The character has received largely positive critical reception.
Biography
Finn is a human boy who frequently embarks on adventures with his best friend dog, Jake. Finn was 12 years old in the pilot and first season, 13 years old in the second and third, 14 years old in the middle of the third to the fourth, and 15 years old in the middle of the fourth to the fifth. Towards the end of the fifth and beginning of the sixth he should be 16. Having a strong moral code, Finn swore that he would help anyone in need and often performs heroic feats to save the day; however,[2] starting after season 3, Finn's enthusiastic nature becomes more toned down as the series progresses, suggesting he is both maturing and developing as a character as he ages. Finn transitions from having an unrequited crush on Princess Bubblegum (including a brief period where the Princess was youthed to 13 after an incident), to begin a new relationship with Flame Princess. They broke up but Finn admits he is still in love with her. As shown in "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain", Finn appears to have been abandoned in the woods during infancy. He reveals that he had made "boom boom"—a euphemism for defecation—on a large leaf, fallen on it, and lie there crying until Joshua and Margaret, Jake's parents, rescued him from the wilderness and took him in to raise him alongside Jake, who became like a brother to him. As such, Jake is also Finn's adoptive brother. In "Memory of a Memory", a baby Finn is seen singing a song in the bathroom of what appears to be Joshua and Margaret's house. In "Henchman", when Finn is asked about his parents, he says Jake told him that he came from a cabbage, in jest. In "Susan Strong", Finn states that he knows nothing of his human parents or any other humans. He is the only character in the series that ages regularly. This may also be due to his relatively young age compared to characters such as the millennia-old Marceline the Vampire Queen and Ice King. According to the episode "The Vault", Finn has had a number of past lives. In "Red Starved" it is revealed that Finn is color blind, believing that a green emerald was a red ruby. In the Season 6 opener "Escape From the Citadel", Finn lost half of his right arm, up to his elbow, from which a flower protruded. In the episode "Breezy", Finn's arm grows back.
Appearance
Finn is a 5 foot tall 15 year old human. He has several missing teeth, blond hair, of which the length differs due to occasional haircuts. His eyes appear black from a distance, but according to lead character designer Andy Ristaino, they are blue. He wears a white bear hat, denim shorts, and a light blue t-shirt. He also has a green backpack and black shoes with rolled down socks.
Status as the last human
Finn is the only known human in the Land of Ooo. A common theory explaining the etymology of his name includes the Spanish translation of the word end, "fin", alluding to Finn's relation to the extinction of humans. The cause for him being the last human is alluded to by Finn and many other characters as "The Great Mushroom Wars" which wiped out all of the humans. Up until the character "Susan Strong" is introduced, Finn believes that he has never met another human. When Finn encounters Susan Strong, the other members of Susan's tribe of "Hyoomen" are revealed to be mutants, and Susan's identity as a human or mutant is left ambiguous. In the episode "Beautopia", it is hinted upon that Susan may also be human, but it is not confirmed. The Businessmen that Finn meets in the "Business Time" are also likely humans, but they talk like zombies, as it seems their minds have been damaged by being frozen for such a long period of time. They also have boils all over their face, which may also be a result of being frozen. There are many other characters in the show that appear to be human but have been confirmed as humanoids or mutants. Finn's female counterpart Fionna the Human is also a human living in the Land of Ooo, however she exists only in a parallel universe conceived by the Ice King which may or may not be entirely fictional. In the episode "Betty," Betty Grof was brought from the past into Ooo, and later in "Billy's Bucket List" it is revealed that Finn's father is still alive, making Finn currently not the last human.
Age
At the beginning of the series, Finn was a 12-year-old boy who is supposedly the only known human in the land of Ooo. During the episode "Mystery Train", Finn turned 13. After season 3 ended, Pendleton Ward stated in an interview that Finn was 14. Finn was 15 years old in the second half of Season 5, according to Adam Muto.[3] A year has passed since then making Finn 16 as he is shown to age every year.
Clothing
Finn wears a white bear hat that covers his entire head except for his face: The hat has two "ears" sticking out on the top. He also wears a green backpack, which later has a slot for his sword to go in. Finn wears a blue collarless shirt and denim shorts, along with a pair of white socks that are rolled down to the top of his black shoes. Every now and then, when Finn is in the Ice Kingdom, he is depicted wearing a pink sweater that Princess Bubblegum made for him.
