which century??

The sentence "On 30 January 2009, three days on from their victory over Hull, he grabbed another goal in United's 5-0 thrashing of Wigan in their final game of the century."

should be replaced with "On 30 January 2009, three days on from their victory over Hull, he grabbed another goal in United's 5-0 thrashing of Wigan."

(It is factually incorrect to refer to a century ending then. The previous one ended nine years before). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.3.255.103 (talk) 18:50, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Information missing, please fix

from the article: "In April 2006, he was awarded £100,000 in libel damages from tabloids The Sun and News of the World, who had claimed that he had assaulted her in a nightclub. Rooney donated the money to charity.[3]"

Who is 'her'?

Phoney Euro 2008 template

Somebody has vandalised the Euro 2004 template at the bottom of the article amongst the navigation boxes. I would fix it if I knew how; but bringing it to the attention of somebody who knows how is the next-best thing. All of the links are mixed up and don't link to the right players. - esp —Preceding undated comment was added at 21:38, 15 September 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Career Injury History

Rooney has been prone to foot injuries, made infamous during Englands last major International Tournament where he was a bit-part player due to being selected when not 100% fit.

Rooneys latest injury set back was caused against Reading on the opening day of the 2007-2008 Premiership season. Under a challange from Michael Duberry he suffered a hairline fracture of the left foot and is due to be out for 4-6 weeks. He was also injured for about 4 weeks in November 2007 after injuring himself in training while playing "head tennis". Seymour69er 18:55, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamo Brownwings?

Surely that's not a real team name —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.163.53.22 (talkcontribs) 15:42, 14 August 2007

A quick google search reveals countless mentions of the “Dynamo Brownwings” but all of them with some reference to Rooney seemingly copied verbatim from the Wikipedia article. If you search for ‘”Dynamo Brownwings” -Rooney’ (sans single quotes) you get no results at all. All we need now is for someone to add a citation linking to a newspaper article that copied this information from Wikipedia and it's fact! Jmorkel (talk) 15:19, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Very factual... NOT

The date is the 16th September and I have just been reading the Disciplinary Action section. It seems some Portuguese idiot has said that the English always look for an excuse or some deluded shit like that. Portugal are a crap team of divers. With our magnificent Owen injured and our brilliant Rooney sent off you still couldn't beat us in normal time or extra time. To the person who wrote that crap about England, first learn proper grammar before you post it on a Wikipedia article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.219.95.3 (talk) 08:08, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated

Riveness 14:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC) England goals section has repeated entries. Too games against Crotia and Switzerland on the same days?[reply]

No, he scored two goals in each of those matches, so he gets two entries in the table. -- Arwel (talk) 00:47, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Out of date

I think the whole part about where he played with van Nistelrooy should be changed as it's a bit out of date now. Something like "He usually played as a second striker to Louis Saha for his club team however the 07/08 season has seen him playing in a more centre forward role with new signing Carlos Tevez playing as second striker" —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andy86 (talkcontribs) 00:29, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I definately agree- who he used to play with 3 years ago surely isn't something that should be in the main introduction/description of his playing postion? —Preceding unsigned comment added by jamh2000 (talkcontribs) 13:19, 2 March 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.243.253.217 (talk) [reply]

Rooney's Sponsorship Deals

Is it worth mentioning that Rooney's vast wealth comes partly from 'human rights friendly' Coca Cola and Nike? Would it be worth adding a section called 'HOW Wayne's Sponsor's are able to pay one person so much money', or maybe one called 'Is Wayne Rooney tarnished by his sponsorship deals?' —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.74.167.59 (talk) 03:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds like a bitter Everton fan to me. What about Beckham? What about all the "celebs" who get paid silly money to advertise products which they probably don't even use? Andy86 (talk) 15:24, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that basic comment, I don't support a football team but I can tell you do.

I added this because some Wayne Rooney fans like yourself might also be unaware of Nike and Coca Cola's history of alleged child labour, and workers' rights abuses. Some Wayne Rooney fans might be concerned that their hero appears to be supporting companies who have exploited poor countries in the past. Maybe Wayne himself is completely unaware of where his advertising money comes from and if he knew, would worry his image might suffer?

One inference Roonyites could make is that because Wayne advertises Nike; he is in favour of cheap child labour used for stitching Nike football boots. Another inference one could make is: 'Because Wayne drinks Coke, he is in favour of Coca Cola polluting water supplies in India and smashing trade union groups in Colombia' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Coca-Cola) I doubt Wayne is in favour of any of this but you could see how fans might be confused. It could also be argued that if Wayne Rooney is so wealthy that he could stop advertising for Nike and Coca Cola and it would not financially cripple him - but he chooses to accumulate even more.

In defence of Wayne, I will point out that he will probably give more money to charity and deserving causes than you, me, or anyone reading this article will. It may even be argued that Wayne is taking from the rich (Nike and Coke) and giving to the poor (SOS and UNICEF). Therefore the main article should also include a section about the large amount of charity work he does.

But my original point was: If Wayne is paid millions of pounds to adveritse an immorally produced product; then does this make him look immoral too? After all it is not only his appualingly aggressive temperament on the football pitch, which will shape young people's opinion of him.

Personally, I dont see why we should include sponsorship information unless something extremely controversal come up. Rooney isn't the only famous person in the planet. Almost celebrities out there has a sponsor. With globalization, almost every major company out there are either doing something immoral, or doing business with someone who are doing something immoral. I think any reader who are honest with themselves know that [insert any celebrity's name] is probably being sponsored by an immoral company.Elsonlam1 (talk) 05:45, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Irish ancenstry

I've heard from several sources that Wayne Rooney has stong Irish roots. Wondering if this is true, and if so noteworthy.Alexsanderson83 (talk) 19:05, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has been said that Wayne's brother has elected to play for Ireland; I don't think that can happen because all Wayne's grandparents were born in England. Brakn (talk) 17:08, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

he has irish roots and so does steven gerrard and michael owne and kevin nolan

Playing position

I changed playing position from "second striker" in "striker" because he, that also can play as second striker, usally plays centre forward and somethimes is the only pure forward in the starting 11 of Manchester Utd. Swirlan --Swirlan (talk) 12:30, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rooney is clearly a second striker who is currently being used further forward. Most of the time his role as a striker is only nominal at best. If Rooney was a striker then why is Man Utd constantly linked with big name strikers each and every season? Why would they also hold onto Saha despite him being a complete crock? I've reverted the edit or at least I would have done so had I been able to log in. Someone else will need to revert it until I can figure out what the problem is... --83.67.93.112 (talk) 19:38, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It should be changed to simply 'striker'. he played a lone striker role against arsenal in the 4-0 FA cup victory, and was brilliant, so saying his role is nominal is untrue. his best position is in fact as a second striker, but he is in fact a striker. the fact that man united are linked with big name strikers every year is that journalists who think they know more than sir alex ferguson seem to believe united need one, when in fact they can play very well without one. 86.14.244.186 (talk) 11:36, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Assist table

Someone should get to work on getting an Assist table up for Rooney, considering that he collects a fair few. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.9.151.226 (talk) 18:44, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be entirely useful though? In general, the most used, and looked-at stats, are appearances and goals scored. Bringing assists into it would lead to debate about what is considered an assist and what isn't. Appearances and goals are far more clear cut, I think assists would just complicate matters. Pullshapes (talk) 00:36, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Assists are becoming much more frequently used in judging a player's ability, especially second strikers like Rooney and Tevez, whose abilities will never be accurately reflected by goals/games. The Premier League has an official assists table and ESPN covers assists in its stats pages (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=21046&cc=5739). As long as the assists are well sourced, there's no reason not to include them. Wiki should be comprehensive. 78.86.168.169 (talk) 23:19, 3 May 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Rooney actually doesn't have many assists, and rarely features in the Premier League top 10. Stating the fact that he only actually has 7 assists in the last 2 years, hardly makes much of a statement —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.128.223.67 (talk) 15:00, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, Rooney's premier league assist totals for the last 4 seasons, as per his ESPN player profile page (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=21046&cc=5901), are 10 (2005/06), 11 (2006/07), 13 (2007/08) & 7 (2008/09). Other sources may have slightly different numbers. These are high numbers for a striker. It would be useful to highlight this other dimension og the player's ability. --87msa. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87msa (talkcontribs) 04:00, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Council estates

Since he was underage at the time and therefore ineligible for a professional contract, he was playing for £80 a week and living with his family on one of the country's council estates.

One of the country's council estates?? That should be one of the city's (i.e. Liverpool's) council estates, right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.12.245 (talk) 22:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

number of goals are wrong

rooney has scored 97 goals for manchester united, not 65 as the box in the right hand corner states 92.9.42.30 (talk) 03:54, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Goals are correct. See the note at the bottom of the infobox. "Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only and correct as of..."  LATICS  talk  07:03, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

whats the point in just having league games only when he can play in just as many games in the various cup competitions 92.9.42.30 (talk) 04:18, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't ask me, I didn't create the infobox. Ask at WP:FOOTY or the the template talk page if you wish to inquire. But, let me also add that there is a stats table that shows all of Wayne Rooney's appearances and goals.  LATICS  talk  04:38, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He's scored 97 in all competitions (available at the bottom. The info box only relates to league games. It hardly matters, as it would just be 97 in about 300 games, rather than 67 in 190 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.128.223.67 (talk) 15:02, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

with respect, they are wrong and 176 is the correct height. The Man Utd official site supercedes Sky Sports/PFA in terms of reliability. Should be changed. --94.195.129.125 (talk) 14:40, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Who says that the Man Utd site supersedes the PFA Who's Who or the Sky Sports Yearbook? They are all as reputable as each other. – PeeJay 22:08, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Since the Man Utd figures are taken from player medicals they are evidently going to be more accurate. There was a few years ago a tendency for teams to overstate the height of footballers but by and large this is now being corrected. I presume a lot of the figures you see in yearbooks are relics of this. Either that, or there is a focus on selling the books in the US where people seem a bit more obsessive about precise physical characteristics of sports stars. --94.195.129.125 (talk) 18:13, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But how do you know that the club's website takes its data from the player's medical examinations? – PeeJay 19:31, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Of course I have no way of proving this but seriously, where else would they take them from? Of course it's going to be measured at a medical exam. If they have this data why would they use some other random piece of data? In any case it's patently false that he's 5 ft 10. If you look at pictures of the Man Utd team he is a touch shorter than the 177cm Park (who is also wrongly listed on here) and a touch taller than the 175cm Nani.--94.195.129.125 (talk) 14:13, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dynamo Brownings Again

This was brought up here in 2007 but is still in the article. Are there any sources to confirm that he played for this team (or that the team even exists)? Google has nothing on Dynamo Brownings except in reference to rooney (presumably copied from wikipedia). Can anyone with a copy of his autobiography confirm whether or not the team is mentioned there? If not then I think that this needs to be removed from the article. Everton at risk of administration

The article states that "At the time of the signing, Everton were close to administration and needed money to stay afloat." This is both against NPOV and has no citation. As an Everton fan i think it is also a bit far fetched, Everton were not close to administration - clearly we wanted to keep him but financially it made Everton better off - but Everton were not clost to administration no needed the money to "stay afloat" - this is nonsense. 89.241.20.133 (talk) 18:19, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've made an amendment to the text - although i have also removed the additional information about £10m being paid off as this has no verification and again it mentions keeping off administration - Everton were never in that positionBabydoll9799 (talk) 18:29, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rooney's United goal tally

For some reason his career tally is 86, even though back in August this summer he scored his 100th United goal, not to mention the fact that United's website has him at 120 goals so far. Can't we do a bit better than that? Multiple pundits and journalists have claimed him to be England's key player, why is this not mentioned?

In fact the whole international section is out of date. Odd that nothing's been added in four years despite him being top scorer in world cup qualifying, earning his 50th cap and captaining the side against Brazil. Perhaps also mention his goal drought in competitive internationals between Euro 2004 and the Estonia match in October 2007. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihfiua (talkcontribs) 22:02, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
