Alcorconazo is the name given to one of the 2009–10 Copa del Rey round of 32 eliminatories by the supporters and the Spanish sports press.[1] It receives this name because of the noisy and surprising Real Madrid defeat, one of the biggest teams in Spanish football, in front of a modest team which then played in Segunda División B (group II), such as AD Alcorcón.
This defeat was the top topic around the world, being the title page in English press[2], French press[3] or Italian press[4]. It also was the leap to fame for the Madrid suburbs' team, which could make a reform of its stadium in November.
The half-time substitution of Guti when the score was 3–0 and when he was booked before was another topic in the Spanish press because of the words said by the player to his coach, Manuel Pellegrini.[5]
It generated superstition and the number of the 4–0 day, the 27th October 2009, (27,109) was one of the best-selling lottery tickets on Christmas 2009.[6]
Both matches were broadcasted for the entire country on Canal +.
