Up All Night is the debut studio album by British-Irish boy band One Direction. The album was released 18 November, 2011 in Ireland and 21 November, 2011 in the United Kingdom through Sony Music. The album is set for release in North America 13 March, 2012 through Columbia Records. The thirteen-song set (fifteen on the deluxe edition) features One Direction collaborating with Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, RedOne, Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Toby Gad and Carl Falk. One Direction began recording the album after the seventh series final of The X Factor in early 2011. The album marks the first full length release of the boyband since coming third on seventh series of The X Factor and being signed to Syco Records.

The record is predominantly a pop rock and pop music album, with several music critics noting the dance-pop themes. The album's lyrical content mainly explores themes about having fun, being young, relationships, heartbreak and empowerment. Band member Zayn Malik referred to the album as being "anthemic" calling the sound "powerful". The album received generally positive reviews from contemporary critics, commending the albums's carefree, youthful lyrics and pop sensibility.

Up All Night debuted at number two in the UK, selling 138,163 copies, the highest sales for a number two album, and became the fastest-selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart of 2011. The album topped the chart in Sweden and Italy and reached top ten positions in twelve other countries. As of year end the album had shifted 468,000 copies to become the third biggest-selling debut album and the sixteenth biggest-selling album in the UK, within the albums first five weeks of release. Worldwide the album sold 800,000 copies in the first two months of release.[2]

The album's release was preceded by lead single "What Makes You Beautiful", released 11 September, 2011. The single topped the Irish Singles Chart for four consecutive weeks and topped the Scottish and the UK Singles Charts after breaking pre-order records for Sony Music Entertainment. Singles "Gotta Be You" and "One Thing" were released in November 2011 and January 2012 respectively, both becoming top ten singles in Ireland and the UK.

"What Makes You Beautiful" won the Best British Single award at the 2012 BRIT Awards, which was held on 21 February 2012.[3]

Background and development

Pop music critics Trash Lounge awarded the album four out of five stars, comparing the band favourably to other all-male groups, "Strip away the commercial cynicism and, thanks to some of the world’s best pop producers, this is a record that teaches obvious rivals JLS and The Wanted a lesson or two about throwing serious-faced-boybandism to the wind and just having some bloody fun." Cosmopolitan's Sophie Goddard, in a positive review, praised the album for a collection of "toe-tappers that are just impossible to dislike". Digital Spy's Robert Copsey awarded the album four out of five stars. Prasing the album "for a collection of pg pop rock with killer choruses." In his review he also went on to praise songs "More Than This" and "Taken" stating "even more surprising their ability to carry off a sizeable ballad", adding "best ballads to come out of boyband land in recent years" and ultimately stating "an adorable as expected debut with a surprising amount of bite". The Independent gave the album two out of five stars, commenting on the album, "the album consists of fifteen instalments of inoffensive daytime radio pop, of which half the songs sound like "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys, the other half like "Free Fallin" by Tom Petty. Ultimately stating, "it will sell by the zillion."

Daily Star's John Earls awarded the album a (8/10) rating. Stating an album "that doesn't take the easy route", commending the album for "big personalities" and "belting fun pop anthems". Further stating that song "Stole My Heart" was "the only misstep, which only reinforces their decision to go pop rock." Allmusic's Matthew Chisling gave the album three and a half stars out of five, commended the album for it's appeal to teen audience, "limitless potential for the time being, this is a perfectly sized, and targeted, collection." MSN Music's Ben Chalk gave the album a (4/5) rating. He called the album manufactured, calculated, commercial and went on to saying it doesn't matter, stating "the result is a corking pop album". In his review he also commended the album for it's collection of singles, saying "Up All Night is a collection of highly polished pop gems, which knows it's market and gives it what it wants".
