic.[citation needed] The other communities follow the Tulunadu(Dakshina kannada) culture.

Climate

The monsoon rains during the months of June to September. The spring season occurs during the month of November to January. During this season the local temperature ranges between 15°C (59°F) to 25°C (77°F). The summer or dry season between the month of February to May

Economy / Agriculture

Economy of Sullia is mainly attributed to agriculture and horticulture. The region has got fertile land and rich water resources. It is blessed by nature to help grow rubber trees, areca nut, cashew nut, rice, banana,venilla and jackfruit.

Media

News media Suddi Bidugade is the local weekly newspaper, publishing local events in Kannada language. Other popular Kannada daily newspapers covering wider global area news are Udayavani, Sanjevani, Kannada Prabha, Prajavani. English newspapers available on the local news stands are Deccan Herald, The Hindu and The Times of India.

  • Sullia has suspension bridges (locally known as hanging bridges) helping local pedestrians to cross across Payashwini river. These bridges also attract a lot of tourists.
  • Payaswini and Kumaradhara are the major two rivers of Sullia.
  • Kumara Parvata mountain is one of the famous trekking paradises situated near Sri Kukke Subramanya Temple.
  • "Koli Kamale" a famous trekking place in peraje, Kodagu district (7 kilometers from sullia)
  • Abbey Falls is 10 kilometers from Madikeri (50 kilometers from Sullia).
  • Sri Kukke Subramanya Temple, situated in Subramanya (village) around 44 kilometers from Sullia, is a famous pilgrimage location.
  • Sri Mallikarjuna Temple, situated in Thodikana around 15 Kilometers from Sullia, is a famous pilgrimage location and also a famous tourist place.

Nature hiking

Sullia, geographically being located in a cradle of Western Ghats surrounded with rich green woods, forms a main attraction spot for the nature hiking individuals and groups. It accommodates several mountains, to name a few, Kumara Parvatha, Bisila Ghaati, Bantamale, Patti Gudde and Sampaje Ghaati, in and around.

The places mentioned may be the perfect choices for trekkers and mountaineers. They contain a variety of landscapes with small and large water streams. On the pathways, one would come across diverse species of flora and fauna. In the middle of nature, it would be a tireless day long walk. Mountain tops, with a mild breeze under the sparkling sky, would be a soothing place to relax and get ready for the return trek.

This institution is for orphans and poor people among the Muslim community. Here boarding such children is organized and responsibility taken to educate them.

The following organizations offer both long distance and local transportation.

  • Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) owned by Govt of Karnataka.
  • Buses and taxicabs (Usually shared by many passengers to cut cost) transport services by local private parties.
  • 3-Wheeler Auto Rickshaw (taxi) for local short distance transportation.
  • Nearest railway station is Puttur train station. The new train (started from 08-December-07)between Mangalore and Bangalore is passing through Subramanya.
