The Indian subcontinent has a history of devastating earthquakes. The major reason for the high frequency and intensity of the earthquakes is that the Indian plate is driving into Asia at a rate of approximately 47 mm/year.[1] The following is a list of major earthquakes in India.

Not known Radically altered the geography of what is now Kerala. Submerged the ancient port city of Muziris. The Cochin {Kochi) port was opened up. Sea receded several kilometers down from the port town of Kaduthuruthy. A large lake in the Western Ghats in Bhoothathankettu near Kothamangalam believed to have emptied into the Periyar river causing a massive flood and making the river to change its course. Not known
