Arcadia High School is a part of the Arcadia Unified School District and is a four-year comprehensive secondary school located on a 40-acre (160,000 m2) site in Arcadia, California.

The high school was first opened in 1952. The ninth grade was added to Arcadia High School in 1994. The incoming freshman classes consist of students that feed in from Arcadia’s three middle schools: First Avenue Middle School, Richard Henry Dana Middle School, Foothills Middle School.[1]

Students at AHS are held to a very high standard, and the students are expected to excel at a competitive level academically over the other public high schools in the state of California, and Nationally. It is among the few public high schools in California to receive a distinguished GreatSchools Rating of 10 out of 10.[2] In 2010, BusinessWeek ranked Arcadia as the best place to raise children in the state of California for the second year in a row by, citing the city's school system as one of the factors, and because of its low crime and excellent schools.[3]

Arcadia High School has a teaching staff of 155. Six hold doctorate degrees and 82 have masters degrees.[4] The administrative staff consists of the principal, four assistant principals, and two deans of students. A staff of seven counselors hold masters degrees and Pupil Personnel Service Credentials, with three of the counselors licensed Marriage/Family/Child Counselors.[4] Arcadia High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and received another six-year accreditation in June 2010.[5]

New law

California Immunization Law requires all students 7th - 12th grade to show proof of having received the TdaP vaccine (whooping cough booster shot) on or after their 10th birthday, before starting school in August 2011. This law is mandatory and no school registration or school attendance will be allowed without Tdap documentation.[6]

History

Arcadia was originally a part of the Spanish Empire and part of a 21-square-mile (54 km2) area called Rancho Santa Anita.[7] In 1845, Hugo Reid, a pioneer from Scotland, bought Rancho Santa Anita from Governor Pio Pico.[8] Through the years, several early settlers occupied Rancho Santa Anita. In 1875, Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin bought the land. The city of Arcadia's destiny was entwined with the fortunes of Baldwin, who expanded his property holdings to 63,000 acres (255 km2) acres in the San Gabriel Valley. Baldwin went on to oversee Arcadia's incorporation in 1903 and became the city's first mayor. The Arcadia School District came to be at the same time as the incorporation of Arcadia in 1903.[8]

In 1950, the high school students of Arcadia, Duarte, and Monrovia all attended the same high school, "Monrovia Arcadia Duarte High School", more often called "MAD High". In 1951, with a fast growing population, a bond measure that called for the construction on a new high school in Arcadia was proposed. After its passage, workers began construction and Arcadia High welcomed its first freshman and sophomore classes in September 1952. However, many students had to attend their first year of high school at First Avenue, the oldest school in Arcadia, erected in 1903. The new buildings were built in the next two years and by the 1954 school year, all high school students in Arcadia were together at Arcadia High.[8]

About 1975, the closed-campus policy and the dress code were discontinued. Much of the change was brought about by the U.S. Supreme Court decision that stated, “A student doesn’t shed his rights at the school house door.” That year the student population of Arcadia High reached it highest population at about 3,300 students.[8] For the first time, students also were granted representation on the School Board. They had the right to elect a representative to attend School Board meetings and speak for the student body. The Student Council presided over most of the student body budget.[8]

In the 1980s, enrollment had decreased considerably to about 2,200 students, largely due to the aging demographic in Arcadia. Since then, enrollment has rapidly increased. In the 1990s, the demographics of the school dramatically changed.[8]

Notably, curriculum has also changed. Many subjects now taken in high school were formerly college level work. Junior high students are now accomplishing what was high school level work. Students are generally more mature and more knowledgeable of the world around them than they were decades earlier. By 1975, calculators and computers entered the classroom and were there to stay. Due to this and the widespread invasion of the media, the methods of presenting information to students has completely changed.[8]

Arcadia High has enjoyed its share of awards and recognition through the years. The Apache Marching Band has won more than 30 major championships and has marched in the Tournament of Roses Parade fourteen times. AHS athletics are among the best in Southern California in all sports for boys and girls on all levels. Most importantly, Arcadia High ranks, scholastically, in the 99th percentile of all California high schools.[8]

Arcadia United School District has compiled a comprehensive discipline procedures clearly covering all areas of high school student behaviors.[9]

Controversy

In the late 1990s, Native American activists threatened to sue Arcadia High School over its use of the "Apache" mascot. The high school's use of Native American symbols, including an "Apache Joe" mascot, the Pow Wow school newspaper, the "Apache News" television program, the "Smoke Signals" news bulletin boards, the school's auxiliary team's marching "Apache Princesses" and opposing football team fans' "Scalp the Apaches" signs were viewed by these Native American activists and many Arcadia community members as being "offensive". The school consulted with Native American groups and made some concessions but did not change the mascot. Some residents of Arcadia, who are former students at the school and have Native American ancestry, do not take offense to the school's use of these symbols. Arcadia High School has established a relationship with the White Mountain Apaches and sponsors an annual charity drive to aid them.[citation needed] Most Alumni do not see any point to the controversy.

The team remained undefeated the entire season and broke the California state record. Arcadia senior cross country star Ammar Moussa was named the Gatorade boys' cross country runner of the year in California for a second-straight year in 2011. As defending state champions in 2011, Arcadia came up short of back-to-back state championships where they placed 2nd. They were led by individual state champion Sergio Gonzalez.[11]

The Boys Track team has also been successful from 2005, winning over 90% of its meets and 3 league championships in a row, (2005–07).In 2009, Arcadia track became the first team in the Pacific League to be undefeated on every level. Construction

A $218 million bond measure was passed on the November 7, 2006 election ballot for the purpose of upgrading and repairing our schools. A large part of local property taxes are absorbed by the state, and Arcadia is the lowest funded unified school district in Los Angeles County.[28] A Student Service Center, which provides a "front door" to the high School on Campus Drive. A new Science Center and Student Service Center. The two story structure includes general and special education classrooms, three computer labs, television studio, graphic design and digital photography classrooms, and the high school’s career center and health, counseling and administrative offices. The brick and glass exterior finish visibly blends with other elements of the campus. Ground was broken in the summer of 2008.[28]

The Science Center is to be located on the south side of the campus on Duarte Road. The two-story center includes chemistry labs with preparation areas and collegiate designed biology and physics classrooms separated by lecture rooms.[28]

The 40,000-square-foot (3,700 m2) Arcadia High School Performing Arts Center will anchor the campus at the northwest corner. The center will have ground level and mezzanine seating for 1200, the stage will accommodate 150 musicians and the facility will have state-of-the-art acoustics. The building will contain a small theater, orchestra and dance rooms and an internal courtyard. The Performing Arts Center construction began in 2010. [28] The "world class" facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012. "This will be the first venue of its kind for the district and the community," said district Superintendent Joel Shawn.[29]
