Matthew Buchanan (born Matthew Hanen Rappaport[1]) is a fictional character on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live.

Casting

The role was portrayed by child actors Steven and Nicholas Towler from 1999 to June 2000 and Ian Chandler Sheaffer from July 2000 to May 2001.[1] Best known in the part is Eddie Alderson, who assumed the role in May 2001 and was put on contract with the series in December 2008.[4][5] Alderson's real-life older sister Kristen[4] has portrayed Matthew's friend Starr Manning on the series since March 1998.[6][7]

Character history

In October 1998, Bo is devastated when his son Drew, a police officer, is killed in the line of duty.[8] Bo's wife Nora hopes to conceive a child to give Bo a reason to live; out of desperation she turns to former flame Sam Rappaport. The pregnancy pulls Bo back onto his feet, but he and Nora later divorce when Bo learns that Nora's son had been fathered by Sam. Sam dies in 2003, leaving a letter behind stating that Bo is actually Matthew's biological father.[1][9]

In May 2005, Matthew suffers the death of his former "sister" Jennifer, Sam's daughter. It is revealed that Jennifer had been murdered by Matthew's stepfather (Nora's husband) Daniel Colson in his effort to cover up the murder of Paul Cramer, who had been blackmailing Daniel.

Matthew changes his name to Buchanan on June 17, 2005 as a Father's Day gift to Bo.[1] Matthew has shared a long friendship with Starr Manning, who often manages to get him tangled up in her schemes.

In 2008, Matthew starts High school as a freshman. He begins to have trouble fitting in, but has help from his friend (who is under his mother's care) Cole Thornhart. He also finds a potential friend in a feisty and intelligent girl named Destiny. Early in 2009, Matthew begins to try impressing a girl at school, Becca. He lies to his parents, telling them he is doing pot. Bo considers sending him to Military school, but decides not to. In March, Matthew attends a dance, where Becca dances with him on a dare and another boy, Justin, has the DJ dedicate a song to Becca in Matthew's name. Becca tells everyone that she didn't really like Matthew and that she only danced with him because of the dare, causing everyone there(except Destiny, who was disgusted by Justin and Becca's cruelty)to laugh at him. Embarrassed, Matthew runs out and gets in a car with Cole, who is high on painkillers. They crash and Matthew is injured. He then finds out that he is paralyzed from the waist down. While he is devastated over this news and is still struggling with the aftermath, he doesn't blame Cole for the accident and still regards him as a friend . Later, there is a chance for him to walk again in a surgery that was to be conducted by his friend Destiny's older brother Greg. His then would be stepfather Clint, who is also his uncle, got him to impress his mother Nora. Despite Greg high success ratings, Nora and Bo couldn't let go of the few failures and the risks that has death as one, like all surgeries have. Thanks to Destiny , they sue his parents with a hated lawyer, Tea Delgado. The trail is almost put off, as a day before the wedding of Nora and Clint, Bo and Nora passionately kiss. Both Matthew and Destiny witness this and only a couple hours before the wedding blackmail them. Bo WATCHES AS MATTHEW GOES to tell Clint, but doesn't as Matthew saw it as hurting the only guy who tried to help him walk again. Matthew talks to God out loud before the wedding with doubts, almost succumbing to his parents with Destiny eavesdropping. When he starts talking about dying, eventually she starts crying. He attempts to kiss her a little later, but Tea, who was invited by Todd to the wedding, because Vicki Lord and Charlie Banks and Nora and Clint thought it would be nice for a double wedding. Both Tea and Destiny later get him to tell his lawyer what happened and succeeded. Matthew makes her promise not to mention it at court, and she doesn't because Elijah Clarke, Nora and Bo's lawyer has an untold secret he would say in court. In court, it seems almost too obvious that Destiny and Matthew like each other. Later in court Tea is very rude while questioning Matthew's sister Rachel and he fires her.
