Current season

Global Football Club is a professional Filipino association football club originally formed in March 2000.[1] It competes in the country's premier soccer competition, the United Football League, every year, they are also competing in the United Football League Cup, Global made one appearance in the AFC President's Cup and Singapore Cup respectively.[2][3] They marked their debut in the first season of the league, which promoted them to Division 1. They are the 2012 Division 1 champions, as well one time National Men's Club Champion and winners of the 2010 UFL Cup.

Aside from the UFL and the PFF Men's Club Championships, Global has also participated in several tournaments like the Alaska Cup, Kia Cup and Ang Liga.[4]

History

Foundation

The club is based in the Philippines and participates in the UFL. The club is named after the company Autre Porte Technique Global, Inc. The group, which was mostly composed of football enthusiasts from Tacloban, held their first games at the back of the Quezon City Hall. They later moved to continue their weekly games in the University of the Philippine Diliman's Sunken Garden football field. The group started participating in different tournaments in Manila using the name “Laos F.C.”. After hiring football players as employees of Autre Porte Technique Global, Inc, the club name of ‘Global Football Club’ was adopted in 2009.[4][1]

Early years (2010–2012)

The team started in Division 2 of the United Football League inaugural season. On that same season, the team managed to finish top of the Second Division with an unbeaten record. As a result, the team was automatically promoted to United Football League Division 1 on the following season.[4]

Global won the 2010 UFL Cup and was on the brink of winning the 2011 United Football League season title but eventually defeated by the 2009 UFL Cup champions and 2010 United Football League season champions Philippine Air Force in the 2011 United Football League season finale.

After the club suffered from a surprise 1–2 loss to Stallion FC in 2011 UFL Cup, Dan Palami gave to Graeme Mackinnon the job to coach Global.[5] Mackinnon debut game for Global against Cebu Queen City United is a 3–0 victory.[6]

Citing some family concerns, the 65-year-old coach who took Global to the semifinals of the UFL Cup and to second place after six games in the league resigned. Since the club will have a short break, Dan Palami said he will use the time to find a coach similar to Mackinnon's performance.[7]

Global won their first league title on goal difference against runners-up Kaya, after a 1–1 draw with third-placers Loyola Meralco Sparks on 26 June 2012.[8]

2013–present

The club is qualified for the 2013 AFC President's Cup after winning the 2012 season, the first Filipino football club to do so.[9][10] The club also tapped the service of Scottish Brian Reid as their new manager for the 2013 season also as a preparation for their participation in the 2013 AFC President's Cup.[11]

Their first match is against Yeedzin from Bhutan, the games were held in Cebu City. The match ended in a 5-0 win against the away squad which makes Global top in Group B after the first matches.[12] In the second match, Global experienced their first loss in the tournament against KRL a team from Pakistan, in a 0-2 defeat.[13] In their final match, Global faced Dordoi Bishkek from Kyrgyzstan, on hoping the team to bounce back after their defeat but unfortunately the opponents are too strong and ended in a 1-6 loss[14] because of the results, Global failed to qualify to the final stages of the AFC President's Cup.

Last April 2013, Global invited to play in the 2013 Singapore Cup as a guest club together with fellow UFL side Loyola.[15] Their first match in the competition are against Warriors F.C., [16] which clinched a 2-0 victory over the current champions.[17] They advanced to the quarterfinals, and defeated Brunei DPMM by an aggregrate score of 5-4, [18][19] because of that, they are the first Filipino football club to reach the semifinals in the tournament, they will face Tanjong Pagar in an unknown date.
