(Monty Python)

What about Gumbies from Monty Python??

Picture is mislabeled

The picture of "early bendable" gumby and pokey is incorrect. These are not "early" models, nor are these particular ones in the picture the bendable ones. These are the small non-bendable rubber cast miniatures produced in the 80's and 90's that never had wires so they could bend. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.187.251.221 (talk) 01:20, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A Gumby person?

So what does it mean when they say someone is Gumby? Funny? Cool? Helpful? or what?
— Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.205.154.132 (talk) 00:01, 12 December 2005

It means they look rather silly, usually in a joking-deriding way.--Dayn 09:45, 11 June 2006 (UTC)The timestamp is accurate & the contributor was User:Dayn.
It's also a nickname for someone who is very "flexible" in any sense of the word -- either double-jointed (someone with very limber joints), or very adaptable in different situations. GUllman 23:15, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • A gumby is a certain type of Metal/Rock fan who usually has a long beard, loads of patches on a denim jacket and like Motorhead and Saxon etc. I think we need a disambiguation page 86.137.208.224 (talk) 16:01, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • No Dab needed nor permissible; see my more general discussion below (but less indented, since it is directed at the initial comment in this section). (As i write it is immediately below, but it's not guaranteed against being pushed down the page.)

  • Some editors would prefer to have sections like this removed from talk pages: as is made clear in a box near the top of this page,
This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject.
IMO it does need to be made clear that "gumby", in the family of senses discussed in this section, is on-topic on this page only for the purpose of clarifying the fact that it is off-topic for the accompanying article. An article on the noun (adjective?) would be lexicographic rather than encyclopedic, about the word and not about what the word represents. (There are a few words whose status is so involved -- Nigger and Fuck come to mind -- that the word is worthy of an encyclopedia article, but "gumby" is not one of them.) The Dab page will not be permitted to have an entry for the adjective, bcz on one hand the usage of "gumby" is not encyclopedically notable, and on the other the property of Gumbyishness (Gumbiness?) is ill-defined, and its various senses would, to the extent that those respective senses are encyclopedic, be better captured by various concepts like flexibility (anatomy), adaptability, punk fashion or gothic fashion, and maybe outgroup (sociology). Disambiguating among those senses is a good job for Wiktionary; even if there are users who need first the dab'n, and then an article on the details of punk fashion or anatomical flexibility (let alone one on each), they are so few that the choice of whether WP will do both was made long ago, when we settled on being WP, and NOT "Everything for Everybody".
Despite that, my view is that tolerating such talk-page discussions has benefits at tolerable cost: Newcomers get acquainted with our style of discussion, and see what kinds of discussion get reflected in the accompanying article; the time wasted by editors reading discussion that cannot lead to article content is not a big deal, in light of the inefficiency of both many eyeballs and our numerous, voluminous on-topic discussions.

Gumby did not have a girl friend, But he did have a uncle and male cousin both voiced by Australian actor Peter Greenwood.

Gumby is still the best glop of green clay EVER!!! He should still be on the air. But there might be no more Gumby now :( But gumby will always be in my heart.

Cartoon Network?

I don't believe that even existed in 1995, Gumby was on Nickelodeon.

I recall watching The Gumby Show in syndication on cable when I was a kid in the 90s. It was either Nickelodeon (which I'm leaning towards) or Cartoon Network. If anyone can confirm which network it was aired on in the 90s it would be a great help to the article. yonnie (talk) 03:19, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Gumbo RGB.JPG

Image:Gumbo RGB.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. • There is indeed a Gumby parody in JtHM. On pg. 12 of the trade there is a "Scumby" poster. This is the short that ends with "Dear Die-ary: Today I had some friends over." 23:40, 8 July 2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zombieco (talkcontribs)

Public Domain?

Just curious, are any Gumby episodes in the Public Domain? I'm doing an MSTesque thing for friends and I need a short for my first episode, however I can't find any that are actually bad, and any that are have been featured on MST or on RiffTrax, and I want to avoid using them. ... & gumbo

NPR coverage of the creator's death mentions that Gumby was named after gumbo soil/gumbo (soil), a clay-like substance sometimes described as gumbo clay and sometimes compared to adobe clay. There are mentions in WP & elsewhere on Web & in dictionaries.

Only very brief of Eddie Murphy's version of Gumby in the article?

I'm surprised there's no mention of Eddie Murphy's version of the Gumby character from when he was a performer on Saturday Night Live. I do understand he wasn't perhaps "officially" performing as Gumby, but he did put on a costume that looked like the actual Gumby character. One could debate that part of the actual Gumby character's new popularity in the 80's was due to his, for lack of a better term, interpitation of the actual Gumby claymation character. Any thoughts on why Eddie Murphy's version isn't included? 69.76.14.139 (talk) 15:58, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, to edit myself I did find VERY brief mention of the costume used by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live. Still, I'd think the article should have a bit more mention of his version of the Gumby character. I am in my early 40's, I honestly wasn't aware of the Gumby character as a child until I saw him do a skit on Saturday Night Live in the early 80's. I then asked my parents what character he was imitating, and found out about the original claymation version of the Gumby character that way. I'd suspect for many, their first exposure to Gumby was through his version of the character, and then from that seeking out or at least asking about the actual claymation shows. 69.76.14.139 (talk) 16:04, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Some say that the mascot of Expo 2010(Haibao( resembles Gumby[1]

"

In short, no. It has little, if anything, to do with Gumby. It may very well be true, but it's not notable. Apart from using weasel words to describe just who it is that sees this similarity, it's not a notable event with regard to the character. Doubtless other characters have had similarities, and those wouldn't be notable either. If the rights holders became involved in some way, I'd say it would be fair game. It's far more appropriate on the Expo 2010 page, but not here. Majorclanger (talk) 04:55, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dick Beals not the original voice of Gumby

With the death of Dick Beals, the news media has been repeating that he was the original voice of Gumby. He was not. The original voice was a woman named Ruth Eggleston. Beals provided voices in some episodes of the show, but if he ever voiced Gumby, it was not on a regular basis, and it was not until later in the run.

From the official Gumby website http://www.gumbyworld.com/gumby-characters/gumby/gumbys-name-personality-voice/

"Art Clokey has made a number of timeless archetypes that represent something special for America. What those characters sound like is a large part of their personas. We asked Art about the people whose voices are part of the characters. Who did the first voice of Gumby, and who did the voice after that?

“Well, the first voice of Gumby was a woman. She was the wife of our art director and first artist, Al Eggleston. Her name was Ruth Eggleston. Art and Ruth Clokey brought on Al and Ruth Eggleston as their fist collaborators. Art and Al came up with sets, while Ruth Eggleston, Art and Al provided the voices for most of the characters in the 1956 episodes.

During the 1957 episodes, Dallas McKennon voiced Gumby, and Art continued to do Pokey, Gumbo and various other voices. Dal was an experienced actor who did major voice work for many Disney classics such as Bed Knobs and Broomsticks and Mary Poppins. He later was the voice of Archie and Buz Buzzard, and he starred in The Daniel Boone Show as Cincinatus.

In the early 60’s, Ginny Tyler of Mickey Mouse Club fame did the Gumby voice for a few episodes, while Dal was the voice of Gumby for most of the episodes in the early 60’s. Dick Beals (who was also the voice of the 1960’s Davey) subbed as Gumby’s voice for a few episodes in the mid 60’s. Norma McMillan (the late 60’s/early 70’s Davey) was the voice of Gumby in the late 60’s. She was also the voice of Casper the Friendly Ghost. Dal came back to do the voice of Gumby in the 80’s series and the 90’s movie."

Perhaps the confusion comes from the fact that Norma MacMillan replaced Dick Beals as Davey, and her Gumby voice resembled her Davey voice. Those who did not know that Davey had more than one VA may have mistakenly assumed that it was Beals voicing Gumby in the instances where it was MacMillan.

Either way, Art has said on multiple occasions that Ruth Eggleston was Gumby's original voice, and having seen the early shorts, I can say that it is definitely not Dick Beals in those.--TServo2050 (talk) 22:01, 3 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
