Kenmore East High School (also Kenmore East Senior High School) is a high school in the Town of Tonawanda, New York. Its name refers to the Village of Kenmore, which it serves. The school's mascot is a bulldog. The school was founded in 1959 and is the sister school to Kenmore West Senior High School. The two schools are each other's main rivals and the annual East-West varsity football contest is the highlight of the fall sports season. The school is run by principal Patrick Heyden, with Carmelina Persico and Jimmy D. as assistants.

Overview

Kenmore East is located in the heart of the Town of Tonawanda, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. It is one of the two high schools within the Ken-Ton School District with traditional rival high school Kenmore West being the other. Student enrollment varies from year to year with the average population of the school ranging from 1100-1300 people (students and staff) on any given school day.[citation needed] Kenmore East has been named a national "School of Excellence" in past years due to high performing students and faculty.[citation needed] Recently the school has been plagued by controversy and the district leadership and current faculty are making active strides to return the school to its previously respected status as a local leader in public education.[citation needed]

Academics

In 2009, Kenmore East High School was ranked 70th out of 131 Western New York high schools in terms of academic performance.[1]

Graduation Requirements

The school follows the State recommended curriculum, as may be seen below. Minimum 3 Science credits: Earth Science (freshman year), Biology (sophomore year), Chemistry (junior year). Students have an opportunity to take the above classes in a different order or substitute them with AP courses, Oceanography and Astronomy, Physics, or Anatomy.

4 Social Studies Credits: Global History (Freshman year), Global History and Geography (Sophomore year), U.S. History (Junior Year), and Government and Economics (Senior year). AP courses are also offered, with AP European History open to sophomores.

Minimum three math credits. The math courses are numbered by year (freshman year math is math 1, sophomore year is math 2, and so on) and a letter. "A" indicates the most simplified version of the course and "H" indicates honors. Statistics, Calculus, and other courses such as business math are also offered.

4 English Credits: English is required every year and AP courses are offered in this field (as with all).

Languages: Kenmore East has the three basic languages: French, Spanish, and German.

Other required credits include Health, Physical Education, and Music or Visual Arts.

Athletics

Kenmore East boasts a tremendous athletic department that includes many sports. Kenmore East features 4 different competitive levels of play - freshman, junior varsity, varsity, and club sports. Their mascot is a bulldog with the school colors of navy blue and gold. Kenmore East's main rivals are the cross-town Kenmore West Blue Devils. The school's two biggest games of the year in any sport are the Homecoming game(which is played after a school wide pep rally and parade), and the historic Kenmore East-Kenmore West rivalry match-ups.

Kenmore East Varsity Bulldogs Football

The Kenmore East Varsity program was established in 1959. Their all time record is 164-254-13. The team plays at Dick "Sparky" Adams Field, named in honor of the most successful head coach in school history with a record of 79-26-5 from the span of 1964-1977. The field's press box (as of 9/24/11 presented with a pre-game ceremony vs. North Tonawanda) is named after Lou Reuter, the most successful coach in junior varsity history. "Sweet Lou" passed away in 2009.

The team's current Varsity coaching staff consists of Alex Perry (Defensive Coordinator), Keith Brophy (Offensive coordinator), and Head Coach Matt Chimera, who since 2000 has posted a record of 32-73. The Junior Varsity Head Coaches are Dennis Danheiser and Jeff Martin, along with assistant coach and former player Ryan McGowan.

Chimera's most successful seasons were in 2000, when the Bulldogs finished 7-2 and in 2001 when the Bulldogs finished 5-4 and won the Class AA North Championship.

Other Sports

The 2008-2009 school year was one of the most overall successful years in the school's athletic history. Both the boys varsity soccer and ice hockey teams competed for state championships. The highest ranking achieved at any point in the season was #2 in the New York Federation in hockey, and #1 in the Class A division for soccer.

The school is home to a wide variety of clubs and sports. There are clubs for all passions, from Anime to Wilderness. Featured sports are typical of any other, with a recent addition of Rugby for both females and males.

Other Clubs

The school offers typical music groups like Chorale, Women's Choir, Select Choir (AKA Company of Song), Orchestra, Band, and Jazz Band. Other non-musical clubs include Art Club, Booster Club, Drama Club, Bible Club, Games Club, Library Club, Mock Trial, Model United Nations, National Honor Society (NHS), Ping-Pong, Race Unity Club,Web Club, and Wilderness Club, among others. The Eastonian is the school's newspaper and is written by students who wish to take the class. Heather Wulf and Susan Grabenstatter advise the class.
