Seitokai Yakuindomo (生徒会役員共, lit. Student Council Staff Members) is a shōnen four-panel comic strip manga series written and illustrated by Tozen Ujiie. The series began serialization in the June 2007 issue of Kodansha's Magazine Special and ran in that magazine until the July 2008 issue, where it was thereafter transferred to Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in September 2008, and has been running there since. Chapters are collected and published in collected volumes by Kodansha, with nine volumes released as of October 2013 in Japan. A 13-episode anime adaptation produced by GoHands aired in Japan on TV Kanagawa between July 4 and September 26, 2010. A second television anime season will debut in January 2014.

Plot

Takatoshi Tsuda attends Ōsai Academy, a high school that has been an all-girl school, until due to declining birth rates, has been converted to a co-ed school.[n 1] On his first day, he is forcibly recruited to join the student council as vice-president and a male representative. The story follows Tsuda and the student council as they interact with each other and their schoolmates.

Characters

Takatoshi Tsuda

Takatoshi Tsuda (津田 タカトシ, Tsuda Takatoshi) is the main character of the story, he chooses to attend a former all-girl school simply because it is close to his home.[ch. p1] On his first day at the school, he is forcibly recruited into the student council as the vice president and male representative.[ch. p1] He normally acts as the straight-man to Shino and Aria, who, along with other girls in the school, regularly make perverted comments and sexual innuendos; he becomes so used to it that he would actually feel odd if they did not make such jokes.[2][3] He is voiced by Shintaro Asanuma.[4]

Shino Amakusa

Shino Amakusa (天草 シノ, Amakusa Shino) is introduced in the story as a second-year student and the student council president.[ch. p1] She is serious and diligent, excels in academics, and is very popular among the student body.[ch. p2,p3] However, she is almost always thinking of perverted things. She suggests that one of her original reasons she shows interest in Takatoshi is so she can observe him in health and physical education classes.[ch. p1] She fears heights[ch. p2,p10] and insects,[ch. 2] and her rather flat chest makes her feel self-conscious,[ch. p10] especially when comparing herself to Aria.[ch. p13] She is occasionally shown doing couple-like activities with Takatoshi such as walking with him, sharing an umbrella or clearing his earwax, but gets embarrassed whenever Takatoshi says something to her that could be interpreted as romantic.[5] According to her childhood friend Misaki Amano (天野 ミサキ, Amano Misaki), Shino was student council president at her previous school.[ch. 60:extra] She is voiced by Yōko Hikasa.[4]

Aria Shichijo

Aria Shichijō (七条 アリア, Shichijō Aria) is the student council secretary and the same year as Shino;[ch. p1] they are good friends.[ch. p11] She comes from an affluent family and is the most mature character in appearance. However, she has a strongly perverted mind; like Shino, she seems to twist every word and thought into something sexual.[ch. p1,p4,p5] Because she is absurdly rich and overly pampered,[ch. p5] she can be a social airhead: for instance, she waits in front of a door and expects it to slide open[ch. p10] or stands at the bottom of the stairs like she is boarding an escalator.[ch. p7] However, she is academically smart as she ranks second, right under Shino, on midterms for her class year.[ch. p4] Her chest is larger than Shino's,[ch. p4] which causes the latter to feel self-conscious.[ch. p10,p13] Aria is voiced by Satomi Satō.[4]

Suzu Hagimura

Suzu Hagimura (萩村 スズ, Hagimura Suzu) is the student council treasurer and in the same year as Takatoshi.[ch. p1] She describes herself as a returning student with an IQ of 180, can do 10-digit arithmetic calculations in her head,[ch. p1] and is fluent in multiple languages including English,[ch. p1,p6] but she is very sensitive about her short stature and consequently, her height makes her look like an elementary school student, even though she is 16 years old at the start of the series.[ch. p1] Many of the jokes involve her childish appearance or height; she flies into a rage whenever such subjects are mentioned. In situations where multiple characters are conversing, there are gags where only the top of her head is shown,[ch. p14] or a caption and arrow points to where she is.[ch. p5,1] She is voiced by Sayuri Yahagi.[4]

Supporting characters

  • Ranko Hata (畑 ランコ, Hata Ranko) is the head of the school's newspaper club,[ch. p3] she likes to take photos of the student council members to sell around the school, usually without the permission of those being photographed,[ch. 1,7] although she often gets caught with her antics. When she conducts an interview, she likes to twist the responses to something dirty or perverted, with Tsuda as her frequent target.[ch. p3,1] She is expressionless,[vol. 3] and has a deadpan monotone voice in the anime, which strongly contrasts with the other girls' excitable temperaments. she is voiced by Satomi Arai.
  • Mutsumi Mitsuba (三葉 ムツミ, Mitsuba Mutsumi) is Takatoshi's classmate who forms a judo club at the start of the series.[ch. p4] She is dedicated to leading her club, but is also simple-minded.[3] She develops a crush on Takatoshi later in the series and, despite her remarkable potential and drive towards the martial arts, states that her dream is to simply become a bride;[5] in one instance, she combines her family name Tsuda (津田) with her given name Mutsumi (ムツミ).[ch. 151] Because of her pure maiden nature, she often misses the perverted innuendos from Aria and Shino.[6] She is voiced by Chiaki Omigawa.
  • Naruko Yokoshima (横島 ナルコ, Yokoshima Naruko) is a teacher at Ōsai Academy and the advisor of the student council.[ch. p5] She is incredibly perverted, even more so than Aria and Shino, and aggressively seeks out younger guys, including her male students.[ch. p5][3] In the anime, she teaches English and, true to form, her syllabus almost always has perverted content.[3] She is perceived by the council members as unreliable and useless as an educator.[ch. 4] She is voiced by Yuu Kobayashi.[4]
  • Kotomi Tsuda (津田 コトミ, Tsuda Kotomi) is Takatoshi's younger sister,[ch. p9] who ultimately ends up attending Ōsai the next year.[ch. 27] A cheerful girl, she is considerate and caring toward others, but is curious and enthusiastic about sexual matters, as with Ujiie's previous work Imouto wa Shinshuki (My Little Sister Is Going Through Puberty).[ch. 9][3] In one episode, she and Shino both bring Takatoshi adult manga when he was sick.[3] She is very close with her brother, but her comments sometimes imply they have an incestuous relationship, often to Takatoshi's frustration.[ch. 34,39] Nonetheless, she gets along very well with the other girls and is always asking and getting help constantly from them. She is voiced by Asami Shimoda.[4]
  • Kaede Igarashi (五十嵐 カエデ, Igarashi Kaede) is the head of the disciplinary committee at Ōsai Academy.[ch. 3] She has a strong sense of justice and morals, but has an extreme fear of boys as she did not expect the school to turn co-ed when she enrolled.[ch. 3][n 2] She is voiced by Emiri Katou.
  • Sayaka Dejima (出島 サヤカ, Dejima Sayaka) is Aria's personal maid.[ch. 11] She is very protective of Aria, and bears the key to her chastity belt.[ch. 21] She has a fetish for anything that Aria has touched or worn,[ch. 16] as well as unwashed underwear in general.[ch. 31] Dejima is voiced by Mutsumi Tamura.
  • Nene Todoroki (轟 ネネ, Todoroki Nene) is Suzu's friend and a member of the Robot Research Club.[ch. 28] She is as perverted as the rest of the girls,[ch. 28] as she sometimes wears a vibrator during school hours.[ch. 37] She is voiced by Hekiru Shiina.
  • Toki (時さん, Toki-san) is Kotomi's first high school friend.[ch. 36] Toki looks and sounds like a delinquent, but in reality, she is clumsy and shows no signs of a rebellious nature;[ch. 36] in fact, the only reason she leaves her shirt loose was because she accidentally tucked it inside her underwear one day and was embarrassed about it.[ch. 37] She is a bit scatterbrained as she gets lost and arrives late when meeting up with Kotomi.[ch. 64,84] Toki is voiced by Miho Hino.
  • Uomi (魚見, Uomi), nicknamed "Womi",[ch. 135] is the student council president of nearby Eiryou High School. She is introduced when her school visits Ōsai to exchange ideas. She and Shino discover they are much alike in thoughts and thus they get along.[ch. 113,114]

Anime

A 13-episode anime TV series produced by GoHands and directed by Hiromitsu Kanazawa[19] aired in Japan between July 4 and September 26, 2010 on TV Kanagawa.[n 3][20] The anime began airing at later dates on Chiba TV, TV Saitama, Sun TV, KBS, Tokyo MX, TV Aichi, and AT-X.[21][22] Two pieces of theme music are used for the anime: one opening theme and one ending theme. The opening theme is "Yamato Nadeshiko Education" (大和撫子エデュケイション) by Triple Booking, which is a group of characters from the author's previous work Idol no Akahon; the voices are Yōko Hikasa, Satomi Satō and Sayuri Yahagi—the voices of Shino, Aria and Suzu. The ending theme is "Aoi Haru" (蒼い春) by Angela.[23] Six Blu-ray/DVD volumes were released between August 4 and October 27, 2010.[24] Certain scenes in the anime were censored for broadcast on TV, but the BD/DVD releases have the option of turning the majority of the censoring on or off.[citation needed] Original video animation episodes of the anime have been shipping with the limited editions of the manga volumes, beginning with the fifth volume released on April 15, 2011.[25] The OVAs were released with limited edition bundles of the manga and also standalone videos. They are also produced by GoHands and their episodes are numbered as if they continued the TV series. A second television anime season will premiere on January 4, 2014.[26]

An Internet radio show titled Anime 'Seitokai Yakuindomo' ga Zenbu Wakaru Radio, Ryakushite Zenra! (アニメ『生徒会役員共』が全部わかるラジオ、略して全ラ!) produced by Animate TV began streaming online on July 14, 2010 to support the TV series.[27] The show does not have any fixed hosts, but members of the voice cast take turns hosting the show every week.
