Bishop George Ahr High School, also known as Bishop Ahr, Ahr or BGA, is a four-year, private, coeducational Roman Catholic high school located on a thirty-six acre campus in the northern section in Edison, New Jersey. It is a member of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, which is headed by Bishop Paul G. Bootoski.

As of the 2006-07 school year, the school had an enrollment of 913 students and 58 classroom teacher for a student–teacher ratio of 15.7.[2]

The school opened in 1969 as St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and was renamed for Bishop George Ahr in 1984.

Students come from Middlesex, Union, Monmouth, and Somerset Counties in Central New Jersey.

The administration and teaching faculty are composed of Felician Sisters and lay people. All 70 faculty members hold a B.S. or B.A. degree; a significant percentage have M.A. degrees and some hold a Ph.D. Bishop George Ahr High School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the New Jersey Department of Education.

Athletics

The Bishop George Ahr High School Trojans compete in the Greater Middlesex Conference, which includes public and private high schools located in the greater Middlesex County area. The league operates under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.

The wrestling team won the 2007 Non-Public South B sectional championship with a 46-27 win over Holy Cross.[3]

The 1996 Baseball team won the Greater Middlesex County Tournament with a win over rival Edison High School. Senior pitcher Kevin Lawrence pitched to a 12-0 record that year to lead the team to a 21-6 record.

The 2006 baseball team won the Non-Public South A sectional championship over St. Augustine, 16-15.[4]

The swimming team won the Greater Middlesex Conference for three years running, from 2005-2007.

The gymnastic team captured state titles for five consecutive years, from 2003-2007.

The softball team took the Non Public South A Sectional title overcoming Holy Spirit, Camden Catholic, and Gloucester Catholic, and were runners up for the Non Public A State Tournament in a 10 inning upset to Immaculate Heart Academy in 2009. The Trojans made their way past the opening state game for the first time in seven years under the first year coaching of Missy Magyar.

Music Department

The Music Department at Bishop Ahr is notable for its dedicated members whom some have called a subculture. The Music Department is headed by Joseph Cullinan, Alumnus of BGA. His predecessor, Christopher Test of Toms River, served as Music Department head for many years with the motto "We Can Fix That". The music department consists of the Honors Choir, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Marching Band, Pit Band, Concert Band, and the Liturgical Musicians, not to mention the Pep Band.

Notable alumni

  • Ed Kalegi (born 1967), actor / narrator / host / voice actor. Public Address Announcer for both the New York Yankees' minor league team in Staten Island as well as the New Jersey Ironmen of the XSL and one the Public Address Announcers for the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. Actor in the motion picture Sugar, which will be released nationwide by Sony Pictures Classics in April 2009. Actor portraying "Dennis" in the animated musical comedy "The Champion" which will be released in 2011. Has appeared in several television programs including "Law and Order SVU" and "Damages." Popular New York area Live Event Host.
  • Tom DeSanto (born 1968), producer of the X-Men movies and Transformers.
  • Kevin Mulvey (born 1985), drafted by the New York Mets as their first pick in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft.[5]
  • Ivette Sosa (born 1976), a member of the disbanded girl group, Eden's Crush.
  • Darrin Winston (1966–2008), Major League Baseball player who played two seasons in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies.[6]
  • Angelo Soprano (Fiouris) (born 1969) Member of the "WKTU Morning Show" on 103.5 FM 1999-2002 Also Co host of "Sports in the Morning" on WNEW 102.7 where he partnered with gravelly voice sports host Scott Ferrall. Has also appeared in TV commercials as well having provided voiceover for numerous TV and Radio projects.
  • Christopher "Scoopkid" Hopper (born 1991), all american scoop player. Attending Harvard University.
