"Overprotected"
Song

"Overprotected" is a Grammy Award-nominated dance-pop song by American pop singer Britney Spears released from the album Britney. It was the third single release in the US, while in other parts of the world, it was the second.

The song is another product of the pop songwriting and producing team made up of Max Martin and Rami, though the Darkchild Remix of the song was produced by Rodney Jerkins. The single was released in its original version in Europe, but as the Darkchild Remix in the U.S. Thus, there were two different music videos released to promote the song. Spears said of the song, "This is a song I can relate to on a personal basis, because I feel kind of overprotected. When I want to go out, everything has to be organized in advance. I think that other kids of my age can relate to it to a certain extent." [1]

In 2003, Spears was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song but lost to Norah Jones's "Don't Know Why".

Music videos

International video

For the release of the original version of the song internationally, Spears reunited with director Billie Woodruff ("Born to Make You Happy"). The video was shot in the second half of November 2001 in Los Angeles and was released on December 6, 2001 coinciding with the international single's release.

The music video for "Overprotected" begins with Spears driving away from the intrusive media, with a part of the instrumental version of the song "Bombastic Love", featured on the album Britney, playing. She makes her way into an alleyway and decides to enter an abandoned factory, hoping her pursuers will be thrown off course. When she enters the building she begins to dance her way around the warehouse. Spears' dancers, having spotted her walking into the factory, follow her inside. They find Spears dancing around and joke about it, before heading into a heavy dance routine. Towards the end of the video, we see segments of Spears in a room with walls covered in pictures and articles about herself. These walls move in and out before the video ends, signifying that she is "overprotected".

In the video Spears uses clothes of the Argentine company/signature "Kosiuko". She decided to use these clothes in her video because she felt it was tasteful. The clothes were given to the singer by the makers, to promote their products in the American market, since they had recently opened fashion houses in Miami and other cities in America.

Darkchild Remix video

For the release of the Darkchild Remix of the song in the U.S., this video was directed by Chris Applebaum from March 2-4, 2002 on location in Los Angeles and was first aired on March 26, 2002. The video begins during the day with Spears and her friends playing in a hotel room. A negative report about Spears comes up on the television news, and she and her friends express their disagreement with the report. Spears then makes a telephone call to her bodyguard, and using a cloth to disguise the sound of her voice, coaxes him to leave the area so that her group may sneak out of the hotel and enjoy the day. They run into an elevator and fool around briefly with the security cameras before going up to the main lobby. A strut down the lobby of the hotel and a short dance sequence follows. After this, Spears's group runs out of the hotel and gets into into an SUV, and proceed to drive away down the street. The interior the SUV transforms into into a limo-like dance hall, and Spears and her friends dance inside. Next, a choreographed dance sequence from the lobby is shown with strobe lights going off. Continuing from the SUV, the groups exits the van and runs into an alleyway. It is late now, and heavy rain begins to fall. Spears dances in the rain along with her friends, and a crowd of paparazzi is shown in front of a building. At the end of the video we discover that Spears and her friends dancing in the rain was the negative news story being reported at the start of the video. The video retired on MTV's TRL, and due to the public demand, was aired on MTV Latinamerica. The lobby setting in the music video also happens to be the same lobby setting that was used the music video for Janet Jackson's "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)".

Chart performance

"Overprotected (The Darkchild Remix)" reached a peak of number eighty-six on the Billboard Hot 100.[2] Though the track failed to chart on the Hot 100 Airplay, it still had managed to chart on the Hot 100 as it was released as a vinyl single, which allowed it to chart even though its airplay was poor.

The story was the same at Top 40 radio, as the song failed to chart on either the Top 40 Tracks or Rhythmic Top 40, though it did make it into the lower reaches of the Mainstream Top 40. It was received well in the United Kingdom debuting at five and moving up to four in its second week. The single sold 124,000 copies. The single has sold worldwide 2 million copies, and was a success in Chile, Argentina and Mexico.[3]
