Meaning/Derivation of name

Does anyone have reference for the derivation of the band's name. While it's certainly possible that it is a play on on "bon hiver", it could also be a play on "bon ivre", which means "good drunk".

Is there an official answer from the group, or did someone just assume? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.53.86.36 (talk) 21:14, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled

The record wasn't released on Amble Down originally. Kyle Frenette of Amble Down manages Bon Iver and helped promote the record pretty much right from the start but it wasn't ever released on the label.

^^ This is not true. It was released locally in the Eau Claire area in July 2007. I have a copy of this release. It was released under Amble Down but subsequently went to Jagjaguwar for larger distribution.

The song The Wolves (act 1 and 2) were also featured on that GA episode.

Tour Musicians

Should we mention the people who are on tour with him? I feel as if that is a part of what 'Bon Iver' is now, as the live show is pretty big now. And I'd like to know if the second guitarist who looks like he's sixteen is in fact sixteen. K1da42 (talk) 19:22, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mike is 21. 28 Sept 2008.

Here are some good sources added recently from Volume One, an Eau Claire area arts magazine, should anyone care to update this page.

As an editor at Crawdaddy!, and to comply with COI guidelines, I am not posting the link to this article comparing the making of Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago to Henry David Thoreau's Walden. However, I would like to recommend it on its merits, and hope that an editor will find the time to examine the article and—if he or she sees fit—post it to the external links section. I appreciate your time. Crawdaddy! [1]

Online Releases

Should the online releases of the Myspace Transmissions EP and the Daytrotter Session be included on this page?

They are both EP style releases put out for free online with 100% new recordings of songs off For Emma, Forever Ago - some of them are drastically different, being a whole band versus the solo work on the original album. Jkdeadite (talk) 04:40, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They are not official releases and should not be noted as such. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.196.151.154 (talk) 21:57, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Live Performances

I just have a slight uneasiness about the sentence: "Justin Vernon is joined live by Sean Carey (drums, vocals, piano, vibes) and Mike Noyce (vocals, baritone guitar, guitar)."

It sort of sounds like an advertisement, or a blurb on the back of a DVD or something. I almost expected it to continue with "...and presents an evening of magical Christmas favourites...". It doesn't sit well with the biographical nature of the rest of the article.

Perhaps the easiest fix would be to amend it to read: "In the band's current live show, Justin Vernon is joined by Sean Carey (drums, vocals, piano, vibes) and Mike Noyce (vocals, baritone guitar, guitar)."

I don't actually know much about Bon Iver (and hence am commenting rather than editing), but the style seemed unusual and perhaps not fitting with the Wikipedia goals. Anyone care to comment? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Imcintosh (talkcontribs) 06:56, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

infobox

why the use of a box designed for individual artist on a page which professes to be on the subject of the band bon ivor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.16.196.156 (talk) 14:42, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bon Iver is definitely a band now. Even if it started as a solo artist, at shows, Justin always says "We are Bon Iver." If you need an mp3 of him saying that, I can hook you up. He said so at the start of the NPR All Songs Considered performance.Jkdeadite (talk) 10:16, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Collections of Colonies of Bees

  • I heard something about Vernon being involved in some kind of side-project (maybe a one-off?) of this name. Can anyone substantiate this? If so, is it worthy of mention here, given that Vernon's name redirects here anyway?--Hraefen Talk 03:49, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • As a followup: this site says that Bon Iver and Collections of Colonies of Bees were going to release (did release?) a "brand new collaboration" in late 2008. Does anyone know if this happened and if it is available anywhere?--Hraefen Talk 00:45, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

TV spots

I don't really think that one off plays of a song on a TV series are that notable, especially when we are considering Bon Iver as a whole. It's pretty minor information and unless it can be proved to be of significant importance (e.g. directly resulted in mainstream success etc) then it's only suitable for the talk page or perhaps the song articles if possible. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 07:24, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Skinny Love" was also featured at the end of an episode of Chuck on October 13, 2008. His song "Blood Bank" would later be featured on the ending scene of the March 23rd episode. Bon Iver's track "The Wolves (Act I and II)" was featured in season 4 of Grey's Anatomy on May 15, 2008 in the episode "Losing My Mind," later, "Skinny Love" was used in the series' season 5 premier, and most recently, "Re: Stacks" was used in the episode "Beat Your Heart Out" on February 5, 2009.<"ref>HipsterWave.com entry</ref"> The track "Re: Stacks" was also played during the season 4 finale "Wilson's Heart" of the TV show House M.D. on May 19, 2008. On September 8, 2008, Bon Iver made their debut performance on national TV with the track "Flume" as guests on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien". Flume and Blindsided were featured on One Tree Hill's episode "What Comes After the Blues," which was aired on May 15, 2008. Flume was featured in the UK teen drama series Skins on episode seven of series three, which aired on 5th March, 2009. Woods was also featured in the following week's episode. On the March 8, 2009, "Wolves (Act I and II)" was featured in the United States of Tara episode titled "Abundance". On March 30, 2009, the track "Blood Bank" was featured on episode 2.18 of NBC's Chuck.

Auto Tune?

I know this is probably going to sound crazy, but it sounds to me very much like Vernon is using Auto Tune on his voice on at least a few songs ("The Wolves" for instance) on "For Emma". Anybody know anything about this? It's so peculiar for this genre that if it's true it might rate inclusion in the article. Buck Mulligan (talk) 22:53, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vocoder —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.83.45.165 (talk) 10:38, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The effect was achieved by him laying multiple tracks of his voice over each other and singing in a slightly discordant manner. I think I saw somewhere there were like ten tracks of just his voice but I can't remember the actual number... no auto tune though. 121.217.150.220 (talk) 22:38, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Justin Vernon?

Why am I redirected to Bon Iver from Justin Vernon?

Just fyi, Justin Vernon is separate from Bon Iver, and Mr. Vernon has released music under hia name. Perhaps there should be one biographical page about Justin Vernon, and within the article discuss Bon Iver and his latest project, Volcano Choir. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.160.150.35 (talk) 03:33, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Correct album title for June 2011 release?

Vernon's label, Jagjaguwar, is now listing the title of the new album as "Bon Iver, Bon Iver" on Bon Iver's website. I'm not changing it yet because there's an essay by Michael Perry in two places of the website, once on the main page for the album and once in a blog entry, and italicizing differs between the two regarding the title. Still, the essay only makes sense if the correct title is "Bon Iver, Bon Iver," and, as I said, it's very clearly listed as such on that page in a manner one simply can't argue against. Here's the page: http://jagjaguwar.com/onesheet.php?cat=JAG135 . The novelty of this information is still keeping me from changing it, but somebody else might see if they can cross-reference this info with other sources. 98.223.71.136 (talk) 08:09, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In this interview (http://pitchfork.com/features/interviews/7989-bon-iver/) with Pitchfork, Justin Vernon himself seems to settle the confusion that the title of the album is indeed "Bon Iver, Bon Iver". 46.239.122.131 (talk) 11:01, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The correct title is beyond a shadow of a doubt Bon Iver, Bon Iver. They themselves use Bon Iver, Bon Iver. They said on Twitter they do not care which one people use, but Bon Iver, Bon Iver is definitely the correct title. It should be changed. --Our Lady Overkill (talk) 11:36, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The correct title is "Bon Iver", without a shadow of doubt. Justlaugh (talk) 12:48, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is right, the correct title is 'Bon Iver', as they just insert a comma in between the eponymous title and the band name. So, technically the album should be just 'Bon Iver' and the album page should be Bon Iver (album). Snoop God (talk) 10:25, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And, with the album charting in the US, it is credited as Bon Iver on billboard.com, not Bon Iver, Bon Iver. EnDaLeCoMpLeX (contributions) • (let's chat) 14:59, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The 4AD website here clearly calls it Bon Iver, Bon Iver. There isn't really any question that this isn't its title, so can people stop changing it please.--Michig (talk) 08:07, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The link you are using is lifted from the original press release, which as discussed many times on both album and artist discussion pages, was fairly ambiguous, and Vernon himself stated that they wanted to do something different by adding the comma "as a slant". But also this link that you are using to cite the correct title has seven separate references calling it 'Bon Iver'. Also, the 4AD cat number (the most definitive source, surely) calls it Bon Iver! 92.40.84.123 (talk) 10:45, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
4AD clearly states the title as Bon Iver, Bon Iver, as does his US label, and the artist has stated that the album's title is Bon Iver, Bon Iver ("press materials and retail outlets refer to the album as Bon Iver, but Vernon has indicated that the title is Bon Iver, Bon Iver."). What more do you need?--Michig (talk) 11:06, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If think, we respect, you fail to grasp the concept, which is why the press, publishing, retail, all call it 'Bon Iver'. If the title was Bon Iver, Bon Iver, they would call it Bon Iver, Bon Iver - Bon Iver. To be definitive, you surely have to differ to the music writers and publications who call it Bon Iver, as they really should know how to format it. 92.40.84.123 (talk) 11:19, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
