History
Under British rule, Lefkoniko had a population of about 4,000, consisting of a Greek Cypriot majority and a Turkish Cypriot minority. In an anti-British demonstration, schoolboys burned the village post office. A collective fine was placed on the inhabitants of Lefkoniko. The governor of Cyprus ordered a 24-hour curfew on Lefkoniko until the fine was paid.[2]
In 1909, the first co-op in Cyprus was founded here.
In 1939, the municipality of Lefkoniko was established. The population of the town was 2,596 in 1946 and 2,358 in 1960. With regard to its area, it is the 6th largest municipality in Cyprus and the 4th largest settlement in Famagusta District. In 1960, it was the 8th most populous settlement in Famagusta District and 32nd in the whole of Cyprus.
