Angela Sun (born 19 October 1982[1]) is an American journalist, television presenter, sportscaster, and documentary filmmaker. A correspondent for American Ninja Warrior, Sun is also host of Yahoo Sports Minute and anchors Court Reports on The Tennis Channel.
Biography
Born and raised in Northern California, of Chinese descent, Sun is an alumna of UCLA where she earned her degrees in Sociology and Communications. In high school and college, Sun competed in pro/am surf events and was a team rider for Loaded Skateboards. Angela's action sports background led to hosting for EXTV, LG Action Sports Championships and ASP Surfing World Tour. She was sponsored by Roxy, Reef, Oakley, Billabong, Rip Curl, and Vans.
In 2003 Sun was hired as correspondent for Fox Sports Net's 54321.[2] She went on to report for FSN West's Dig! Volleyball Magazine show.
ESPN hired Sun as a correspondent for X Center for Summer X Games 11. She also reported for The Winter X Games as the New Media correspondent for ESPN.com.
In the summer of 2005 Sun left to shoot a 3 part documentary series for Current TV about Underground Christian Missionaries in China that would win her a Telly Award.
Upon return, Sun took to the red carpets and celebrity events as correspondent for ESPN Hollywood. The show was canceled after a short-lived run on ESPN2.
In 2006 Sun joined Current TV, hosting in-studio and producing and reporting in the field. Her work has taken her around the globe, including places like China, Guatemala, Australia, Philippines, Germany.
Sun was a correspondent for The CW's new show, The CW Now pilot.
Angela appears opposite Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker in the 2008 film, Street Kings.
In 2008 Sun joined luxury lifestyle news magazine, LXTV First Look airing nationally on NBC In 2011 she was nominated for an Emmy award for her work on 1st Look.[3]
In addition to LXTV, Sun hosted the show InnerView as well as MTV Iggy on the newly launched global channel of MTV networks.
In 2009 Angela became an anchor for "The Court Report" on The Tennis Channel.[4]
Currently, Sun hosts "The Yahoo Sports Minute".[5] She took this over from former host Ashley Russell and covered the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver for Yahoo! Sports. The Yahoo Sports Minute went on to win a 2010 Webby Award and a 2012 Bronze Telly Award. The show has recorded over 200 million streams since its debut and averages over 7 million views per month.
Sun has also hosted special online projects for ESPN international and Samsung as well as "Inside AlliSports" for the AlliSports network and "The Arena" for the newly launched DS2DIO dance lifestyle channel.
Angela joins co-hosts Matt Iseman and Olympic Gold Medalist Jonny Moseley for the 4th season of American Ninja Warrior on G4TV and NBC for Summer 2012.[6][7]
Sun is currently directing and producing her first feature-length documentary, "Plastic Paradise: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch" examining the plastic pollution in our oceans and its effects on the environment, marine life, and ultimately humans.[8][9][10] The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a huge collection of trash trapped in a gyre in the Pacific Ocean. It was discovered by Charles J. Moore in 1997 and most recently explored by Algalita/5 Gyres and Sea Education Association expeditions.
She was the first Asian-American Female on-camera personality to appear on ESPN, Fox Sports, Tennis Channel, and Yahoo Sports.[11]
Angela speaks English,Spanish, and some German and Mandarin.
She has traveled to over 40 countries and studied abroad in Australia at the University of New South Wales. Angela is a contributing travel writer for wandermelon.com
