Media Factory has published 14 volumes under their MF Bunko J imprint since November 2009. A manga adaptation by Hakaru Takagi began serialization in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine in 2010. A 12-episode anime television series adaptation aired in Japan between October and December 2013.

Plot

In an alternate history version of the United Kingdom in the early 20th century, scientists created a mixture of technology and sorcery called Machinart, circuits made from spells that were put into objects to bring them to life and give them artificial intelligence. These Automatons were developed as a military weapon and spread throughout the world, the humans in charge of them became known as puppeteers

A puppeteer named Raishin Akabane came from Japan to Liverpool to study at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart, along with his automaton Yaya. Once every four years, the Academy holds the "Night Party", a competition where puppeteers use their automatons to fight in hopes of obtaining the title of "Wiseman". Rashin, however, enters the school and the competition in order to get revenge on his elder brother Tenzen Akabane, a mysterious genius that killed the other members of their family.

Characters

Main characters

The main characters as listed in the anime adaptation character page.[1]

Raishin Akabane (赤羽 雷真, Akabane Raishin)
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono[2] (Japanese); Clifford Chapin[3] (English)
The main protagonist, he is a puppetmaster which has been studying abroad from Japan who was shunned by his family due to his lack of puppeteer talent until they are killed by a mysterious assailant. He is outgoing, good natured, and tries his best to help everyone, but when his brother Tenzen destroyed the clan, his personality went through a major change to that of desperation. After being taken under Shouko's wing, he often came off as impatient or selfish and only went back to normal after he finished his training. Despite his appearance and his lackluster grades, he is actually quite intelligent and when conversing with people, he is quite observant, thinks thoroughly before he talks, and appears cautious around those he perceives as dangerous. He's perfectly willing to bend the rules and even help his former enemies if it can contribute to his revenge. He's also a close quarter combat specialist and a swordsman, having taught sword skills to Yaya that served the basis for her Ultimate arts.
Yaya (夜々)
Voiced by: Hitomi Harada[2] (Japanese); Bryn Apprill[3] (English)
Raishin's automaton, she was assembled by Karyusai Shouko using both mechanical and organic parts, making her a Banned Doll. Similar to a human girl in appearance, she is in love with Raishin, who repels all her advances, and is taken by jealousy when he gets close to any other woman. Second oldest in the "Setsugetsuka" Trilogy (Snow, Moon, Flower) by Shouko, Yaya, with "ya" referring to night, hints the moon. The design of Yaya's is taken from Raishin's childhood friend. She possess the "Kongouriki" magic circuit. Her "Kongouriki" is peerless under heaven but, there are some things that she cannot go up against. For example, Tyrant Rex’s magic circuit "Gram". Usually, an instruction is issued in the form of a [Type of Magic + Amount of Magic Energy + Formation (the output of the magic)]. For example of Magic Art in action would be: "Suimei Nijuuyonshou (吹鳴二十四衝)", "Tenken Shijuuhatsuketsu (天嶮四十八結)", "Kouen Nijuuyonshou (光焔二十四衝)", or "Shinkan Shijuuhachishou (森閑四十八衝)", in addition, Raishin has Ultimate arts (絶衝 Zesshou) which are extreme applications of each type of Magic. "Tenken Zesshou: Hakyaku Suigetsu (天嶮絶衝: 破却水月)", she used it in volume 1 and 6. She moves her fist to the enemy's vital spot, then suddenly use all her body and the strength of her ability to deliver an explosive force (similar to one-inch punch) and completely blast the enemy apart from the insides. "Suimei Zesshou: Hisagi Tachikage (吹鳴絶衝: 楸木太刀影)", she used it in volume 2. She involves focusing her strength all to her legs, and then produces an ultra fast and powerful dash that would destroy anything in its path. "Kouen Zesshou: Midare Zakura (光焔絶衝: 乱れ夜桜)", she used it in volume 3. She unleashes barrage of punches and kicks like a machine gun firing at high speeds which carried the force of a bullet. At the slightest twitch of her target she would immediately track her target and pound her target back which make her target unable to escape. "Shinkan Zesshou: Shinki Mikazuchi (森閑絶衝: 神機御雷)", she used it in volume 4. "Getsuei Guren (月影紅蓮)", she used it in volume 8 and 9. She spins like a hurricane and produces a powerful roundhouse kick that is enough to heat the air itself and produce a crimson aura. She is a doll that has the potential to become a "Machine-Doll" at the end of the volume 12. However, there are only 10 days remaining on her life as well the "Night Party" (will be completed in 10 days). In volume 13, Shouko told Raishin to be the Wiseman, in order to allow taboo research that might save her life.
Charlotte Belew (シャルロット・ブリュー, Sharurotto Buryū)
Voiced by: Megumi Takamoto[2] (Japanese); Kristin Sutton[3] (English)
A second-year puppeteer at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart. Her registration code "Tyrant Rex" and one of the "Rounds" ranked 6th in the Night Party. Her nickname is "Charl". She is a beautiful girl with blonde hair and with blue eyes. She is very sensitive when it comes to her chest. She secretly use padding on her chest to make it look big but unknowingly Raishin knows her secret. She was feared by the students because she is not good at socializing, and thus taking the problem behavior in many cases and was called "T-Rex" but later will be called "Valiant Rex" with the kind of respect after she have won the battle with Olga. London bookmakers have she is at three-to-one on winning it, which means she is one of the leading candidates for the Wiseman’s throne. She is the daughter of the Earl of the Belew family noble aristocracy who aspires to be the Wiseman in order to revive the Belew household. Charlotte Belew, of the noble house of Belew, who the Queen herself bestowed the unicorn coat of arms and conferred the northern grounds to. The Belew house of nobles was an eminent family in the British Empire. Count Belew, Charlotte’s father, was known as an avid collector of automata. There were numerous automata in their home, and everyone got along well, so all of them passed their days like a real family, automata included. But, one day, a boy of extremely high social position came to visit as a guest. Her dog automaton ended up hurting the boy. Her father received an extremely severe reprimand from the royal family. Her father countship was stripped from him, and their lands were confiscated. A large number of the automata which were part of their family ended up being dismantled. With their assets frozen, the family fell into poverty. His father couldn’t find any work in the country, so her father was forced to move to France to work as a puppeteer by himself. However, things didn’t seem to go well for her father. Before long, contact with the his father was lost. While she was off at boarding school, her sister’s and mother's whereabouts were lost to her as well. Finally, she ran out of money for her school fees, and was kicked out of the boarding school. However, she ran into good fortune. The Belew name was famous for Machinart. The Royal Academy of Machinart, Walpurgis was an institution that placed more weight on potential rather than hearsay. Even a felon’s daughter was welcome. With a student loan, she was able to enroll into the academy. Ever since then, she began working towards her dream. As she doesn't want to feel bad about going against friends, she refuses to make friends. However, acquainted with Raishin after challenged her in order to deprive eligible to participate in the Night Party and become friends after she was saved by Raishin from Cannibal Candy. She doesn't want to admit herself that she is being attracted to Raishin initially. Seems there is a tended of BL hobby, and bite violently in the topic and she reminiscent of the coupling of Loki and Raishin. In volume 11, she confronted the queen in order to save her beloved Raishin, she steps out to fight the queen and the Magic Association's army all on her own. A one-man army. She and Sigmund basically blows most of the army apart, but the queen brings out her trump card, a colossus automaton named Aegis. Aegis defeats Sigmund. She falls off and disappears in the explosion, and the queen captures Sigmund and imprisons the unconscious dragon in a cage.
Sigmund (シグムント, Shigumunto)
Voiced by: Jōji Nakata[2] (Japanese); David Wald[3] (English)
Charlotte's automaton in the form of a dragon, he has scales of steel color with wings of four, and he often sits on top of the hat of Charlotte or on her shoulder when he is in his small form. He is interested in Raishin who looks fairly on automatons. Also, he gets along well with Yaya as he is also the adviser of her. His favorite food is chicken. He is a Banned Doll. He is said to be made from the evil dragon that his ancestors exterminated. There’s a legend passed down from generation to generation in the Belew household. The first lord of the Belew house went up a dangerous mountain where the first lord of the Belew defeated and tamed the rampaging dragon, Sigmund, making it the first lord of the Belew's servant. For the first lord of the Belew success the first lord of the Belew was appointed as viscount, and since then the first lord of the Belew and his descendants have worked together with him. According the legends, he ate people, burnt down towns, did every evil deed in the book. Even now, he needs to consume flesh periodically to maintain his body. He has lived for about 150 years, he has the eyes to see a certain person and his personality is thoughtful, giving often advice to Yaya that is often in a fit of frustration and anxiety from the standpoint of being an orphaned and supports her. He possess the "Magic Sword (Gram)" magic circuit. The secrets that are said to be involved in the truth of the universe, magic circuit that is responsible for generation and annihilation of matter. Extinguish with light materials (light side effect when the substance is to be extinguished) antimatter particle cannon such as "Flash Cannon" shelling of shotgun like the ease of use by suppressing the output main weapon is the "Raster Flare" shelling of tracking missile-like "Raster Cannon". Because of that, there is no counter-measure for it. No matter how hard the object, or how mirrored the object is, they’re all powerless before the magic art. Basically, as long as it has form, it will be annihilated. Even Yaya (who is tough as a steel), if she were to be hit by that head on, she would die. When he transfers into his true form he becomes a giant dragon three metres in height and eight metres in length. His size and mass can regulate or increase the mobility by suppressing more compact, and crush the enemy with brute force. In a flashback in volume 9, 120 years ago, The Dragon King ordered him to go into hiding as he heard the news about Brynhild's defeat and Thor's capture. He follows the order reluctantly only after his master told him to meet up again when the situation dies down. He returns that night only to find the place ruined. The Dragon King never had the intention of leaving. Irene helped him accept the death of his master and promised to lend him a hand in his revenge. From that day on he followed the Belew family. In volume 11, he and Charlotte confronted Gloria and the Magic Association's army. After the queen defeated him and Charlotte, he was captured by the queen and imprisons him in a cage. He is thought too valuable to be destroyed, and he is considered one of England's treasures.
Frey (フレイ, Furei)
Voiced by: Kana Asumi[2] (Japanese); Lindsay Seidel[3] (English)
A third-year at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart. Her Registration code "Silent Roar" ranked 99th (She was originally the 100th seat. She went two ranks up, and one rank down, and now she’s in 99th place. By the voluntary demotion of Loki, after, 98th) in the Night Party. A clumsy girl with crimson eyes and a hair fastened to the right of deep pearl colour. She wears a curiously long scarf, a garterbelt, and a fluffy ribbon. She has a weak face, withdrawn nature, delicate figure, and has large breast. She belong to "Machine Tactics Department" course. She is also one of the "Promised Children" or man-made mediums with hearts fitted with a magic circuit that can draw out mana from the host to increase her automaton's power and are at risk of cardiac arrest and magic runaway. She has a sixth sense that can perceive an invisible Nozzle. Her automaton is a black dog called Rabbi. Her name "Frey" was an identification code. It was given to her after she came to D-Works. Her parents were extremely skilled puppeteers. They were in an American troupe performing puppet shows for the public. Her parents died because they lost control of the automata they were handling, and it went on a rampage right in the middle of the show. The audience were showered in the mother’s blood. For such an innocent girl to witness such a tragic accident firsthand; she never smiled again. In truth, it was a monkey business of Bronson wearing an eye on the quality of Frey and Loki. They were killed under the guise of an accident in the middle of a play. She and Loki fell in the hands of Bronson. There are sections that had been treated as an experimental body from Bronson, are subject to harsh training, and admission to the Academy. She first appears in a failed assassination attempt on Raishin to eliminate him before the start of the Night Party. After the D-Works incident, she appears to be gradually showing feelings for Raishin and the relationship between Loki and her began to improve. It was also adapted notice that the clumsy tenderness and true feelings of Loki. In addition, she is allowed to pucker Charlotte every Night Party. She has been upgraded to "Surround Roar" for attacking as a unit. She has been able to rack up several victories; while Raishin and Loki were incapacitated, she had already won five matches. She had just defeated the 93rd seat the previous night at the end of "Sword Angel" arc. Even Loki himself stated that she is on par with the Rounds and she even beat someone from the Rounds very late on in volume 8 of the light novel. In volume 11, she has shown signs of death, as her heart is breaking down, and she does not have much time left.
  • Rabbi (ラビー, Rabī)
Frey's automaton in the form of a wolf-like dog and a Bandoll. When he is in a berserk mode his body increased in size and rather than a dog his looks were closer to an alpha wolf. His strength and speed increase as well and he can regenerate his wounds instantly by converting Frey's blood.
Loki (ロキ, Roki)
Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto[2] (Japanese); Chris Burnett[3] (English)
A second-year puppeteer at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart. His registration code "Sacred Blaze" and ranked 7th (voluntarily demoted to 99th after) in the Night Party. A handsome slender young man with crimson eyes and long hair of brilliant shade of pearl. He is wearing a half-sized mantle draped over his shoulder. He can freely manipulate an automaton of steel and difficult operation known as "Cherubim". He is Frey's younger brother but take a high-handed attitude or slightly because of the number on stage in one's own price. However, his true feelings are worries about her sister, and also he lowered his rank for he was trying to defeat Raishin instead who was supposed to hit Frey at the opening match. In knowing defeat in combat exercises, high distinction (he says his grade average are AAA+), and completed the replication of book burning at a rate far exceeding the expectations of Kimberley. He is one of the 13 members of the "Rounds", and a magician with the power of magic substantial enough to be the eyes and as well as someone who’s been acknowledged as a potential rival to the "Marshal". He’s been undefeated in all his mock battles. Even though he’s only a second year, he’s already one of the 10 most powerful in the school. He is called "Sword Emperor" by the majority of students, and is still considered the same rank as "thirteen people" even after his demotion. He is also one of the "Promise Children" having their heart modify which has been implanted with a magic circuit. A mechanized heart, which could either stop suddenly, or had the potential to run wild. With Frey, they aim the Wiseman throne in order to restore their heart which was considered taboo research because creation of internal organs was considered taboo research. He seems to be the same blood type as Raishin. His automaton is a robot called Cherubim. His favorite phrase when pouring out his anger is “If I may say so, I am a tolerant person. However, there are three things in this world I cannot forgive. People who give me orders. People who defy me. (and the third is random)”. He mastered the mind's eye and becomes stronger in close combat, and he will be able to react even in long distance attack. In volume 11, he tries to fight Asura, who is leading the academy in a revolution against Edward Rutherford, but he loses to Asura, and Cherubim is destroyed. He picks up the broken blade left behind by his destroyed automaton and continues after Asura.
  • Cherubim (ケルビム, Kerubimu)
Voiced by: Andrew T. Chandler[3] (English)
Loki's automaton. A grotesque looking automaton that looked like several steel sheets had been crunched together to form a humanoid appearance. (If one word was used to describe it, it would be “Painful”). Thorn-like protrusions covered its body, which were covered with multiple thin edges. The whole body is metallic, giving it a wholly artificial looking existence. Instead of hands, two large blades were set in place. The blades were roughly the length of Yaya’s height. This was probably a blade that relied on its heavy weight to force its way through objects. And eight short swords flying like a missile from the back. Based on appearance alone, his one defining trait was heaviness. He generated the image of a car which weighed in the region of a hundred kilograms or more. Something whose rampage would be impossible to control. He makes a way of speaking mechanically. His favorite phrase is “I'm ready.” He possess the "hot air operation (Jet)" magic circuit, converged hot air to which can even cut through Yaya as well while using her steel like defense. Can be moved by using a Jet of air, and to slip the ground. Can also be transformed into a giant sword, swing by magic, and can aboard to fly above. The "Angel" series are automata developed by a different research laboratory. On a one-to-one comparison, it far surpasses the combat ability of the "Garm" series. Because it’s made up of inorganic components, it’s easy and straightforward to maintain. The only problem is that the cost to produce it is high, and it’s difficult to control. Its a very raw, close to a wooden puppet type of automaton. Only an extremely skilled puppeteer can handle it. If a puppeteer wanted it to perform complicated maneuvers, he would need a very delicate sense of control. Independent action didn’t seem to be one of the strong points of its software. There is an automatic protection feature called "Barrier of Swords", eight short swords floating in mid-air; with the operator in the heart of it, slowly rotating around the operator, a barrier that automatically attacked any intruder that came within its zone of control. He was created by D-Works as a model for the "Angel Type" automatons. In volume 11, he was destroyed by Asura.

She has long pink hair and has pink eyes and she is wearing a headdress which is covering her whole face with a written kanji character "火" on it which means "Fire". She is wearing tiny vivid pink ribbons tied into her hair. Adorned with frills and lace, clad in beautiful dress. The dress had a kinky aesthetic to it. In vogue with the late nineteenth century trends, her scent was that of death and decadence. She wields 2 daggers. Her magic circuit is related to pressure, she produce heat in the surplus. Initially, even the most observant analysts such Raishin and Alice assumed that her ability is a form of physical enhancement similar to Yaya, being able to fight on par with her. That was until when Raishin perfectly dodged one of her strikes in a fight, but ended up sustaining severe internal injuries in the process and nearly died. She is capable of making instantaneous combustion to the enemy's insides without directly touching them, although the true nature of the ability remains unknown. Raishin speculated that it's this ability that was able to enhance her physical ability. She has the appearance of looking just like Raishin's sister, Nadeshiko, but she appears to be cold and highly hostile to Raishin, attacking him without a split second of hesitation when they were stranded away from others. She is also devoted to Magnus, always putting his safety as her top priority. She sees Raishin as a threat, and she has tried to kill him multiple times when she had the freedom to. Her name means "Firefly". In volume 10, she got trapped with Raishin when the magic of one of Magnus' automatons, Kamakiri went haywire when Raishin interfered with it, and they were both teleported them down the cave complex under the school. As they are surrounded by monsters, they were forced to rely upon each other for the duration of their time within that complex since she runs out of magic quickly and requires Raishin to replenish hers. Raishin saves her from the former Wiseman Räikkönen and she stands up with the "Setsugetsuka" sisters to fight alongside them. It was part of Magnus' plan to have Raishin save her. In volume 11, it seems that she has some of Nadeshiko's memories. She has the feeling that Raishin is her brother.
Felix Kingsfort (フェリクス・キングスフォート, Ferikusu Kingusufōto)
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji[2] (Japanese); Ian Sinclair[3] (English)
A third-year at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart and the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee as well as a vital cornerstone of the academy’s autonomy. His registration code "maiden ginyari (Valkyrie)" and one of the "Rounds" ranked 4th in the Night Party. A very handsome lad with a beautiful hair and is popular with the women. The Kingsforts are renowned as philanthropists, and they’re a well-liked family and have close ties to the British Intelligence Department, and are one of the most influential members of the House of Lords. The head of the family is Sir Walter, his father. After the late queen died his father became one of the leaders of the Great British Empire from which his father derives a lot of power. Even in the academy that sort of influence cannot be ignored. When "Cannibal Candy" uproar occurred, he approached Raishin with a deal that makes him eligible to participate on the Night Party with the condition that Raishin must defeat the culprit known as "Cannibal Candy", who is responsible for the disappearance of several puppeteers. It is later revealed that he is "Cannibal Candy" and that he had been using underhand tactics to get rid of top students at the academy so that he could have an easier path to becoming the Wiseman. Part of his plan includes framing Charlotte as the culprit. After Raishin defeated him, the headmaster publicly denounced him as "Cannibal Candy" and was stripped eligible to participate in the "Night Party". Because of that, his father has lost much of his standing.

Felix's automaton. She was made during the Renaissance time. She possess the "eating magic (Predator)" and "white mock fog (White Mist)" magic circuit. She is wearing an armour which look like a Valkyrie. She had an old-fashioned armour and was carrying a greatsword. The helmet covered her face fully, it looked like some sort of demonic mask. Her magic circuits are disposable. Once they’ve been discarded they can’t be reloaded. There’s also a limit as to how much she can use a circuit. That’s why a large number of circuits have to be amassed. At the point in time when Raishin and Felix started their battle, she had forty-seven types of magic arts under her control. The number of known victims was at least twenty. If all of their magic arts were now hers, then she’d be more than a match for an army.

Headmaster of Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart.[3] His complexion is tan, he has a moustache, and has wrinkles in the outer corners of his eyes. He was splendidly well-built, and even Raishin would have no trouble believing it if someone told him this man was from the army. He was the most powerful magician of the 19th century. Holder of "The Key of Solomon". He has a book that can summon various legendary overpowered automatons, however he can only have one out at a time. In volume 10, the "Magic Association" attacks Walpurgis Machinart Academy, with Astrid, the "Gold Rose", leading the assault. Astrid is confronted by Charlotte, Frey, Loki, Hinowa, Asura and Sonechka despite the students combining forces, they couldn't defeat Astrid. It was his intervention that forced Astrid to retreat because Astrid knew she couldn't defeat him. In volume 11, he was imprisoned by the army.

The president of Machinart studio Divine-Works of up-and-coming and a former contender for the title of Wiseman once called the "angel sliding the sword (Sword Angel)" (perhaps his registered code at the time), two decades ago. Loki and Frey adoptive father and biological father of Hazel. A sleek gentleman with long blue hair. Once, he was also one who aspired for the Wiseman’s seat. He was defeated somewhere along the road to the Wiseman’s seat, and left the Night Party and after that, he founded D-Works. The handsome youth once heralded as an angel who becomes a middle-aged man, and one who used to control swords telekinetically now has rely on machines. Having some admonishment to the Wiseman name, he actually called his creation Lucifer thus revealing his true goal, he who were once called the "Sword Angel". He can float in the mid-air by the means of powerful "Telekinesis" as if he was controlling the gravity itself. He owns an advanced form of Cherubim called Lucifer. Later it is revealed that he was performing illegal experiments on Frey, Loki and several other "Promised Children". He was confronted by Raishin and Loki who overwhelmed him by both of their combined abilities and Raishin's strategy which defeated him. To be bound by the "Cruzada", was sentenced to execution by the Magician Association for modification of a human body, disassembly of human bodies into parts, illegal disposal of human bodies, human experimentation, kidnapping, and murder.

A third-year at Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart and Chairman’s Assistant of the Disciplinary Committee. Her Registration code "white mock fog (White Mist)" ranked 34th in the Night Party. She calls Raishin insults (such as tapeworm, tubifex worm, mosquito larva, maggots are examples of abusive insults which is for some reason fixated on the variations of long and thin worms) to spit a bad word against Raishin. In truth, she is Felix's Banned Doll automaton named Eliza. She was definitely a human up to a certain point in time mostly likely she was murdered and Felix replaced her with his automaton. Felix had modified his automaton, Eliza, and had it take her place in school. She was in a place to steal the automaton of Felix and she is killed the evening before the practice. Her real body is hidden on her own "Locker". Her automaton is Snow White (スノーホワイト, sunōhowaito).
