In the history of video games, the eighth generation or next generation of video game consoles is a term to describe unfinished projects by console manufacturers as yet unreleased as of 2011. It includes consoles by Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony such as; the Nintendo 3DS,[citation needed] PlayStation Vita,[citation needed] Playstation 4 and Xbox 720.[1] The first home console announced to be released in the eighth generation is Nintendo's Wii U in 2012.[2][3][4]
The next generation is unusual respect previous generations in that more than five years passed before manufacturers began to talk about the next one, and that the leading console in the previous generation was the first one to be replaced.[5]

Wii U
In November 2010, Nintendo America’s CEO, Reggie Fils-Aime, claimed that the release of the next generation of Nintendo will be determined by the continued success of the Wii.[6] Nintendo entered eighth generation with their successor to the Wii, the Wii U uses a console/handheld device. It is slated for release in 2012. The Wii U will take over from its predecessor.[4]
