Are two links to about the same story really needed, esp. as DeadBrain is not a large news source? ~ Mlk 06:58, 7 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Agreed. I shall remove these news links and provide just one, to an Australian media outlet. - Mark 10:18, 7 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I was wondering if I should add something to the page about the controversies surrounding his reptile handling that arrise among those who actually know what they're doing. Should this be on this page or the one for the show? Mokele 8:10, 28th of sept 2004

WikiFirst?

On a news report I heard something about his wife possibly not yet knowing of his death, with her apparently being in a remote part of Tasmania. If so, would this be the first case of someone's death popping up on Wiki before the person's spouse recieved the news? Morbid on this sad occasion I know, but the question is of interest.

Steve Irwin DEAD

Stephen Robert Irwin known as Crocodile Hunter dead. Irwin, 44, was killed while filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas. At age of 44 was killed by a stingray barb through the chest on Monday while diving off Australia's northeast coast, emergency officials and witnesses said. Irwin had been diving off his boat "Croc One" near Batt Reef northeast of Port Douglas. A helicopter had taken paramedics to nearby Low Isles where Irwin was taken for medical treatment but he was dead before they arrived, police said.

"Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest," said local diving operator Steve Edmondson, whose Poseidon boats were out on the Great Barrier Reef when the accident occurred.

The ADMINISTRATORS of Wikipedia should NOT vandalise the work of others!

I feel like watching South Park now; watch me put my thumb up this porcupine's anus -Northridge06:16, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

In bad taste, I should just like to add that I have already submitted this to darwinawards.com. Part of me is amazed that it took this long he was felled by one of the least agressive poisonous creatures on earth. --Duke Leto 06:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FedEx advertisement

I was going to add this to the article but the vandalism lock prevents me from doing so. Any chance someone could add it in when the article is unlocked? --M.Neko 05:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Steve Irwin appeared in a disturbingly ironic commercial for FedEx, where he was struck by a venomous snake. He waited in vain for an antitoxin sent by a rival delivery service, only to expire well before the antidote actually arrived.
If you wrote about the various commercials Irwin stared in, fine, but I don't see the point of drawing parallels between a commercial and the way he died – beyond it being a 'fun fact'. I'm sure you didn't mean anything negative with that statement, but I think it comes of as bad taste.--Anss123 05:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Steve Irwin's Great Escapes

What happened to the show "Steve Irwin's Great Escapes" on the travel channel? Imdb, wikipedia even travel channel has no mention of this show. Only place I can really find it is tvguide.com Any ideas?

Jungle Girl

Just in case anyone is wondering, Jungle Girl will be the name of Bindi Irwin's series. I just auditioned for a part in it today. Shooting for the pilot will start in early October, and it should be released in America by Late November. And yes, I was auditioning for a part as one of the singers. Scalene 07:57, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have they done any publicity on the show yet? I couldn't find it on IMDB or on a general Google search. —C.Fred (talk) 13:22, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not yet - but, I can confirm that the show is definitly going to be called Jungle Girl. It said so on the script - and they only just had auditions, so publicity is a long way off... Scalene 07:08, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Qualifications

Does anyone know if Steve actually has any qualifications (or even honourary ones?). Its always puzzled me and my biologist pals.--ZayZayEM 12:22, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

None, officially. He mucks around with stuff and hasn't gotten killed yet is all. In fact, he mucks around in a way dangerous both to him (like I care) and the animals themselves. No venomous handler in their right mind would do any of the crap he does, and he refuses to tranq the crocs once their on land, a ridiculous showmanship stunt that puts their lives in danger. --Mokele
AFAIK, He doesn't have any academic qualifications. On the other hand, he has a great deal of hands-on experience (especially as compared with some academicians.) - 27 december 2005

Antarctic "controversy" needs an update

Steve Irwin was cleared of charges relating to his Antarctic adventure, so the page needs an update. Sorry, I'm a new user and I don't have the confidence to do it just yet.

Heres a link to a related BBC News story on the cleared charges: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3896685.stm

Good Reference. I'll put it in for you, but you should try it yourself sometime. It's easy. Johnwhunt 16:55, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The external link to terry irwins website, links to the website of a person called daniellegaha.

Is this correct?

I looked at the sites and doesn't seem to be relevant in any way so I deleted them. -Acinyx

I thought he was dead. Must have been a rumor.

Fan forums

Does anybody here visit either of the fan forums that keep showing up in the links? One of them is actually a Terri Irwin site; I don't think it should be up at all. Is there any redeeming quality in the others, or should they be deleted as well? —C.Fred 04:25, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia

Russell Coight is a parody of a number of well known Australian documentary shows. I don't think the comment that it is an "obvious parody of the Crocodile Hunter" is correct. It is much closer to shows such as the Leyland Brothers than Crocodile Hunter, though it parodies the genre as a whole not any one specific show as described in its own wikipedia article.Rikware 04:14, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've always thought Coight based more on Malcom Douglas than Irwin. But "poeple doing silly things in Australia" is a genra that predates television!. Robbak 05:20, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RIP Steve Irwin. Such a shocking loss. -- Sarz 05:10, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Um, I'm skeptical. Stingrays don't have 'barbs' and certainly not ones long enough to pierce one's heart, nor strong enough to get through one's ribcage. If I'm not mistaken, stingrays sting via stinging cells in the tail, like a jellyfish. What? Oh, whoops, I was wrong. It's a cartilaginous spine covered in venom. Either way, that couldn't pierce your chest, and both this article and the stingray article appear to -be- vandalized, despite being protected against vandalism at present. Yeah, this has got to be a hoax.
Stingrays can be lethal, obviously. And if we've fallen for this "hoax", then so have CNN. You can't expect us to have all of the correct details exactly as the situation develops, but I personally do think a stingray barb could pierce someone's chest deep enough to cause death. And don't forget that it's venomous ... Cyde Weys 05:17, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No, nothing impossible about this. Stingray barbs are quite long, and certainly capable of killing. Steve himself would have said that as a piece-to-camera before - possible within hours of this tragedy, too.
A child was killed here (Innisfail) some ~20 years ago, when a stingray jumped into the boat. Definately occours, although it is unusual.Robbak 05:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
An interesting article on Stingray "attacks" here[1]220.237.34.36 05:28, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Article should link to wikipedia article on stingrays. I have seen very big rays at Kelly Tarltons (Auckland, nz) & they are certainly big enough to kill; thing that saves many people is that the barbs don't often hit close to the heart.

Big hoax if CNN and ABC both are on it...Xcfrommars 05:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep and the AP in the United States. --Woohookitty(meow) 05:18, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
False reports have happened before. It happened with al-Zarqawi several times, I believe. Notice how CNN is still saying "Reports: 'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin dead" and "Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media." Ambulance officers never confirmed it was Irwin, and even CNN is being cautious. I wouldn't rule out a false report just yet. --Rory096 05:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
CNN's story now says that Queensland police have confirmed that it is Irwin and that his family has been notified. —C.Fred (talk) 05:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I hear that Yahoo News has a video about this already, apparently with some footage from the Australian news channel that documented it. Can somebody verify this?

Google news has quite a few links. So its not likely to be a hoax. Ansell 05:21, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I realise this, but the fact that they provide lists of related articles was the point that I was getting at. Ansell 05:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I know we're supposed to discuss the article and not the subject, but I'd just like to add that I had tremendous respect for what this man did. Most people think of him as the goofy guy in the outback, but much of that was to generate money for his real passion, protecting animals, and he did great work. He will be missed. —Aiden 05:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. Pacific Coast Highway {blahRIP Crocodile HunterWP:NYCS} 05:41, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just got home after hearing it on the radio thinking it can't be true. Got on Wikipedia and here it is in black and white. Deceased September 4, 2006. RIP Steve. I send my condolences to his wife Terri, their kids and family. Rest in peace. Lakeyboy 05:28, 4 September 2006 (UTC). P.S, I reckon this is the most visited page on Wikipedia at the moment.[reply]

Aussie radio seems to have been wavering between confirmed dead and reported dead, but seems to have settled on dead, saying they have confirmation from Queensland Police. Right now I only think there’s a 90% chance he’s dead, but I’m an optimist. If he is dead, we have lost one of the greatest Aussies ever.149.167.175.99 05:30, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know this page should be for talking about the article itself, but I just wanted to pay my respects to an amazing man. He did so much, and for years was the face of everything Aussie to the North American youth. I offer my condolences to his family, and may he rest in peace. I spotted a bit of vandalism, and didn't see an appropriate section, so am making a new headline. Post any other spotted vandalism here if you spot it and can't change it. I'd edit it out, but I'm on a Hughesnet/Direcway satellite connection, and it's rare that I can maintain a logged in session when navigating to wiki pages =(

Queensland PS release and rumors

The Queensland Police Service media release document (JPEG format), linked to on the page, which apparently confirms Mr. Irwin's time of death seems to be a rather blatant screenshot of a rough Microsoft Word document, underlines for misspellings and all. It also includes some gaffes in writing, including missing words or bad phrasing. All in all, it seems like a faked serious-information style and doesn't seem to be reliable enough as a Wikipedia source.

At the same time, I've heard differing accounts including that Irwin did in fact die a week ago and that the news was just released to the general public at this time. However, I have no confirmation for this, and none of the news accounts I've seen support it, so it's easy enough to consign to the rumor bin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vintagejonny (talkcontribs) 06:20, 4 September 2006.
