Controversy

Kajal Agarwal cover

The cover of the September 2011 issue of FHM featured actress Kajal Agarwal topless, covering her breasts with both hands, wearing black net stockings with polka dots.[18] [19][20] Kajal’s sister and Telugu film actress Nisha Agarwal claimed that her sister had not posed topless for FHM and that the image on the cover had been morphed to increase the magazine’s popularity. Speaking about the controversy caused, Nisha said, "We had to explain to them that it was a morphed picture and exposed the unprofessional conduct of the publishing house."[21] Kajal herself claimed that the image was morphed telling Galatta Cinema magazine, "The photograph was distorted. They have morphed it. I would never do such an act. I shot for the magazine, but not this way. They have photo-shopped the picture and changed it. I was wearing a black tube top while shooting. In fact, I still have the pictures that I shot in the tube top, which they sent [via email] for my approval. Moreover, I did not give them an interview."

However FHM Editor, Kabeer Sharma, denied the claims. In a statement, he said, "FHM has never in the past or will in the future morph pictures of any celebrities. We shot with madam Agarwal on the 18th of August in Mumbai and have a full team composed of assistants, stylists, makeup artists, photographers and others to back it up. We'd be happy to release the full untouched raw pictures on the internet soon to back it up also. Furthermore we also have a model release form signed by Kajal herself. To say that the picture is morphed is an insult to both the brand FHM as well as the collective intelligence of you (her fans) as well as anyone with half an idea about how Photoshop works. We don't know what exactly made Kajal change her mind after the shoot.... but if she did, the magazine really cannot be blamed.[22] I should know I was present at the shoot and Edit FHM India."[23][24][25] FHM subsequently posted the full untouched raw picture on their Facebook wall.[26] They also later posted a topless image of Kajal, from a shoot she had done for Filmfare magazine, on their official Facebook page. FHM claimed that she had posed topless for Filmfare as well. The post stated, "You were right this morphing thing really is getting out of hand. All you guys have to do is buy a copy of Filmfare's September issue, flip a few pages and see for yourself. That's what we did . . ."[27]

Kajal has not made any comment on the issue following FHM's statements.[28]

Veena Malik cover and photo shoot

The cover and photo shoot of the December 2011 issue of FHM, featuring Pakistani model and actress Veena Malik, caused a storm in Pakistan with many people expressing outrage over the nudity and the boldness of the photo. The photo shows Malik nude with her arms and legs hiding her private areas. On her left arm, a tattoo reads ISI, an acronym for the Inter-Services Intelligence (Pakistan's intelligence service).[29] Muslim clerics in Pakistan declared the photos "an insult to Islam".[30] Cleric Maulana Abdul Qawi warned of a fatwā against Malik for "bringing a bad name to Islam". Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) warned Malik of retaliation. A Lahore-based member of the group stated, "She has made fun of all Muslim women and brought shame to the entire nation. Veena Malik will be dealt with accordingly on her return to Pakistan. Our faithful are prepared to welcome her".[31] Pakistani Interior Minister Rahman Malik said that he had not seen the pictures, but vowed to take "strict action" if the photos were legitimate.[32] The Asian Age reported that the Pakistan government may cancel Veena Malik's citizenship or send her into exile for appearing nude.[33][34] Malik's father told AFP, "I have disowned her. I have severed all ties with her, and I don't want her to have any share in whatever meager assets I have until she is cleared of the controversy. I can ignore if she disobeys me, but I cannot tolerate anything against my country and my faith. I am ashamed of what she has done. I request the Government to investigate the matter and ban her entry into the country if the allegations are right." He also pledged not to visit India again.[35] In India, the All India Muslim Tyohar Committee issued a fatwa against Veena Malik on 21 December 2011 and excommunicated her for "objectionable photographs on websites and degrading the sacred institution of Nikah by signing a contract to choose a groom at a TV reality show".[36][37]

Veena Malik, initially, denied having posed for the photo, telling PTI, "I have never posed nude. I have never done anything like that ever. My manager and legal team is looking into the matter. We will take legal action against them." Sohail Rashid, her representative, told The Express Tribune, "Veena knows her limits. I know we have done quite bold stuff/shoots, those which are available on our website, but she knows her parameters. Yes we need to be bold for international magazines, but she won't cross her limits." She later admitted to posing topless with the letters ISI on her arm. However, she accused FHM of doctoring the photograph, leaving her completely naked. Her lawyers served a legal notice to FHM demanding the December edition be withdrawn and that they pay 10 crores (US$2 million) in damages.[38][39] The legal notice claimed that FHM, "intentionally induced our client to take photographs with clothes on and have subsequently tampered with and/or morphed the photographs with a deliberate intent to cheat our client". However, FHM editor Kabeer Sharma denied allegations of morphing the image. He stated the photoshoot was done on 22 November 2011 in Mumbai.[40] He claimed to have video footage of the shoot as well as emails from Malik about how she was looking forward to the cover. He further claimed that the idea to have ISI written on her arm was his, and it was Malik's idea to have it in block letters.[41] Malik's stylist Nitasha Gaurav and photographer Vishal Saxena stated that the photo was genuine.[42]

The legal case is still pending. Malik maintains that she was fully covered in the picture and that FHM morphed it.[43]
