Image EXIF Data Not Added To Pictures

{{help}} to which ever applies and im not sure which would know more....

Hi there, iv just uploaded one of my dads copyrighted pictures, with a copyright tag in the exif data but after the upload, the copyright/exif information was not shown...why was that? - Sophie (Talk) 03:04, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so, EXIF stuff is cool, and a good thing, however - it doesn't replace the copyright tag stuff.
It gives more info on the pic - when it was taken, where, etc. Possibly by whom. Sometimes (professionals like yr Dad) put info on copyright status in there too...however it's not really a standard format.
Heh; I expect you knew there was a 'however' coming, right? :-)
You know how, on wiki?edia, I always state that we need a ultra-clear, ultra-explicit statement, giving appropriate permission? Well, EXIF is not enough.
Treat the EXIF as 'useful extra facts', but it ain't a licence.
Also - it's better[citation needed] to upload to Commons.
Yea but why didnt the exif data show up because iv seen it for other pictures? - Sophie (Talk) 22:07, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But - your Dad owns copyright, and not you. So, you cannot give us permission. Because, you don't own the copyright.
We need to hear it from him - right? Otherwise, anyone could upload the pics he took and 'give permission'.
He can do so in several ways;
  • He could upload 'em himself - by creating a user account, and uploading to commons as "entirely my own work"
  • He could put 'em on flickr as CC-BY-SA
  • He could email permission - WP:DCM.
Hope this helps. Speak soon?  Chzz  ►  03:33, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
yea, thats one reason why I cant upload a picture of my because dad cant loose the copyright status as he used them to make a living and then have someone else do it as well (as cc-by-nc isnt allowed) - Sophie (Talk) 22:07, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's the reason. Wikipedia is free - for anyone to use, for any purpose. Therefore, we can only use 'free' pictures with the exception of the really complex 'fair use of non-free images' stuff, but that is best avoided.
By 'free', we mean any purpose - and yes, that includes commercial use, so we cannot use NC (non-commercial) licences. That is because we want other people to be able to put Wikipedia pages on their own websites. Some of those websites have adverts on the pages. Displaying copies of a wikipedia page on a website which has adverts counts as 'commercial use'.
The licence we use, most often, is CC-BY-SA. That means we give the 'attribution' - we say who the picture is by, ie the name of the copyright holder - and that anyone else who uses the picture must agree to the same conditions, ie share alike (SA).
Those are the only two conditions of licencing that we can accept - we'll give the author, and we'll insist any others using it must do the same.
However, we cannot use images with other conditions.
Bottom line...all pics need to be freely available for anyone to use. If the copyright-holder will not accept that, we cannot use them.  Chzz  ►  22:49, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
yea, makes sence :) but it doesnt answer why the exif data didnt show when there is a copyright right line and a hidden copyright line as well. Sophie (Talk) 13:42, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure; maybe you did not upload the actual original image (which would have EXIF data) - if you did, then the EXIF should display. However, that makes no difference at all to the actual copyright issue.  Chzz  ►  00:05, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh ok :) Iv been thinking actully about uploading a low res picture of me / me and brother / me and brother but no face visiable. As I can ask dad for the copyright :) Sophie (Talk) 00:51, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{pp-what?

{{adminhelp}} to which ever applies / knows more.

If you look in the protection log for my user page's history, you will see it says

[edit=autoconfirmed] (indefinite) [move=sysop] (indefinite)

Now, if i wanted to add a protection template onto the page, what would it the colour of the padlock be?

I am thinking that it would need 2 padlocks (one for the edit and one for the move) but iv not seen more than one padlock on a page at one time, so is it possiable?

Sophie (Talk) 13:51, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

One lock is usually on all articles once protected. No matter if moveprotected or not there is no additional symbol. Hope that is enough - I am not admin. Petrb (talk) 14:15, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ohh, thanks for the info, iv put ((adminhelp)) back just to make sure :) - Sophie (Talk) 20:51, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're looking for the list on WP:PP. Your page has been semiprotected, so you want the silver lock. {{pp-protected|small=yes}}. Just for clarification, the pp-protected template will determine what sort of protection your page has an pick the appropriate color, so you don't have to worry about it. And you don't need two locks; one is fine. — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 21:12, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

Hey Sophie, noticed your post to the ArbCom elections questions page. You should note that "Each eligible voter may ask a limit of one "individual" question" - you've asked several of the same candidate, which is not allowed. Would you mind removing the extra questions? Also, as a note you should not add to other people's questions - if you want to clarify further, feel free to use the talk page. Let me know if you have any questions about my message. Thanks, Nikkimaria (talk) 19:56, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, while I'm here...you might want to take a look at WP:SIG. Your sig is colourful, but I'm not sure it fits the guidelines...Nikkimaria (talk) 20:28, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved your second question to the discussion page. Nikkimaria (talk) 22:48, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, iv got to clear up my current one. - Sophie (Talk) 09:38, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template Alignment

Hi there, if you look at my userpage in edit mode, you will see on the 2nd to 4th lines

{{User:Sophie-iphone/sophie/infobox}}
{{user:sophie-iphone/sophie/friendly}}
{{user:sophie-iphone/sophie/altaccs}}

but in normal mode they are not aligned like that...why? - Sophie (Talk) 11:22, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Sophie, it's because the templates you use are set to align from the left to the right, so it starts with the first one on the left, then put's the next one to the first one's left, and so on. Hope that helps! -- DQ (t) (e) 13:22, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, so how do you get them to line up properly? - Sophie (Talk) 13:32, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You would put the one you want on the leftmost side first. DQ.alt (t) (e) 17:33, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But I would like them to be on the right.... - Sophie (Talk) 22:00, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey i have a question

What text-to-speech software do you use to record the spoken pages? Schoolstage (talk) 00:50, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2nd Speech Center :) althought it costs :( but with the trial, you only get a message line at the start (or end) of it which can be edited out. As for the copyright stuff on the output, see this page. If you do use it, feel free to use the same otrs template as me as its the same program :). All of the info for my spoken pages can be found here. Hope it helps :) - Sophie (Talk) 00:56, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's a free program called Speakonia which uses the same voice by default, plus Microsoft text-to-speech voices can be added to it for greater variety. Schoolstage (talk) 01:04, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, with IISC, get 35 different voices. :) - by the way, who is the pic of on your userpage? - Sophie (Talk) 01:11, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's one of the girls from Wikimedia Commons. Schoolstage (talk) 01:14, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
ah cool :) - Sophie (Talk) 01:18, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
