Battlefield 2142 (abbreviated BF2142) is a first-person shooter using a modified engine of Battlefield 2 set in the 22nd century, during a new ice age. Battlefield 2142 is currently under development by Digital Illusions CE, and to be published by Electronic Arts. The game went gold on September 22nd 2006. The release date is October 17 2006.[1] A FilePlanet-exclusive beta was released in the third week of August 2006, and the beta ended on September 12, 2006.

Story

By early 2138, the world's six factions were heavily fortified, ready to battle over the world's remaining land and resources. Expecting an invasion by the Pan Asian Coalition (PAC) into the agriculture-rich plains of Northern Africa, the European Union concentrated its resources along the Mediterranean, ready to assist the Union of African States. A foray by two PAC battalions into Egypt seemed to confirm their suspicions, but the attacks were merely decoys, meant to distract the world from the PAC's primary objective, to destroy the military might of the EU's premiere units still located in Europe.

Following the defeat of the EU army in Europe, the stage was set for the PAC military to force its way into the EU-occupied African mainland. In February 2142, the EU formed 'The Mediterranean Wall', a line of defenses along the North African coast from Morocco to Egypt. Meanwhile, the PAC was drawing up a series of deception plans under the codenames Kupalo, Dazhbog and Perun. These exercises were designed to preoccupy and divide the EU forces in preparation for the PACs primary mission, Operation Motherland, a comprehensive, multi-pronged assault on the African continent.

Gameplay

Gameplay in Battlefield 2142 includes the classic conquest mode of play with up to 64 players, but it will additionally introduce a new 48-player game mode called "Titan" mode. The game involves players from opposite teams trying to destroy the other team's MK-1 Titan(refactored from [[[4]|MK-1 Titan]]), while trying to defend their own. Titans can be boarded by infantry via pods launched from vehicles, after the Titan's shields have been worn down. The Titan's shields can be worn down by capturing a missile silo and firing a Bloc-2 ATM missile at the opposite team's Titan, or with small arms and vehicles.(refactored from [[[5]|Bloc-2]]) The goal is for the opposing team to board the Titan, advance through its corridors, and destroy the security checkpoints, which will release the blast doors to the Titan's reactor. They must then destroy the reactor with explosives, which will trigger a 20-second abandon ship timer, allowing players to jump off the Titan before it finally blows.

Battlefield 2142 will additionally see the return of the ranking/points system seen in Battlefield 2.

As an addition, in the August 2006 Newsletter, DICE announced that once participated in the Veterans Program, players will have a chance to reserve their name for Battlefield 2142, an immediate in-game rank-up, and exclusive verbal taunts against other players. (refactored from [[[5]|rank-up]])

Infantry classes

Battlefield 2142 has four classes per team, down from both Battlefield 2's seven and Battlefield 1942's five. The classes can easily be described as a combination of two of Battlefield 2's classes:

  1. Recon: A combination of Special-Ops and Sniper
  2. Engineer: Anti-Tank and Combat Engineer, can repair assets/vehicles
  3. Assault: Assault and Medic
  4. Support: Traditional support role and can deploy auto defense turrets

EA has confirmed that customization of weapons in classes will be present, boasting "more than 1500 combos"(refactored from [[[6]|customize]]).

Weapons and equipment

Battlefield 2142 uses a number of different real-world weapons, however, most are 'futuristic' and their technical aspects differ greatly to their present-day counterparts

Vehicles

Battlefield 2142 has a wide range of different futuristic vehicles (such as Mechs).

Maps

Battlefield 2142 is currently set to be shipped with 15 maps in total, which 5 of them are Titan maps. All maps are split into two regional settings, with seven maps within a European Theater and eight maps within an African Theater. Many of the maps are 'repeated', and have a customized level specifically for the Titan Mode of gameplay, reducing the number of purely 'unique' maps to 10 (five for each faction).

Beta release

The Battlefield 2142 beta was released in the third week of August, after generating immense hype. However, it was revealed that the beta was not a complete "open" beta upon release its release, and this disappointed many fans. At first, it was believed to be a Fileplanet subscriber-only beta, [2] but was later revealed to also have an invite system. So far the beta is only available to certain Fileplanet subscribers (keys are given out on a first-come, first-serve basis) and those who were invited. Some fansites have been holding contests giving out invitations to the BF2142 beta as prizes. On August 31, a large number of keys were given out by Fileplanet for free, and the beta client was upgraded. However, as of September 2, the beta was closed as all the keys had been given out.

On September 12, 2006 the beta ended.

Rumors

Battlefield 2142 had been rumored to be in development, ever since a February 2006 interview with Dan Blackstone of DICE, the senior producer of the project, in which he mentions:

We’re about to announce something very big, so stay tuned. One other interviewer asked this and I gave him a hint, so it’s only fair that I do the same for you: 3213/3X2. Or said another way: S.R. 4588164.(refactored from [[[2]|Blackstone]])

The S.R. (Square Root) of 4588164 is 2142 (3213÷3×2 equals 2142 as well), hence the rumors. The only proof of existence was the cover story of the PC Gamer magazine and the trailer, published on the very same magazine, until March 21, 2006, when EA/DICE announced that, the next game in the Battlefield series would be Battlefield 2142, in their March 21, 2006 Community Update. [1] To further show proof of the game's existence, at Multiplay i27, a LAN party which EA sponsors regularly, Battlefield 2142 merchandise was given out, along with further details on a release date.

BF2142 was officially announced and was playable at E3. Several trailers and previews are available on major gaming websites from this event.

It has been rumoured (some gaming websites, including TeamXbox) that a port of Battlefield 2142 will appear on the Xbox 360(or other consoles). Though, EA, and DICE have said they do not plans for a console port currently.

Criticism

It has recently been announced that the game will ship with "Dynamic Advertising," which means (most likely) changing adverts on objects such as billboards in-game. This system is featured in games such as Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and SWAT 4. This has upset some fans.[3]

Battlefield 2142 will not support wider field of view for widescreen resolutions.[4] The lack of this feature in Battlefield 2 has caused criticism from widescreen users.[5] Widening the field of view allows the players to see more around them, which some consider an unfair advantage in a first-person shooter.

Notes

Template:Ent*According to the Official EA website: In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. [2] Template:Ent*We’re about to announce something very big, so stay tuned. One other interviewer asked this and I gave him a hint, so it’s only fair that I do the same for you: 3213/3X2. Or said another way S.R. 4588164. [3] Template:Ent*We got to see a montage of various vehicles, with their names, including the L-5 Riesig, the MK-1 Titan, the Type 21 Nekomata, the T-39 Bogatyr walking tank, and the UD-6 Talon gunship. [4] Template:Ent*You can try to whittle the shields down using regular weapons and vehicles, but that will take a long time. The easiest way is to seize missile silos, which are sort of like the flag-capture points in other Battlefield games. Seize a silo, and a timer counts down to the time it will launch a Bloc-2 ATM missile at the enemy Titan, inflicting damage on its shields. [5] Template:Ent*Players who have logged time with BF2 will be able to log onto the Battlefield website and reserve their Battlefield 2 name for Battlefield 2142 before lamers can squat on it.[6] Template:Ent*We introduce the ability to build your own soldiers, more than 1500 combos to equip your soldier.
