Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions. However, I noticed that your username (GrammarFascist) may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it uses the string "fascist" which can upset other editors and is not conducive to maintaining a productive and collaborative editing environment. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account to use for editing. Thank you. Daniel Case (talk) 02:49, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for dropping by, Daniel! I appreciate the welcome, and also your bringing your concern over my choice of username to me first. Personally I don't think anyone else would be offended, because the string "fascist" in the context of the username applies only to me (so I'm not insulting anyone else by calling them fascist) and I also think it's sufficiently obvious that my use of "fascist" is tongue-in-cheek (by analogy to the commonly-used term grammar Nazi -- which I avoided mainly out of concern that the term Nazi is so offensive!) and thus not likely to be misconstrued as an endorsement of literal fascism on my part. I am something of a notorious "grammar Nazi" among people who know me, and by far the majority of my anonymous contributions (see here and here for recent examples; my ISP doesn't provide static IP addresses so my address changes periodically) have been corrections of other editors' errors of grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
I recognize, however, that generally the opinion of a person who is offended takes precedence over the opinions of either the offending person or a third party whose opinions are that the language or action in question doesn't seem offensive to them. So, if anyone is genuinely offended by it, I will gladly change my username... and you're very much welcome to solicit comment / consensus. (I'd do that myself, but I'm really only shallowly familiar with features of the Wikipedia interface more involved than making fairly minor article edits; it would probably take me hours to figure out how to do it.) It certainly wasn't my intent to offend anyone... I'm somewhat more of a prescriptivist than a descriptivist, but I choose my battles (I still use whom, for example, but I'm aware that it's virtually extinct in contemporary usage and only correct instances of hypercorrection) and also try not to be a douche (meaning 2) about my nitpickery. Thanks again.
P.S. Do you know how to make a link to Wiktionary without doing it as a regular external link? GrammarFascist (talk) 14:56, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're fine, but you might want to explain the joke in an amusing way on your userpage (maybe including a link to urban dictionary?). Some jokes don't translate internationally, especially those that rely on slang. (For the record, I was entertained.)
To link to Wiktionary do this: [[wikt:Foo|Foo]] This produces Foo. There are also some templates that create other sorts of links, which you can read about here. Danger (talk) 17:53, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Feeders

Hi, I just declined your redirect request for "Feeder (apiculture)". I'm not quite sure what you intended with that request. The redirect should not point to the disambiguation page because that will just leave the reader with a list of meanings of the term "feeder"; instead we should, if at all, redirect to the most relevant article. In our case, that's either feeder (beekeeping) or Langstroth hive, probably the former. But I doubt anybody would explicitly search for "feeder (apiculture)", making a redirect of that name rather useless. I believe the best way forward would be to mention feeder (beekeeping) on the disambiguation page and to change the link at Langstroth hive to point to "(beekeeping)" instead of "(apiculture)". Do you agree? Huon (talk) 13:00, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I feel silly now! It didn't even occur to me to check whether a Feeder (beekeeping) article existed, once I determined that no such article was linked to from either the disambig page or the Langstroth hive article. I've edited both those pages to point to the correct feeder article, so yes, I agree that there seems to be no need for an (apiculture) redirect — if there are any other apiculture-related pages which should point to Feeder (beekeeping) but don't yet, the corrected disambig page entry should get users looking for it there eventually. Thanks for pointing out my oversight so gently. —GrammarFascist (talk) 11:19, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thank you so much for the edit of James Taranik's page. I did not understand the suggestions made by the previous editor, and was afraid to make a mistake trying to followup for fear of inciting his wrath. I am slowly learning how to do this, and seeing your work helped me understand some things better. You are wonderful! Dchittur (talk) 18:18, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Heading Needed

HI  GrammarFascist:, I have created a new heading named 'gallery' here , but it is not being displayed as an heading , can you please help me , I 'm asking this favor as it you are very experienced here? -- Aryan hindustan (talk) ,Aryan from Hindustan (talk) 07:53, 15 September 2015 (UTC)-- Aryan hindustan (talk) ,Aryan from Hindustan (talk) 07:40, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Aryan hindustan. I had a look at the article for you. It now has independent sources (not just the museum's own website), and more complete information about the museum. Unfortunately, most of the images you had included are not appropriate for the article, so I did not restore the Gallery section. (Image galleries are generally deprecated on Wikipedia anyway, even though you may still see articles that have them.) Please do not put the other images back into the article, as they will only be removed by other editors, and may cause an edit war. If you could go back to the museum and take photos of the exhibits without museum visitors in the photo, though, those photos would be very welcome! —GrammarFascist (talk) 15:45, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OREDA

Hello GrammarFascist, regarding the OREDA page, I am wondering if we can jsut simply delete the picture about the troll B as I dont think it is relevant. One more question, if I want to have a Chinese page about the OREDA, what is the procedure? By the way I speak chinese. So I can translate by myself. Thanks NT DK (talk) 08:45, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NT DK. We could of course just delete the image; I decided to add an image at that point in the article to break it up a little, as the formatting and length of the History section make it somewhat monotonous. I think it would be better to replace the Troll B image with a different offshore platform photo, though I don't think it's a problem for the Troll B photo to stay there for now. Here are photos of oil platforms in the North Sea that are ready to be used on Wikipedia — I think it might be easier for you to tell which ones are operated by OREDA members than it would be for me.
As far as creating a page on the Chinese Wikipedia (I'm presuming the Chinese you speak is Mandarin, rather than Cantonese or another of the regional languages), first let me say that I do not know what the rules are at zh.wikipedia.org — you could try browsing WikiProject China for users who are currently active on (English) Wikipedia, and ask on someone's talk page whether they're familiar with the article creation rules at the Chinese Wikipedia. If the rules there are the same as the rules here, any logged-in user whose account has existed for at least four days can create an article without having to submit a draft and have it approved. Typically an easy way to get to the create-an-article page is to search Wikipedia for the name you want the article to have; then, when the "Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name" page comes up, click the link that says "Start the [article name] article, using the Article Wizard if you wish, or add a request for it." Of course the text would be different on the Chinese Wikipedia, but the meaning should be equivalent. That is, unless things are completely different there; which, again, I simply don't know. —GrammarFascist (talk) 09:13, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Let's just keep the picture as it is one of the participants' operating field. Thanks for your explanation for the Chinese version and you are right that I mean Mandarin.NT DK (talk) 09:48, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi GrammarFascist, did you see the OREDA page where it says the article or section may have been copied and pasted from another document? Any actions needed to be taken? Thank you. NT DK (talk) 14:47, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

samtar (msg) 08:10, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, samtar. I was not the creator of the draft, just the user who addressed issues with it so it could pass AfC review. When I work on drafts that have previously failed AfC review, I either wait for the creator (or other contributor/s) to resubmit them, or resubmit them myself, because I don't meet the requirements to be an AfC reviewer yet and therefore don't feel I should move the drafts to mainspace myself.

I have copied the above notice to Mand0002's talk page — they created the original article that was then moved to draft space. If this was incorrect, please let me know. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 16:12, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome!

Hi GrammarFascist: Thanks so much for the friendly welcome. It's very helpful. I actually just added a message to a page that you had noticed also, and that is for the ZAP group. I live in CA wine country and go to probably too many wine events so am familiar with many of the organizations. From what I can tell, ZAP seems to have accomplished a lot of things above and beyond just wine events which would make them a good candidate for an article. I have time these days and would like to spend some of it writing so thought putting something together here would be a good project. BTW, as an old editor I find your username to be enjoyable- I have been accused to being similar! best, PH Solution (talk) 23:10, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, PH Solution. Wikipedia welcomes your contributions! I have to warn you that you may find the ZAP article a disappointing article to start with, though. Wikipedia's notability standard can be difficult to meet; it requires not just multiple articles that mention the subject, but that are entirely or substantially about the subject. Thus, for example, an article about legislation that mentions ZAP's advocacy would not contribute toward the notability requirement, but an article about ZAP that mentions their legislation advocacy would count. I also saw many articles, though I didn't read all of them; but I did not see any that I thought would be sufficient to establish ZAP's notability to be the subject of its own article on Wikipedia.
As I said, however, I do believe there are more than sufficient sources to establish the notability of Zinfandel Experience, and as the organizing body, ZAP could have a section within that article mentioning things like their legislation advocacy. Nevertheless, the article as it currently exists may yet be deleted rather than moved into the drafts area of the site to be converted into a Zinfandel Experience article. We just have to wait and see what the consensus that develops is. In the meantime there are many other articles you could work on! Sometimes I just click on the Random article link (in the left-hand sidebar of every page) until I see an article I think I can improve. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 23:40, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You make lots of good points. I might indeed try some random articles first. One aspect puzzles me that perhaps you can help. Before I did any research on the ZAP group, I looked at many other wine organizations to see how they fared. Most did not have entries, but some did. One was the Wine Institute, which had very few references (although I know of it and they do some really good work), and the other was the Rhone Rangers, which actually cited ZAP as the model for their organization and had very few links about them directly. Let me quickly add that I don't want to flag these groups or bring unwanted attention, but it seemed that if they could be included, then the ZAP should definitely be. Maybe I should create a personal sandbox and post what I've researched and see what interested people think? BTW, I appreciate all your help and won't bug you for advice. PH Solution (talk) 23:53, 25 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Let me get talk-page indenting out of the way first. It is customary for the first comment in a topic to be unindented. The next person to reply begins each paragraph of their response with a colon, as I did above, and you did too. However, each person responding is supposed to use one more colon than the person above them did. I have corrected your indenting, and as you'll see when you edit the page again, I used ::: in this response. Your next reply should have four. This is also the convention when editing the Teahouse's questions page directly. Indenting should generally not, however, be used on articles.
While Wikipedia has a number of policies, and even more guidelines (policies are expected to be followed, guidelines are optional), with nearly five million articles, it's inevitable that some articles will exist which are not up to standards. This does not mean, however, that just because some articles that shouldn't be here have "flown under the radar," therefore other articles that shouldn't be here should get to break the rules too. (In many cases the articles with problems can be improved upon until they do meet Wikipedia's standards, rather than simply deleted. But some are unsalvageable.)
You can absolutely put the sources you've found together in your user sandbox or another sub-page of your user page. That way they will be easily accessible no matter what the outcome of the deletion discussion is. And don't worry about bugging me, PH Solution; if I'm busy, that just means it will take longer for me to respond, not that I won't. —GrammarFascist contribstalk 00:33, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Now I know how to indent. A quick procedure question- I notice that the article on ZAP that we both commented on has been relisted. I read about what that means, which I understand is to essentially initiate a bit of straw poll. Is it appropriate for me (and I guess you, too) to add a comment under the relist indication with a Keep (or something else), or will my comment further up be considered in the poll? And should I be specific with some of the references as examples? As I'm delving further into this topic I keep finding interesting articles. PH Solution (talk) 18:05, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have not participated in many deletion discussions yet, PH Solution, but I believe the comments above the relisting are also counted without needing to be repeated. However, if you have something to add, such as an additional source or argument, you should feel free to add your additional comment by beginning with *'''Comment.''' at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zinfandel Advocates and Producers.
PS Don;t forget to sign your talk page — and AfD page — comments with four tildes! —GrammarFascist contribstalk 17:59, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion about Sheila Cameron (artist)

Hello, GrammarFascist,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Sheila Cameron (artist) should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sheila Cameron (artist) .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,  ' Olowe2011 Talk 04:38, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Olowe2011, and thank you for that very kind and gentle notification that you have nominated the article for deletion. I confess I'm a bit confused by the nomination, however. Is there a notability standard other than having received substantial coverage in multiple independent, reliable sources (which Ms. Cameron has, as supported by the citations in the article) that I should be aware of? —GrammarFascist contribstalk 05:00, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Notability being why does this person matter and why does this page about her need to be on Wikipedia. Notability isn't about providing proof that the person exists or their work exists (even if those who show this fact are independent sources.) It is about proving the fact they are noteworthy. For example I consider myself an artist and I could easily pay £150 to get some artwork tossed into my local art gallery. This information could then be featured on some sites and bam I suddenly become eligible for a Wikipedia article - this is something I do not agree with.  ' Olowe2011 Talk 05:05, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Sheila Cameron (artist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
