"Not Like the Movies"
Song

"Not Like the Movies" is a song by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. The song was written by Perry for her third studio album, Teenage Dream, while production and additional writing was done by Greg Wells. It was released on August 3, 2010, by Capitol Records as the album's first promotional single. The pop ballad speaks about a love relationship where a woman doesn't feel in love and still waits for her "charming prince". It was written when Perry first started dating her husband, Russel Brand.

"Not Like the Movies" received positive reviews from music critics, with some calling it a powerful and lovely song, as well a contemplative ballad, but noticing the song's lyrics refers "very little" to Perry's husband, Russell Brand. "Not Like the Movies" achieved moderate success, peaking at number fifty-three on Billboard Hot 100 and at number forty-one in Canada. Perry performed the song on her California Dreams Tour, and at the 53rd Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011.

Background and composition

In an interview with YouTube about Teenage Dream, Perry revealed that "Not Like the Movies" was the first song she wrote for the album after she finished her Hello Katy Tour. Production and additional writing to song was done by Greg Wells, who previously worked with the singer on her second studio album, One of the Boys (2009).[1] The song was released on August 3, 2010 as the first promotional single from the album.[2] Perry performed the song on her California Dreams Tour,[3] and at the 53rd Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011.[4]

"Not Like the Movies" is a teen pop song[5] that lasts for four minutes and one second. The song is composed in the key of A major and is set in time signature of common time, with a moderate tempo of 100 beats per minute. Perry vocal range spans over an octave, from F3 to E5.[5] Lyrically, "Not Like the Movies" is a song about a love relationship where a woman doesn't feels in love and still waits for her "charming prince",[6] while it's melody was compared to Britney Spears' "Everytime" (2003).[7] The song has a basic sequence of A5–Fm7–Cm–E as its chord progression.[5]

Reception

Bill Lamb of About.com commented that "Not Like the Movies" is "another powerful song and this time slows things down for a contemplative ballad".[8] Chris Ryan of MTV said the song "rather lovely", but noted that the song's lyrics refers "very little" to Perry's husband, Russell Brand.[7] Rob Sheffied of Rolling Stone noticed that "when Katy Perry is flipping out in a ballad such as "Not Like the Movies," sobbing on the floor over her tragic love life, she's in a proud tradition of suburban girls who like their emotional meltdowns Hollywood-size."[9] After calling the song an "irresistible power ballad," Elysa Gardner of USA Today said the singer "holds out for a love that's 'cinematic and dramatic/With the perfect ending.'"[10]

On the week of August 11, 2010, "Not Like the Movies" debuted at number fifty-three on Billboard Hot 100,[11] and stayed on the chart for only one week. It also peaked at number forty-one in Canada and at number twenty-two on the Hot Digital Songs chart.[12]
