The Picture

  • As I can see, the picture representing SketchUp right now is a creation by Zooobala, who, I believe, is also the creator of the website "A Student Project of Downtown" which is listed in the External Links section. With all due respect, I think the existing picture cannot be used for such a purpose; it should be a more "general" one, one that is preferably official rather than belonging to an individual.I also think that the "A Student Project of Downtown" link should be removed from the External Links section since it is a personal website. I am not that familiar with the principles of External Links section but it seems wrong.

If there is no objection, I will make the appropriate changes.Farukahmet 22:37, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed - I believe that the whole first two sections need rewriting to properly reflect the current situation, i.e. SU being owned by Google. --jazzle 21:38, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the picture should be a house or building, it is an Architecture program, so not the car pictures, but building pictures too. (Thin Smek 21:40, 14 June 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Steep learning curve

Since I'm not a native english speaker, I am not aware of the everyday conception of this term, but logically, a 'steep learning curve' should mean that something is easy to learn. This is also mentioned in the entry Experience_curve_effects. So the sentence "It was designed to be more intuitive, flexible, and easy-to-use than other 3D modelling programs, which often have steep learning curves." might be confusing.

English idiomatic usage (which may or may not be a misnomer) of "steep learning curve" means "hard to learn." - Talyian 09:07, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
From article Learning curve: "steep learning curve" is used in two opposite contexts. Originally it referred to quick progress in learning during the initial stages followed by gradually lesser improvements with further practice.
...
Over time, the misapprehension has emerged that a "steep" learning curve means that something requires much effort to learn because of the natural association of the word "steep" with a slope which is difficult to climb.88.195.119.17 (talk) 01:34, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The term no longer appears on the page, so why is this discussion still here? If it should still be here, it should be clearly marked as just a historical record, a rationale.

Why did it get moved?

I know there is a new version, but is this article going to move every time there is a new version. No other application does that. I think we should move it back. Behun 18:58, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think article should be named Google SketchUp and have redirect from SketchUp. Garas 20:03, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should be called SketchUp and have redirect from Google Sketchup. Google is the brand. The name of the product iss just SketchUp. Dajavax 00:08, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Make Sure

Please make sure you leave this move because there is a new version. Thank you! — This message is issued from Loop 101 Dead!. If you have any questions, send it to my talk page. 03:43, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SuWiki section?

The wiki deserves a mention in the "Users" section and an external link, but I don't think it should have its own section in the article. It kind of comes off as a bit of an advertisement. Thoughts? Tozoku 00:35, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... But an advertisement for what? I free, open site where people can post whatever they want to add to the SketchUp user community? ADH 04:21, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good point ^^; Perhaps it could be integrated into the Users section, though? Tozoku 02:10, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK - I combined them and added some similar links (Google Groups, SketchUp Plugins page, etc.)ADH 04:43, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bypassing the license restrictions

Hi, The latest free version of SketchUp from Google has a 8-hour trial period which can be by-passed by (instructions removed) Resetting the clock to the normal time after restarting the computer will complete the installation and allow the user to use SketchUp until the date set prior to installation (year 2020).

is not really what I would put on an /Encyclopedy/. What's the point except breaking license laws by technical means ?
ChloeD 04:46, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Right! Per WP:NOT#HOWTO, Wikipedia should not contain "how-to"s. Rjgodoy 05:26, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the instructions on how to bypass the copy protection. ADH 15:56, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Aurora-rye.jpg

Image:Aurora-rye.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:05, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV tag

This article reads like an advertisement for the program. There is a fine line between objective description and PR; and this article reads like PR. Pete Fenelon (talk) 23:46, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be specific. I'm new to the discussion, but the article doesn't seem to read like an ad to me. I don't see weasel words or peackock terms. But I could be wrong about this. Maybe the overal tone is too gentle? If you elaborated it would help. Could the article have criticism, probably. 842U (talk) 13:17, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Fenelon, under "SketchUp Pro for Education," for example, we have the segment "With free licenses for faculty and significant discounts for students and labs, SketchUp Pro is easy to afford" which is obviously opinion and biased.Bentonetc (talk) 00:33, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed "SketchUp Pro is easy to afford" from the article. --duncan.lithgow (talk) 08:39, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Supported platforms/OS?

The entry could be improved by going into detail about platforms and OS supported by SketchUp, and which ones aren't yet supported. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Parallelized (talkcontribs) 22:55, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since SketchUp7, Windows 2000 is no longer supported, although in the block of technical info this operating system continues listed as supported. 189.7.79.51 (talk) 09:35, 7 September 2010
Okay. I've checked the system requirements for SketchUp and have adjusted the list. SCΛRECROW 11:37, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Push Pull patent?!

this tool is called 'extrude' and most modellers have it. can they seriously patent the merging of 'poly select' and 'extrude' into one click?

good as the package is (ok so they merge extrude with csg subtract..) please tell me this patent application isn't being taken seriously!! you could probably script somtheing in another package to do this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.243.160 (talk) 13:43, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is the first point.3Dstudio(not max) was using it back in `93.
Another one: since when google loves patents? I thought it supports FOSS and GNU.
And the last: license states its free? Why did i saw different thing (331€) on the site? Shouldn`t it be GPL?? If no, please STOP using GPL software on your servers.
Three thumbs down google.ShinobiTeno (talk) 20:24, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Google didn't create SketchUp or patent "pushpull", you misread the article.
Notice the dates. --Tehdrago (talk) 09:57, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
On another note, I might be missing something, but shouldn't the article read "@Last Software holds a patent (U.S. Patent 6,628,279) on SketchUp's Push/Pull technology" rather then "SketchUp holds a Patent U.S. Patent 6,628,279 on its Push/Pull technology"? "@Last Software" was listed on the patent as the assignee. --Tehdrago (talk) 09:57, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I may be missing something, so I didn't change it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.229.230.131 (talk) 20:36, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Intergraph SmartSketch & SketchUp

Can someone respond on the following:

Is Google SketchUp was based on ideas of famous Intergraph SmartSketch?

And how much was taken from Intergraph SmartSketch? --= APh =-- 03:12, 28 October 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by APh (talkcontribs)
