The Carolina Reaper is a cultivar of chili pepper of the Capsicum chinense species, originally named the "HP22BNH", bred by Ed Currie, who runs PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina, United States. As of 2012[update], it is the world's most pungent pepper.
The original crossbred was between a Ghost Chili pepper and a Red Habanero pepper.[1] The "Carolina Reaper" has been rated as the world's hottest chili pepper by Guinness World Records since 2014.[2] It averages a 1,569,300 on the Scoville scale with peak levels of over 2,200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
