Paul Daley (born 21 February 1983) is an English professional mixed martial artist who has fought for EliteXC, Cage Rage, Strikeforce, Maximum Fighting Championship, Cage Warriors, Impact FC, Pancrase and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Daley is currently ranked the #10 best welterweight in the world by Sherdog[4] and the fifth best welterweight in the world by Yahoo! Sports.[5]

Mixed martial arts career

Paul was first introduced to martial arts when he began taking karate at the age of 8, Paul has developed into one of the top strikers in all of the United Kingdom. Primarily based in the UK, Daley has been known to hold portions of his training camp in the Netherlands, the number one producer of K-1 heavyweight champions and home to some of the world's most technical strikers. In addition to his training in Holland, Daley is also a member of Team Rough House.

Daley is the current Cage Rage welterweight champion.[6] Paul has had notable fights against Jake Shields for the EliteXC welterweight championship and UFC veteran John Alessio.

Daley was set to fight Jay Hieron at Affliction: Trilogy, but the bout was scrapped due to Affliction Entertainment folding.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

He later signed a four fight contract with the UFC, following Affliction's collapse.[7] Daley's first fight was scheduled to be on the preliminary card of UFC 103 against Brian Foster, which was due to air on ESPN UK, prior to the main card.[8] However, on 4 September, it was announced that Paul Daley had agreed to step in for Mike Swick, who suffered an injury during training and was unable to fight Martin Kampmann at UFC 103.

In his UFC debut, Daley put in an aggressive performance, defeating Kampmann via a first round stoppage due to strikes.[9]

Daley was expected to face Carlos Condit on 2 January 2010 at UFC 108.[10] However, Condit would be forced off the card after suffering a severe cut to his hand.[11] He was replaced by Dustin Hazelett.

After failing to make the stipulated 170 lb for the Hazelett fight, Daley was fined 10% of his fight purse.[12] The bout was fought at a catchweight of 172 lbs. Daley dropped Hazelett with a left hook, then followed up with additional punches on the ground to earn a 1st round knockout.

Welterweight contendership

At UFC 113, on May 8, 2010, Daley was placed to fight Josh Koscheck, with the winner destined to become the next challenger against Georges St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship and the opportunity to coach against St-Pierre on the twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter.[13]

At the end of the third and and final round, Koscheck turned his back to Daley to begin walking back to his corner when Daley threw a punch that Kosheck managed to block. In an interview at the conclusion of the event, Dana White announced that Daley would never fight in the UFC again. White was quoted as saying, "He'll never come back, I don't care if he's the best 170-pounder in the world. He's never coming back here. There's no excuse for that. You never hit a guy like that after the bell."[14]

Twenty-four hours after the incident at UFC 113, Paul Daley issued an official apology to the UFC and MMA fans around the World: "I would like to apologize to the UFC and the Athletic Commission for what I’ve done as well as all the fans and sponsors that support me. I would also like to offer my sincerest apologies to Josh Koscheck who did not deserve the cheap shot I threw." Daley was later given a 30 day suspension from the Quebec Athletic Commission.[15]

Post UFC

At an Impact Fighting Championships event in Sydney, Australia.[16] Speaking after his victory, Paul Daley revealed that he expects to sign with Strikeforce or DREAM "real soon."[17]

He then faced Jorge Masvidal at Shark Fights 13: Jardine vs. Prangley in September 2010, and won via unanimous decision. Before the fight, he weighed in Three quarters of a pound overweight and was forced to give up 10% of his "show purse".[18]

Strikeforce

Following his win over Masvidal, Daley signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce[19] and made his promotional debut against Scott Smith on December 4, 2010 at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu.[20] Smith charged forward as Daley connected with an overhand left hook, sending Smith unconscious face first into the canvas at 2:09 of round 1. In the post fight interview, he called out welterweight contender K.J. Noons.
