If it's all right with everyone, I'd like to add a link to [1] and a comment to the effect that the origins of "You Are My Sunshine" are rather uncertain. I'd also like to change the "Rice Brothers" like to say "Rice Brothers Gang," since most of the sources I've seen (all from the internet, unfortunately) say that this is the name of Paul Rice's band.
-- The song quotes/borrows rather heavily from the 1915 song "The Wedding Of The Sunshine And The Rose". I doubt it'd make it past copyright laws these days! —Preceding unsigned comment added by PlayerRoll (talk • contribs) 11:27, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Just for your information, guys. Here's a Ukrainian folk song "Ой, там на горі": http://nostalgie.com1.ru/mihhail/trio_marenych/15-oi_tam_na_gori.mp3 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chivorotsen (talk • contribs) 10:45, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
I believe the Ukrainian folk song referenced above was a remix. The original melody is quite different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlN1nC93uGM — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.176.252.32 (talk) 17:29, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
My Grandma talks about writing this song as a poem (see the Paul Rice link) and sending the poem into a radio station. At the time if you wanted the poem to be credited to you, you had to send in a small fee with the song. Grandma could not afford the fee so she just sent in the poem. She lives in a small town in Minnesota. Sun7shine (talk) 03:41, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
International success
As the song is well known in Australia, it occurred to me that some information on the global success, sales and popularity of the song would be good. Alpheus (talk) 20:05, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

==Recordings==
"You Are My Sunshine" has been recorded many times. It is today a widely recognized song and a standard for traditional country music and traditional jazz performers. Early chart versions include: Bing Crosby, Bob Atcher and Bonnie Blue Eyes, Gene Autry, and the Airport Boys. In one or more of these versions, the song was in Billboard's country charts for over one year. Rock and roll performances by Tony Sheridan and Bill Haley & His Comets also exist. The Haley performance was recorded in 1969 and was sung by the band's bass player, Ray Cawley; it was not released until the early 1990s. Jump, Little Children used to play a song called "Pink Lemonade" which borrowed the chorus and was a success with fans. The song has also been recorded by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Trini Lopez, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin from Aretha Arrives (1967), among others. Charles' version was the most popular, commercially, reaching #1 on the soul singles chart, and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, using a modified melody that little resembled the original. A duet between Charles and Chris Isaak was included in Charles' 2005 duets album Genius & Friends. Northern Irish hard rockers Therapy? recorded an excerpt of the song, which was released as a bonus track on their 1994 album Troublegum. Songwriter Conor Oberst uses the chorus of the song in dramatic effect on "The Calendar Hung Itself" by Bright Eyes. The outro of the song "Flowers and Football Tops" by the Scottish band Glasvegas features the first verse of "You Are My Sunshine". |
Commercial Use
I recall a 1970's commercial (for Lemon Up shampoo?) in which a man in the street serenades a woman in a window using modified lyrics: You are my lemon, my only lemon...MistySpock (talk) 04:53, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Youtube video
Im not sure I believe this Youtube video claiming a Ukrainian origin of the melody of the song. How do we know the Ukrainian song is older? Couldnt it just be an adaptation of the melody that originated in the USA? ☮Soap☮ 13:32, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
- I removed it, and I see up above that this has been debated before ... I saw that the link was only recently added and didnt realize it had been here in 2008 as well.☮Soap☮ 13:37, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
:everything good is come from Ukraine. Everything stupid is come from America. Is proof. American too stupid to know this.
