The Who concert chronology |
The Who Tour 1976 was The Who's second concert tour for their The Who By Numbers album.
History
This was the second straight year of touring the band did to support their latest album. However, only three tracks from the album were played during the tour: "Slip Kid", "Squeeze Box", and "Dreaming from the Waist". "Slip Kid" was dropped very early in the tour, only lasting until March 15, 1976.
This was also drummer Keith Moon's final tour, as the December 15, 1977 Kilburn concert and May 25, 1978 Shepperton concert weren't actually part of any tours, but rather special shows filmed specifically for inclusion in The Kids Are Alright film. This tour featured his final US concert, at the Seattle Center Coliseum in Seattle, WA on October 14, 1976, and his final concert before a paying crowd at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, ON on October 21, 1976.[1]
Band members

Typical set lists
First Europe/US Leg
This leg lasted from February 27, 1976 at the Hallenstadion in Zurich, Switzerland and ended on April 1, 1976 at the Boston Garden in Boston, MA. The four European concerts at the beginning of the tour acted as the warm-ups for the main US tour.
The US tour-opener on March 9, 1976 in Boston kicked off with a whimper, as drummer Keith Moon collapsed over his drumset after just two songs, "I Can't Explain" and "Substitute". Lead singer Roger Daltrey explained it on Keith being very sick, and he added, "Why do our tours always seem to start like this,"[2] possibly referring to the Cow Palace incident 3 years ago, where Moon also collapsed. This time however, no drummer or audience member filled in and the show was rescheduled to April 1, 1976, at the end of the tour. Here is a fairly typical set list for this leg of the tour. All songs written by Pete Townshend unless stated otherwise.

There were some set list substitutions, variations, and order switches during the tour. "Road Runner" also appeared in the regular set, and was dropped after a concert at the Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, CA on March 21, 1976. Also, one other song was played which is not in the above list:
- "You've Got Rock And Roll" (a.k.a. That's Rock And Roll)
- Performed on March 21st. This song was fleshed out more in the band's 1979 tour, as the song, "That's Rock And Roll".
